There’s no need to be afraid!!! God, your faithful loving shepherd, is always with you; He will protect you and guide you through every trial. A shepherd provides loads of care for his sheep. He or she is a guide, herding the sheep to find the best pastures for grazing. He watches carefully to be sure not a single sheep gets lost. He gathers the sheep together at nightfall for their protection. He tenderly removes any burrs or sticks from the sheep’s wool and cares for any injuries the sheep might have. David, who wrote Psalm 23 which begins and ends the Bible lesson this week, was a shepherd, himself. From his own experience, he knew how courageous a shepherd could be in defending his sheep. David had to defend his own sheep from both the attack of a bear and a lion. In both cases, he fought valiantly to protect the sheep. He won both times and the sheep were kept safe. Even though David was just a young boy when he was tending the sheep and when he fought the giant Goliath, he had great courage, greater than all the soldiers in the army. The source of his courage was his deep conviction that God was his shepherd, always tenderly caring for him, protecting him, and guiding him even when his life was in great danger. Like David, you too, can feel the shepherding love of God and have great courage. Keep your tender relationship with your Father-Mother God at the front of your thought this week and let your true, undaunted, spiritual courage be revealed.

Golden Text: You’re always with your Shepherd and because of this you are always safe no matter where you are or what’s going on around you. There is a valley just outside of Jerusalem, named the Kidron Valley (in ancient times called the brook Kidron for the occasional water that would flow in the valley). Today, it is popularly called the Valley of the Shadow of Death. David knew about the brook Kidron. He crossed it when he left Jerusalem to escape from Absalom’s threat. It’s not clear, though, if “the valley” David referred to in the psalm was actually a specific place, but the geography of the Kidron Valley can give us a good idea of the kind of valley David might have had in mind when he wrote Psalm 23. This valley is very deep and narrow. Because of this the sunlight doesn’t shine in the valley. As a result the valley is always dark even in the daytime. No one likes to be there and without any sunshine the valley is not useful at all. If you find yourself feeling like you are walking through the deep, dark valley of fear, limitation, or danger, remember your loving shepherd, God, is watching over you and saying, “Oh, don’t be afraid, this is a dark place, but I’m right here with you and I know the way through the darkness.” Take a look at Hymn 81 for more inspiration.

Responsive Reading: Rejoice, the sad veil that has covered all people has been removed!!! These reassuring verses from Isaiah continue the comforting and beautiful theme of God as our shepherd. This group of verses is centered around Isaiah 25:7 and 8. The New International Reader’s Version translates these verses like this, “…the Lord will destroy the veil of sadness that covers all of the nations. He will destroy the gloom that is spread over everyone. He will swallow up death forever. The Lord and King will wipe away the tears from everyone’s face. He will remove the shame of his people from the whole earth.” The New Interpreter’s Bible explains that verse 7 and 8, “express the deepest human hopes for an end to mourning, to death itself, and to all grief.” It makes sense that God, who is Love, would not leave His beloved children lost and wandering aimlessly in the dark “valley of the shadow of death.” The six sections of the Bible Lesson that follow show how this sad veil has been removed and how the great hope of humanity has been fulfilled. Let’s check our thoughts to see if we are accepting the fulfillment of this hope or not. Do we agree with Life or do we fear death? If we fear death, let’s allow the example of David, Jesus, Paul and the tender loving guidance of our Shepherd to lead us to accept the joyful news – “Death is swallowed up in victory!” (1Cor 15:54)

Section 1: Why should we be afraid of death? Jesus has already proved that death and the devil have no power. God has communicated with us in the past by means of His prophets. But, most recently He has taught us what we needed to know through the life of Jesus. (B3) Christ Jesus has “marked” the way for us. (S4) He has shown us the way out of darkness – the fear of and the belief in death. “What we see is Jesus, after being made temporarily inferior to the angels and so subject to death, in order that he should, by God’s grace, taste death for every man, now crowned with glory and honor.” (J. B. Phillips) (B4) Jesus proved that death has no power, he won the victory over death for all of us. If we are obedient to Jesus’ commandments this shows we really understand Jesus and the victory he won for us. (B5) And why would we want to do anything other than follow Jesus’ commandments? It is truly wise to follow the directions of a wise man, especially one who has proved the nothingness of death and showed all mankind the way out of the darkness of fear. If we follow his guidance we are really making the most of what he, through his suffering, generously gave us, “eternal life.” (B5) Jesus always put his trust in Spirit rather than in matter. You can “enlarge [your] borders and strengthen [your] base” this week. (S2) Look for a new opportunity each day to prove the allness of Spirit and nothingness of matter. When you find one, go for it!

