Greetings from the Kingdom of Heaven!

I am so grateful for your earnest desire to dig deeper into this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson & how wonderful that there are so many great resources to do so!

Hope you’ll enjoy all those that I’ve mentioned in this week’s CedarS Met in addition to taking a look at the “In The Bible Lesson” article included in the Christian Science Sentinel and other bible study resources available through websites put out by The Mother Church and TMCYouth such as JSHOnline, ChristianScience.com and Time4Thinkers.com.

And, how wonderful that last week’s Lesson contrasting the material and spiritual was the perfect springboard to better understanding reality J

Through both my involvement at Principia College – a small liberal arts school for Christian Scientists located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in Elsah, IL – and several of camps for Christian Scientists in the United States, Australia and England, I have often heard the saying, “Now back to the real world” as either the semester or session is coming to a close.

Why?

Experiencing so much spiritual growth, joy, peace, progress, divine adventure, care, unfoldment, healing and love, while being in an uplifting atmosphere where one is not being constantly bombarded by many of the temptations and worries that the rest of the world seems to face is such a great gift that it can feel almost like a dream.

Nevertheless, a question that was posed at the very beginning of a talk at Principia College in which the speaker shared some thoughts about how students might pray about the transition to the “real world” has really shifted my thinking about these experiences:

What do you consider reality?

Arresting isn’t it?!? What do you consider reality? Is it sin, sickness, disease, death, fear, doubt, frustration, blame, addiction, guilt, sadness, dishonesty, violence, deceit, famine, judgment, war, poverty, pain, discord, weakness, imperfection and sensuality?

OR do we hold innocence, health, wholeness, life, freedom, confidence, encouragement, forgiveness, dominion, humility, joy, honesty, peace, integrity, fullness, acceptance, peace, abundance, ease, strength, harmony, perfection and purity – the kingdom of heaven – as what is real and true?

Golden Text
“…behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21 behold)

I invite you to join me to humbly accept this idea as true for yourself each day this week and really make it your own.  How often do we seem to believe that the kingdom of God – heaven, harmony, wholeness, happiness, holiness and healing – is somewhere out there, be it in a place, house, relationship, item of clothing, event, group of friends, car, social organization, food or vacation?  While these are all wonderful expressions of the kingdom of heaven, sometimes we need a little reminder to realign our thoughts to what’s real and true.  “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)  Let’s focus on the kingdom of God – instead of the “and things” – this and get ready to be blessed!

Responsive Reading (RR)
I am finding the following two definitions from the Glossary of Science & Health helpful in thinking about the very first citation in this week’s Responsive Reading:

  • HEAVEN. Harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul.
  • EARTH. A sphere; a type of eternity and immortality, which are likewise without beginning or end. To material sense, earth is matter; to spiritual sense, it is a compound idea.

How wonderful that there is no weakness, feebleness, blindness, deafness, lameness, dumbness or fear there.  Only strength, safety and freedom!  How wonderful, too, that we never left heaven for earth.

Just as in last week’s Lesson Jesus’ commands to the man by the pool of Bethesda began with “Rise,” as opposed to first taking up his bed, we are instructed to “lift up (our) eyes round about, and see” because God is our light. I bet this is the only light required on the highway of holiness!

[“The way of holiness” is another name for CedarS as revealed in a Bible Opening to my mother, Ruth E. Huff, the Founder of CedarS Camps when she posed the question “what is God’s purpose for CedarS Camps?”  See “The Origin and Growth of the CedarS Camps.” , a book with this title written by Founder Ruth E. Huff.  CedarS appointed mission as outlined by Ruth’s Bible opening to Isaiah 35 (RR) is “to give each camper an appreciation of spiritual sense” which opens their blind eyes to see the ever-present Reality of the kingdom of God already within each one.  ]

Section 1: Where is reality?!? IN GOD!
In the movie Inception, which highlights the story of an individual who is trying to get his life back by planting an idea sub-consciously in the mind of another, the main character is able to tell whether or not he is dreaming by spinning a top. If the top falls over, he knows that he is awake because the laws of gravity are in operation. If the top keeps spinning, he knows that he is still in the dream no matter how real the dream seems. Even though the movie is about corporate espionage, this analogy can be really helpful.

Whereas it can seem easy to become mesmerized by all that the world tells us is real, I find it helpful to have a metaphysical idea prepared to serve as my “top.” This idea is something I know deep in my heart to be true and can be quite simple: God is All. There is no spot where God is not. Home and heaven are within. God is in control. God is up, down, all-around. God is good. God is Love. Man is made in the image and likeness of God or even “God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (B1) Holding to this, it is easy to detect whether or not you are awake to reality vs. seem to be mesmerized because your “top idea” can serve as a measuring stick of Truth.  If the suggestion doesn’t match up to your “top idea”, you know it is unreal and you aren’t even tempted into believing it.

