["Aren't you glad you use D.I.A.L.? Don't you wish everyone did?"]
Metaphysical Application ideas for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on

"Man"

for March 5-11, 2007

by Corde Hanzlik, C.S. of Austin, TX

“We're not advocating the use of Dial soap, but the use our spiritual status -- walking in the Spirit -- in all we do! (B#22, Gal. 5:25) Using D.I.A.L. as an acrostic for Divine Image And Likeness sheds new light on this old ad message, that was a CedarS metaphysical theme with a T-shirt version in the 1990s. Since this week's lesson on man defines us many times (B#2, S#5, S#6, S#9, S#16, S#17, S#24, S#26) as "the image and likeness of God," we have divine authority to feel the stress-free worth of being the very image and likeness -- the reflection -- of God! We must be very worthy with God as our constant source who is always taking knowledge of us! The Golden Text says so. Do we always remember this point? It is always the spiritual man -- the "D.I.A.L." -- that we must know. There is a comparison in the Responsive Reading. Are we the "strange children" or the ones with dominion, as cornerstones, happy? We "shew forth all" and are God's marvelous works -- moment by moment -- by reflection! Thank you, God!”

Section 1: And the Word is????? What is our real origin?
Anything that God says is the Word. Actually, God Himself/Herself is the Word, as John says. (B#1, John 1:1) More than a mere command, God sets the tone, quality, and depth of His creation by His Word, Him. In the principle, man is God's reflection, His very thought. As we see in John, there isn't anything that is not of God. (B#1) God's creation has all dominion, all mental might, over or in relation to every situation that the world might throw at us -- including the creeping and the creepy. This mental might includes a reflected balance of our male/female qualities. (B#2) Romans would tell us that we know so little of God and His grandness. We have our work cut out for us! He/She is # 1. (B#3) Let's pay attention (B#4) and walk in the light of the Spirit out of Nostril-man land (B#5) -- NO man's land -- into our real spiritual estate -- into the gladness of heavenly living as "Divine Image And Likeness."
What is Man is the full question of the Lesson. Throughout the Lesson we'll find the answers. Matter would suggest many ideas about man, but never Man. Matter's claims are like the "Opposite Game." What it says is really not true -- even if it is happy and healthy matter. Man -- as divine image -- is not material. (S&H#1, #2, #3) God, Mind is All there is. He/She is our divine Parent. (S&H#4) Science and Health #5 is part of the definition of Man. (Only part of it, look for the rest on page 475.) We have the authority to claim it all. (S&H#6)
Section 2: What kind of man are we? It sounds like there's a choice. Is there?
What is our source? Let's not err in our answer. God, is our Source, of course, of course! (B#7) Do we exist without him? No! We can't be confused or fooled by matter's disguises. We can't do anything, not even move, without Him. (B#8) We'll not make false gods of any material thing -- even if it seems justified. Unless God is the source there is no covenant. (B#9, #10) We are obedient to His commandments.
Who or what is it that suggests the pleasures (and pains) of sense? The lying physical senses. (Go to the Ten Commandments -- Exodus 20 -- to see how each command could be applied to test the value of a thought or event.) Our answers for true spirituality rest with knowing our true sense. Would God give us confused sense? No. We must be obedient to Him. (S&H#7, #8) Mrs. Eddy tells us how we are allowed to have "ego trips." The real Ego-man reflects Ego-God. Yeah! Without the correct sense of ego, we're nobodies! With it, we "D.I.A.L. up" to be "spiritual somebodies!" We must have "the true conception of man and God." (S&H#9, #10)
Section 3: The dumps? We can't get down on ourselves if we follow God and know ourselves as the Divine Image And Likeness.
It would appear that we sometimes get down on ourselves. That would clearly be the wrong ego-self. (B#11, #12) Even if we make what sounds like a desperate plea for help, (B#13) God always answers, sees our "face with joy" and brings back our "soul from the pit." (B#14, Job 33:26, 30)
Mind, Mind, Mind is the answer to all claims. Look at how many times Mind is in this section. (S&H#11, #12, #13, #14) There are no mind games in Mind. When we are God-centered, we can't go wrong. Are we fungi? (S&H#12, 160:30) Fungus grows, hidden, in the dark. Ugh. For sure, yummy Graham crackers (S&H#15, 221:1) are not a divine cure, but do enjoy the grahams as part of yummy s'mores at camp!
Section 4: Elisha's da man! (Read all of his adventures in II Kings)
(B#15) Elisha defies all of matter's so-called laws -- from birth to death! He foretells the birth of a son to the Shunammite woman against all possible laws of matter. The lessons shown here go back to section 1 as Mind is the parent, the Mother-Father keeper. Why would Elisha make such a promise only to have the tragedy of death? We can understand the woman's emotions. Yet, she firmly had faith in God. Of course, her faith was rewarded.
The answer to S&H#16 - about God giving temporary good and then taking it away by sickness and by death -- is a huge NO! and NO! The rest of the citations tell us why. God is the ultimate realtor. He gives man his real, "high estate!" (Sorry. It was irresistible.) (S&H#19)
Section 5: Is Jesus talking about real estate or his Real Estate in this section?
(Before reading this section, read the definition of temple from Science & Health, p. 595) It sets the scene for Jesus' work in and references to the temple in B#16, #17, #18, #19. Healing was Jesus' business. Seeing the right temple was not difficult for Jesus. The non-see-ers didn't get it. The blind man did. This could make a good riddle. What could the blind man see that those who were able to see could not?
Mrs. Eddy calls it a mystery that Science solves. (S&H#21) The Christ answers all of the questions and guides us. (S&H#22) His proof of resurrection put to silence all of matter's noise. (S&H#23, #24)
Section 6: What's our model man?
Is there a decision? (B#20) We know and choose good -- even when we hear the nightly news. That's the decision. (B#21) Do we want to keep the garbage or do we throw it out? We'd much rather have the good fruit. Add to the list of fruits as you "walk in the Spirit." (CedarS 2007 metaphysical theme from Galatians 5:25 - B#22) We know what is acceptable. (B#22, #23) We are God's! He is ours! (B#24)
Which model do we want to claim and be like? Is there a choice? Mrs. Eddy shows a subtle humor in this passage, but she is very serious in its lesson. Again, is there a choice here? (S&H#25, #26) The citation on page 249 (S&H#27) is part of the "lettuce" diet. Really it is "Let us." The Let is repeated many times on the prior page as well as on page 249. Let us accept the real man and starve out the false matter man with the Science of Mind. Excellent!!! Let us also remember to continually use our spiritual status as the "Divine Image And Likeness." You'll be glad you did -- and so will all around you!