Section 2: When we overcome sin, we overcome death. If we agree with sin and follow sin’s directions, then we disagree with God and deny that God, Life, is the only power. We become promoters of many powers; good and bad, life and death, and many minds; honest and dishonest, pure and impure, unselfish and selfish. We’re not working for God anymore, we’re working against Him. (B6) A good way to defend ourselves against the temptations of sin is to ask ourselves, “If I’m going to follow these directions, where will they take me? Will they really take me to where I want to go?” When Jesus was tempted of the devil, the answers that he gave to the devil show that Jesus knew if he followed the devil’s directions, they would not take him to where he wanted to go. Take a look at each of his three answers. You’ll see that Jesus knew that the devil’s suggestions were leading away from God, not bringing him closer to God, which is where he wanted to go. (B8) Mary Baker Eddy tells us to “Be watchful, sober, and vigilant.” (S8)  Watch carefully to see where your thoughts and actions are taking you. Remember, your loving Shepherd is ever with you to point out the right path. Aware of His love, you will always have the courage you need to take the right path, the one that leads to Life.

Section 3: The healing of sickness destroys the fear of death. When John the Baptist asked Jesus to give his disciples evidence that Jesus had come from God, Jesus answered that the healings were the proof. (B10) When the carnal mind objects to the idea that there is no death and suggests anyone who would believe such a thing is either the devil or is deluded, we can take Jesus lead and show that each healing proves there is no death. (B11) Every Christian Science healing proves that there is no death because every Christian Science healing proves that all existence is the outcome of God, infinite Mind and that man is entirely spiritual. Every healing proves the nothingness of matter and the allness of Mind. Because God, Mind, is eternal and is the substance and life of man, life can’t be lost. Jesus responded to the suggestion the he healed by the power of the devil with a parables. The parable of the house divided against itself shows that evil cannot possibly combine with good and result in an all-good outcome. Jesus then guides his listeners to understand the basis of his healing works with the parable of the strong man. This parable explains that matter is not the source of physical difficulties. It is the carnal mind that is the problem and the healing is done by bringing this imaginary mind under the control of God, the only Mind. (B11, S13) You can “bind the strong man” and silence his arguments on the side of death and the devil. Find the rules for healing given in citation 14 in Science and Health and put them to good use this week. You’re sure to be a winner!!!

Section 4: Don’t go back to your old ways, GO FORWARD – “Cast your net on the right side.”  After Jesus was crucified, it looked as if the disciples would go back to their old way of living. While Jesus had been with them, they had proved themselves to be capable fishers of men. However, shortly after the crucifixion we find the disciples returning to the sea to fish. Could they have forgotten all the healings they had seen and accomplished and gone back to their old ways? When Jesus called to them from the shore it was a wake-up call – “cast your net on the right side” – the side of Spirit – the side you yourselves have already proved to be true. (B13, S19) Once you have witnessed the power of Spirit there really is no way and no good reason to go back to the material point of view. It may seem tempting to go back when you’re confronted with serious set backs. You might even confront suggestions like the devil’s false suggestions to Jesus – matter can give you what God has not yet given you and matter can give it to you right now, just do what I say and you’ll have it all. But is it really possible for matter, which has no real basis, source, or principle, to do the same or more for you than all-powerful Spirit? No. Matter-based promises are hollow, empty shells, pretty on the outside but having no real substance. Can matter raise the dead or even hold out hope that this is possible? No. Can we get rid of sin, which is the cause of war and all discord, through matter? No. There is no going back. So when temptations put you on probation, do what the disciples did, go forward. Be awake to your Master’s voice. Be conscious of the ever-present, unfailing, power of Spirit. Then with conviction, “cast your net on the right side” and don’t look back.