God’s thoughts are eternal. (S2) So, we needn’t get caught up in what the eyes see or ear hears (B5) or what testimony we seem to gather with our limited senses.  After all, “…real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God.” (S3)  This consciousness is harmonious and eternal.  Every single suggestion of inharmony is unreal and can never match up to the understanding that God saw everything he had made as harmonious, good and complete.  Therefore, we know it’s unreal and as the reflection of Mind, we cannot be made to believe discord.

(Note: You can [click on http://www.cedarscamps.org/metaphysical/audio/ , scroll down to 7-12-13 and] listen to or download a great Prac Talk by CedarS CIP Practitioner Debra Woodward called “1 Thing You Know about God”.  It complements the “Inception” top analogy.  You may also enjoy reading through “The Deep Things of God” from Unity of Good [p. 13-p. 16] in conjunction with citations B5 and S3)

Section 2: Open Your Eyes to What’s Real!!
In her article called “Precept Upon Precept,” Mrs. Eddy says, “No evidence before the material sense can close my eyes to the scientific proof that God, good, is supreme.” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 277) What a perfect affirmation to remember whilst reading the story of Elisha and his prayer to open his servant’s eyes to see that they were perfectly safe. After all, being one on the side with God is not only a majority, it is a monopoly. [See video and script options in Warren’s endnotes, Section 2.]

According to Dummelow’s One Volume Bible Commentary, II Kings 6:17 can be compared with Ps 34:7 and 91:4 and the mention of their being horses and chariots of fire “round about Elisha” only supports many other examples of God’s servants experiencing spiritual security and protection in the midst of danger.

Even though the Syrian’s aren’t portrayed in the most positive light in Section 2 of this week’s Bible Lesson, citation B8 serves as a nice reminder to continue praying about the situation in Syria. We can trust that God, good, is governing the entire situation and earnestly pray for our eyes to be opened so that we can see the good that is coming about through God’s law of adjustment. (B7) In fact, it is divinely natural for “crude creations of mortal thought” to give place to that which is spiritual and eternal. (S10)

Spiritual understanding is really what it’s all about.  Spiritual understanding uplifts consciousness and helps us open our eyes to all the good that is going on around us.  How wonderful, too, that spiritual understanding helps us see what is real with our heart. (S7) Therefore, there’s no need to waste our time with material sense because we can trust our consciousness to Mind.

(Note: CSB, Evan Mehlenbacher’s  “Daily Lift” called “One God Over Syria,” the Sentinel Staff’s piece called “Eye on the World: continuing prayers for Syria,” the Time4Thinkers blog called “Prayer for Syria” where you can add your own thoughts and prayers, as well as articles included in the Christian Science Monitor, are great places to start in praying about the situation in Syria.)

Section 3: “Let There Be Light”
The question “What is the chaff to the wheat?” is such a lovely addition to the story of the wheat and the tares included in last week’s Lesson. An initial response might be that it really isn’t anything because the wheat is really what matters and all we are interested in.

The contrast of light and darkness serves as such a great analogy because they are opposites and therefore, like Truth and error, it is not possible for them to exist simultaneously. In the presence of light, darkness cannot exist. Similarly, in the presence Truth, error cannot exist. If you really think about it, it’s not even possible to have light and darkness side-by-side either. Light is so powerful that it only takes a little bit of light – a “gentle beam” – to illumine a room that seems to be full of darkness.  Even if you put your hand over the end of a flashlight, there’s still a little glow.

So which is real?

In the Bible we read that “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (B13, I John 1:5) Science proves that darkness is merely the absence of light.  (S14)  What is our role in all this as Christian Scientists?  To be the “light of the world” and a transparency for Truth that uncovers and destroys error. (S20)  We do this through self-examination and surrendering any sense of a separate self apart from God.  Once the error is uncovered, it is “two-thirds destroyed” and the rest destroys itself like it says in Mrs. Eddy’s article called “The Way” in Miscellaneous Writings (p. 355:14).  In any case where light wipes out darkness, loss is most certainly gain and results in tremendous freedom and progress.  How wonderful, too, that we can’t ever be deprived of all the light of Life as the beloved children of God under His government. (S14)

[Note: You may wish to review a "urban legend" conversation at the end of Heather's extra tidbits wherein a student compares heat and cold, light and darkness, and good and evil in proving that God did not create evil; see the end of the Met for a transcript of this "conversation" in full.]