Camp Director's Note:The above sharing is the latest in a series of CedarS Bible Lesson "mets" (metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians. This document is intended to initiate further study as well as to encourage the application of ideas found in the Weekly Bible Lessons as printed in the Christian Science Quarterly and as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms. * Originally sent JUST to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson "mets" are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way a substitute for daily study of the lesson in the books. The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension, background and daily applicability to some of the ideas and passages being studied. The citations referenced (i.e. B1 and S28) from this week's Bible Lesson in the "met" (metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the King James Version of the Bible (B1-24) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (S1-30) The Bible and Science and Health are the ordained pastor of the Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Bible Lesson is the sermon read in Christian Science church services throughout the world. The Lesson-Sermon speaks individually through the Christ to everyone, providing unique insights and tailor-made applications for each one. We are glad you requested this metaphysical sharing and hope that you find some of these ideas helpful in your daily spiritual journey, in your deeper digging in the books and in closer bonding with your Comforter and Pastor.) Spirituality is your innate estate that connects you moment by moment with God. (See S&H 258:30) Christ is the gift of light that Jesus gave. This Christ light of spiritual understanding comes with and reveals infinite blessings. So, have fun unwrapping and cherishing your very special, spiritual gift(s)! Then, wherever you are, share them with all as big blessings that make the Infinite difference!

Enjoy!