Section 5: Proof and progress build spiritual strength. Paul was convinced that our trials are also our blessings because they move us forward and make us strong. After he was stoned and then saved from death, Paul wrote, “We don’t want you in the dark, friends, about how hard it was when all this came down on us in Asia province. It was so bad we didn’t think we were going to make it. As it turned out, it was the best thing that could have happened. Instead of trusting in our own strength or wits to get out of it, we were forced to trust God totally – not a bad idea since he’s the God who raises the dead! And he did it, rescued us from certain doom.” (The Message) (B17)

Death is the illusion. What if Paul’s friends who stood around his stoned body had given up on him? They were looking right at the supposed evidence of death, but they must not have been fooled by the false evidence they were looking at. The great healing works they had seen Paul perform must have made them question the evidence of the material senses. What if the disciples had been so convinced of the finality of Jesus’ death that they couldn’t hear his voice calling to them from the shore? Those things that they had witnessed during Jesus’ life must have kept their mental doors open wide enough that they could hear his call and awake from the dream that he had died. Don’t let the material evidence of death impress you either. (S22) You have seen and have proved the facts of Spirit in your life, the illusive evidence of death cannot change that, no matter how final it might seem.

Section 6: You’ve got to see this! The dry desert is in full bloom, the barren valley is brimming with life, and the deep, dark “valley of the shadow of death” is flooded with the light of Life and Love. This beautiful imagery brings our attention to the stark contrast between the mortal fear of death and God’s perpetual promise of eternal life. God’s loving promise, “Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die,” is a loving call to wake up from the fearful dream of death and see the full glory of unstoppable Life that surrounds you. (B19) Again, we read of the loving imagery of God as our shepherd, whose love is everlasting, whose constant care extends even to those sheep who carelessly or ignorantly wander off from the flock. The Shepherd patiently promises to search for every single sheep until all have been rescued from the darkness where they have wandered, tenderly brought back to safety, and persistently nurtured by Love, until they each experience the fullness of Life. (B20) This Lesson closes with Psalm 23 with its spiritual interpretation from Science and Health. This is “a psalm about living, for it puts daily activities, such as eating, drinking, and seeking security in a radically God-centered perspective that challenges our usual way of thinking.” (New Interpreter’s Bible) Apply this God-centered approach to your activities this week and enjoy the sweet consciousness of ever-present Love. God’s promise of everlasting Life is for you. He will seek you out, to free you from the mental darkness that comes from the false belief in death. God and His Christ will not stop seeking you until this promise is completely fulfilled in your life.

Camp Director’s Note: This sharing is the latest in an ongoing, seven-year series of CedarS Bible Lesson “mets” (metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians. (To keep the flow of the practitioner’s ideas intact and to allow for more selective printing I put my “Possible Sunday School Topics” and Homework options on the following page – after the practitioner’s application ideas.) This weekly email (and website posting) is intended to encourage further study and application of ideas in the lesson and to invigorate Sunday School participation by students and by the budding teachers on our staff. Originally sent JUST to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study, application and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson “mets” are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way a substitute for daily study of the lesson. The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension, background and new angles on daily applicability to some of the ideas and passages being studied. The weekly Bible Lessons are copyrighted by the Christian Science Publishing Society and are printed in the Christian Science Quarterly as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms or online at eBibleLesson.com or myBibleLesson.com. The citations referenced (i.e. B1 and S28) from this week’s Bible Lesson in the “met” (metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the King James Version of the Bible (B1-24) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (S1-30) The Bible and Science and Health are the ordained pastor of the Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Bible Lesson is the sermon read in Christian Science church services throughout the world. The Lesson-Sermon speaks individually through the Christ to everyone, providing unique insights and tailor-made applications for each one. We are glad you requested this metaphysical sharing and hope that you find some of these ideas helpful in your daily spiritual journey, in your deeper digging in the books and in closer bonding with your Comforter and Pastor. Have fun unwrapping, cherishing and sharing your special, spiritual gift(s)!
Enjoy!

Possible Sunday School Topics, Homework & Application Ideas by Warren Huff for the 4/27/08 Christian Science Bible Lesson: “Probation after Death”

Possible Sunday School Topics [P.S.S.T. -Golden Text] With the lesson starting and ending with the 23rd Psalm, hear each verse of the Psalm from a shepherd viewpoint in The Song of our Syrian Guest by William Allen Knight. (It’s free, online at http://infomotions.com/etexts/gutenberg/dirs/1/2/6/1/12615/12615.htm) If you’re seeking the courage to face up to a scary situation, cherish God’s shepherding care for you and confidently obey his directions as sheep so trustingly do. “Sometimes, in spite of all the care of the shepherd and his dogs, a wolf will get into the very midst of the flock. The sheep are wild with fright. They run and leap and make it impossible to get at the foe in their midst, who at that very moment may be fastening his teeth in the throat of a helpless member of the flock. But the shepherd is with them. He knows what to do even at such a time. He leaps to a rock or hillock that he may be seen and heard. Then he lifts his voice in a long call, something like a wolf’s cry: ‘Ooh! ooh!’ On hearing this, the sheep remember the shepherd; they heed his voice; and, strange to tell, the poor, timid creatures, which were helpless with terror before, instantly rush with all their strength into a solid mass. The pressure is irresistible; the wolf is overcome; frequently he is crushed to death, while the shepherd stands there on a rock crying, ‘Ooh! ooh!’ ‘I will fear no evil: for art with me.'” The Song of our Syrian Guest by William Allen Knight (How important to be part of an obedient, church “flock!”)