Section 4: An Invitation to Feel God’s Love and Behold the Perfect Man like Jesus
Again we read that Jesus is the “light of the world.” (B12 & B16) [See Warren’s endnotes, Section 4, to download a possible script with inspiring insights from Bible scholar, Cobbey Crisler, in a reenactment of Jesus healing the man born blind.]  What a lovely invitation to think more deeply about this throughout the week and perhaps ponder our Master’s incredible example that helps guide us on the straight and narrow or highway of holiness!

The Contemporary English Bible translates Deuteronomy 33:27 (B14) as “the eternal God is our hiding place; he carries us in his arms” and the New Century Version put it, “the everlasting God is your place of safety, and his arms will hold you up forever.”  What a dear picture of being carried and kept safe in our loving Father-Mother’s arms.  This passage reminds me of a flight that I took recently across the Pacific to New Zealand.  After diligently praying about where I could best “be about my Father’s business” this season, it came to me to relocate for a few months to one of my favorite countries in the world.  Though it was going to be a new adventure, I will never forget the feeling that I felt as I flew to the other side of the world of being nestled in the arms of Love.  I was so peaceful, safe and secure; and it was such an uplifting, prayerful experience that helped expand my understanding of divine Love’s care.  This peace and understanding is everyone’s divine right, no matter what the material picture seems to be or what our five physical senses seem to tell us.  In fact, the kingdom of God is present right now for every single one of us to enjoy.

It is spiritual sense that we turn to for what’s real, true and therefore eternal. (S16) Through spiritual sense, we are able to “behold the perfect man,” as Jesus did so perfectly. This is perhaps the greatest gift that we can ever give: to see others as God sees them, even in the presence of its seeming opposite.  To behold means both “to see” and “call attention to.”  There are many ways this can be done – some audibly and some silently – but what a wonderful expression of the fact that “Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God’s image is unfallen and eternal.” (S18)  How beautiful, too, that beholding the perfect man does not come with height, weight or physical appearance.  This isn’t reality.

Section 5: The Healing Power of Love!
Paul also had the opportunity to “behold” the perfect man in healing the crippled man at Lystra. (B18)  It’s interesting to note that neither Paul nor Jesus gets caught up in the idea that the individuals had been in these conditions from birth. (B16)  Rather, they started from the standpoint of perfection and the reality of man’s true, spiritual origin, which brought about instantaneous healing and harmony.  They knew that God is omnipresent and there is no other power besides God.  (S22)

The word “harmony” is used at least 10 times in this week’s Lesson and is included in Mrs. Eddy’s definition of the “Kingdom of Heaven,” (S5) which means that we carry it with us wherever we go, whoever we are with and whatever we are doing.  Harmony is often thought of in relation to music and is also to be expected in the unfoldment our daily experience.  Heaven, harmony is a tangible, present reality and can start from expressing unselfed love. (S25)  Mrs. Eddy answered the question “What is the best way to do instantaneous healing?” with the following reply, "It is to love!  Just live love— be it—love, love, love.  Do not know anything but Love.  Be all love.  There is nothing else.  That will do the work.  It will heal everything, it will raise the dead.  Be nothing but love." (from Sue Harper Mims’ recollections in We Knew Mary Baker Eddy: Second Series (1950) p.49-50; Collection in one volume (1979) p.134; and Expanded Edition (2011), p.296-297).

(Note: If you’re interested in treating your ear to church solos of incredible harmony though, you might want to listen to Jay and Tessa Frost’s CD called “Soulshine” — selections were performed last year at the College Summit at CedarS —and there are also some really great blogs and articles on “unselfed love” at Time4Thinkers.com and some especially inspiring testimonies featured through Radical Acts.  [Click here to hear an original Thanksgiving solo called “Father of Lights by Jay and Tessa.])

Section 6: The Standpoint of Perfection
How often do we take time to just be sincerely grateful for and praise God? (B3 & B20)  It is such a privilege to be loved by God so unconditionally and to be able to know and see our perfection right now. (B23, [I John 3:1-3, the “correlative passage” to “the scientific statement of being”])  This is our standpoint.  Because we are made in the image and likeness of God and God is perfect, we get to claim our perfection as well.  As the reflection of Soul, we are perfect, harmonious and spiritual (S28) – this is reality!

What a treat it has been to get to learn more about both the real and the eternal this week, which can only help deepen our understanding of what we consider reality and how we can never step out of the kingdom of heaven “the reign and rule of universal harmony” (S30) which is always present, within and visible to our spiritual senses. THIS is the real world!