Possible Uplifting Sunday School Homework (P.U.S.S.H.) If you ever feel like you’re being tested beyond your abilities, keep striving to live more and more unselfishly and to improve your moments and yourself. This is a message of this week’s lesson and also of a movie that most Sunday School teachers probably have seen, even if most of their students have not. In “Groundhog Day,” Bill Murray starts out as a very self-centered weather reporter who becomes snow-bound in Punxsutawney, PA on Groundhog Day. The day keeps repeating itself till he learns to do all he can to make a positive difference in the lives of everyone around him as well as in himself. Consider yourself “on probation,” willingly eager to: see the needs of others and proactively help them in every way you can; be kind to those who aren’t in the “in” crowd; foresee and forestall problems; willingly practice to improve your musical and artistic talents. “There is nothing difficult nor toilsome in this task, when the way is pointed out; but self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistence alone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life.” (S&H 463:15)

Possible Sunday School Topics (P.S.S.T. – Responsive Reading) – Sheep are great role models of the willing obedience featured in last week’s lesson and P.S.S.T.s. During camper recruiting season, I willingly and unquestioningly obey hundreds of verbal directions each week from a G.P.S. (Global Positioning System) devise that virtually says out loud: “This is the way,” (drive) “ye in it when ye turn to the right hand and when ye turn to the left hand.” (RR, Isa. 30:21) Remember that in Greek, sin is an archery term for “missing the mark.” A GPS keeps us from missing a turn, getting lost and wasting valuable time and gas money. What a good model a GPS is for correction-making when someone messes up. It doesn’t judge or call the wrong-turner a dummy, but kindly advises the mistake-maker to: “Make a U-turn when possible.” We each have a “God Positioning System” of angel messages from God constantly being communicated to us for our benefit. For a great youth lecture that develops this GPS theme, check out an audio podcast by Don Wallingford at http://www.tmcyouth.com/downloads/audio/don-chicago.mp3

(P.S.S.T. -1) (1st section) Jesus overcame two commonly accepted “certainties:” death and taxes. Last week I doubt that many U.S. citizens paid their taxes (and a friend’s) like Jesus did: with money that was found in the mouth of “the fish that first cometh up”. (Matt. 17:27) However, many of us do gratefully count on finding – in other unexpected places – the divine provisions needed at the moment. We should feel “sheepishly” cared-for (with no wants, Golden Text & S28), because Jesus showed us infinite examples of Love’s advance provisions that perfectly meet all our needs.

Jesus also provided infallible proofs that “there is no death-process.” (S3, S&H 289: 20) “He …brake (our) bands in sunder” (B2, Ps. 107:14) And yet, most people have failed to give up their belief in death (“carnal-mindedness”) and so continue to drag around its chains, standing in opposition to their own progress. How are you, or those you know, like this Florida driver? Although he had a nearly-new car, a senior citizen complained to our friend that his brakes were squeaking and that he was getting way less gas mileage than was advertised. Our friend offered to help negotiate adjustments with the dealership. They quickly discovered that the brakes were totally worn out and that the mileage was awful, because the man was driving with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas! (“So I can stop at a moment’s notice!”) Being worried (“ungrateful in advance”) is like driving with one foot always on the brake. May our “prayer … possess… no opposing element.” (My. 293:21) “When man gives up his belief in death, he will advance more rapidly towards God, Life, and Love.” (S2, S&H 430:7)

(P.S.S.T. -2) It’s no big deal that temptations come to us. After all, temptations came to Jesus too. (B8, B9) What is important is what we do with them. Jesus was ready to challenge each false claim as soon as it was presented. Notice that “this original man, Jesus” (S&H 286:13) didn’t try to get creative in his method or wording. (B8, Matt. 4:1-11) Instead, he just quoted back passages that he had memorized from Deuteronomy, the law book. How are you doing at memorizing favorite citations so you can apply them (like Jesus did) in moments of need when your books aren’t available? (See P.S.S.T. 6 for 3-3-08) Keep adding to your favorite citation collection and share with your class or congregation how this has helped your week.

A sucker may be a sweet and helpful symbol (and pun) to share with your SS students. God succor (help) (B9, Hebrews 2:18) is much sweeter and more satisfying than the “all-day” suckers that we used to enjoy as kids. Rather than being a “sucker” (“missing the mark” and disobeying your angel guidance system), stop falling for the false promises that temptations can be anything but detours taking you away from where you really want to go. (See P.S.S.T.-RR) Respond to temptation as decisively and quickly as Jesus did. (B8, Matt. 4:1-11) “God comes with succor speedy!” (CS Hymn 75:1)

(P.S.S.T. -3) Check out the fun MyBibleLesson.com (M.B.L.) cartoons that illustrate Jesus’ parable of binding the strong man (mortal mind) in order to heal the body. In her Science and Health chapter on “Christian Science Practice,” Mrs. Eddy gives wonderful guidance on treating the mind/body as an innocent defendant in a court trial. (“Never plead guilty!” S14, S&H 391:18 as well as the trial allegory to close the chapter, S&H 430-442)

You may also want to join me in giving thought to the M.B.L. poster about the “Guide to Great Housekeeping.” The biographies on Mrs. Eddy speak of what an orderly person she was and how that was a basis for her uncluttered and orderly treatments that healed. How does that apply to my desk? or to my room? or to our kitchen sink? Can I live in the now enough to put things where they belong as I go, rather than postponing those steps till they pile up? This is the way to control mental housekeeping and take proper care of the body as well.

(P.S.S.T. -4) Two thousand years ago, Jesus had much “higher-tech” “tools” and more environmentally-sensitive abilities than we do today. In 2008 there is still nothing on the market to match Christ’s: fish finder (for locating & corralling the disciples’ big catch, B13, John 21); his special GPS system (for directing the collection of prophesied components as in Matt. 21:1-7); his special metal detector (for locating tax money, see PSST-1); his special cloaking devise (for achieving invisibility in a hostile crowd as in Luke 4:29-30); his special fuel-efficient, speed-of-thought, boat (for transporting disciples instantly without a drop of fuel as in John 6:21); his special food-production “tools” (for multiplying limited resources to feed hunger humanity as in Matt. 14:14-21); his special anti-gravity, wave-walking ability (for walking over the waves as in Matt. 14:25); his weather-controlling, storm-stilling “tools” (for calming winds and stopping storms as in Luke 8:23-25); his special, but repeatable, power to rescue all who have missed the mark or made wrong turns, to heal every disease and even raise the dead (as recorded throughout the Gospels and promised for us to do too in John 14:12). What makes Jesus’ spiritual perception and abilities (and ours) far superior to anything that’s just technologically advanced? Never miss Sunday School where you can explore how to bring Christian healing and heavenly supplies to our world that is so longing for them.

(P.S.S.T. -5) Have you ever had a hard experience like Paul did that blessed you by launching you forward and making you stronger? Of his near-death experience Paul wrote, “it was the best thing that could have happened. Instead of trusting in our own strength or wits to get out of it, we were forced to trust God totally – not a bad idea since he’s the God who raises the dead!” (The Message, B17)

Paul’s friends who gathered around his body after it was stoned and left for dead weren’t impressed by the material evidence of death and so could awaken from the belief that he had died. Don’t you be impressed either by any material illusion of death. (S22) Resurrection and character transformation are to be expected and demonstrated. (as with Jane in P.S.S.T. -5, April 13, 2008 and with Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day,” PUSSH today)

(P.S.S.T. -6) Christian Science and CedarS, “contradicting sense,” (S26) are both founded on “a radically God-centered perspective that challenges our usual way of thinking.” (New Interpreter’s Bible Ps. 23) CedarS Founder, Mrs. Ruth Huff (my dear mom) opened the Bible at random to (B21, Isa. 35) as God’s purpose for CedarS and its alternative name – “the way of holiness.” (Isa. 35:8) In this way of holiness, the right way we are all yielding to, “the dry desert is in full bloom, the barren valley is brimming with life, and the deep, dark “valley of the shadow of death” is flooded with the light of Life and Love. … Apply this God-centered approach [this way of wholeness and holiness] to your activities this week and enjoy the sweet consciousness of ever-present Love. … God and His Christ will not stop seeking you until this promise is completely fulfilled in your life.” (Janet Hegarty’s Section 6 application ideas)