Some extra tidbits from Heather:
[Here are] a few additional insights into this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson on the subject of Reality:

  • As we reason out from Mind, instead of what the five physical senses are telling us, (B5 & S2) we can’t help but better understand reality on an even deeper level from the basis of “real consciousness” (S3) and true prophecy. (S8)  How wonderful, too, that both consciousness and action are governed by Mind. (S9)  Therefore, we can surrender any belief in either separate activity or a separate mind from God because we are at one with our Source.
  • In thinking about the “evidence of the spiritual senses and testimony of the material senses,” (S6) here are the definitions of “evidence” and “testimony” from the Student Reference Dictionary, which includes words that Mrs. Eddy used in her writings as defined in the Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary:

-EVIDENCE: 1. That which elucidates and enables the mind to see truth; proof          arising from our own perceptions by the senses, or from the testimony of           others, or from inductions of reason 2. Any instrument or writing which            contains proof.

-TESTIMONY: 1. A solemn declaration or affirmation made for the purpose of           establishing or proving some fact. 2. Affirmation; declaration. 3. Open   attestation; profession. 4. Witness; evidence; proof of some fact.

Regarding the evidence and testimony that we might be presented to us each           day, it t might be helpful to look to a very practical example of how vastly            different the “evidence of material sense” and “testimony of Spirit” can be, as        found on pg 252-253 of Science & Health. Again, which do we consider              reality?

  • In Jesus’ healing of the man who had been blind from birth, it’s interesting to note that Jesus did not actually answer either of his disciples’ questions. Why? Because their questions stemmed from a commonly held belief of the time that “misfortunes are always the direct result of sins.” (Dummelow) However, Jesus knew that both cause and effect are in God and therefore he wasn’t even tempted to try and look for a cause for the man’s blindness. Instead, he went straight to God for his information, which brought about healing.

Dummelow suggests that this miracle was “intended to illustrate the truth     that Christ is ‘the Light of the world.’” This week, I have been grateful for           the opportunity to think more deeply about what it means that Jesus is the         light of the world and one idea that has come to me is how his proving           that “there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter,” as begins            the Scientific Statement of Being, is most certainly a shining light to us all!

  • As a runner, I have loved working with the following idea, “Mind’s infinite ideas run and disport themselves,” (S23) because “disport” means “to play …to move lightly and without restraint.” I just love thinking about running and playing freely as the idea of Mind, which can obviously be true for any activity.
  • After a Lesson centered around the Scientific Statement of Being last week, how wonderful that we get to see the Correlative Scripture from 1 John twice this week! (B23) What a privilege it is to be the son (or daughter) of God and that we actually don’t have any choice but to be perfect, (B24) as the image and likeness of God.

[An invented conversation… While the following "conversation" has become an “urban legend” that never really took place, it may be helpful in illustrating the logic behind the nonexistence of evil. Heather and voluntary, late-night editor Warren both apologize that we initially passed along this conversation as if it actuially took place between an atheist professor and a student identified as Albert Einstein.  Please excuse [our mistake of initially repeating this “urban legend” as real. Sorry that we unintentionally continued a Biblical tradition of erroneous attribution.  (Bible authors, in order to gain a wider audience and respect for their works traditionally attributed them to well-known figures – i.e. misstating that the first five books of the Bible were all written by Moses and that the New Testament Epistles were all written by Paul.]

The "urban legend" conversation:]
A university professor challenged his students with this question. Did God create everything that exists?

A student bravely replied yes, he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes, sir," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are then God is evil.” The student became quiet before such an answer.

The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a question professor?" "Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody and every object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have too little heat.

The student continued. "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. "These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love, that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

The young man’s name — Albert Einstein (NOT REALLY!)

While the logic and reasoning behind the student’s argument may be helpful in addressing questions regarding the “problem of evil” and why there seem to be so many terrible things happening in the world such as disease, war, violence, famine, poverty, terrorism and death on a very basic level for individuals who might not be aware of how evil, sin, animal magnetism, mesmerism, aggressive mental suggestion and hypnotism seem to operate, we know that “evil is a suppositional lie.” (Science & Health pg 103) And, how wonderful that, as the image and likeness of Mind, we cannot even be mesmerized into believing that evil is real.  It’s just not possible.

(Note: If you are seeking to learn more about Albert Einstein's interest in Christian Science, you may enjoy visiting the Mary Baker Eddy Library website which includes their response to the question “Did Albert Einstein have an interest in Christian Science?” and an article by William Cooper, Professor Emeritus of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley called “On Albert Einstein’s Interest in the Metaphysics of Mary Baker Eddy.”)
