Get REAL!  Keep your word - and cherish His Word.
Metaphysical Application Ideas by Corde Hanzlik, C.S. of
Austin, TX for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on "Reality" For March 24-30, 2008

Editor's Note:  The following application ideas for this week and Possible Sunday School Topics that follow are offered primarily to help CedarS campers and staff (as well as friends) see and demonstrate the great value of daily study and application of the Christian Science Bible lessons year-round, not just at camp!  You can sign up to have them emailed to you free -- in English by Monday each week, or by each Wednesday you can get a FREE TRANSLATION in French from Pascal or in Spanish from Ana.  JUST SIGN UP at  www.cedarscamps.org/newsletters

When you give your word to someone, what does it represent?  Your integrity, strength and who you are is put on the line.  If you are not honest about keeping your word, your reputation and honor have no value to others.  They don't trust you.  This week's Lesson on "Reality" is totally about someone's word.  This someone is not ordinary, but is the ultimate Creator.  It is God.  His Word should always be capitalized because He really means it and is almost shouts it, yet it is heard as a still small voice, too.  Do we trust God?  We should.  He always keeps His Word.  His is the only Word.  There is no other power but God's Word.  It's the One Law!

Beginning with the Golden Text we are assured of the warranty time of God's Word.  Forever!  It is obvious in the Responsive Reading that there is no arguing, doubting or second guessing God's Word, Law.  We are safe in the Word's care, energy, protection, light, universal might, etc. even though it a lower case w.  Why wouldn't we want to rely on power and authority of such a Word?

Section 1 - Creative Word - Is there any other Word?
It is established in John (B1), like in Genesis 1, that the Word is the bottom line of creation, always has been and always will be. (., period, full stop)  As usual it appears that mortal man has to talk it up a little, plead and debate with himself, asking God to do things that He is already doing, if He would only "open our eyes?"  Silly man. (B3)  Of course the conclusion is, "Thy word is true from the beginning ..."

The Science and Health citations confirm the fact, settle the debate - everything is made by the Word of God, as idea, never as matter. (S&H - all)  How can there be any other creative power but God if He made all?  There cannot!  Do you suppose He has made mistakes?  (We might say that a little (or big) brother or sister was a mistake because he/she bugs us, but it is not true.)  God does not make mistakes, never has, never will.  If He did, we might think that we ourselves might be mistakes.  We're not!!!!

Section 2 - Actual audio Word - Did Someone say something?  Are we listening as a young child?
If you give your word it is more than likely to someone you trust to keep it a secret and to honor its worth.  That's the kind of individual that Samuel is in the Bible story in this section.  (B2)  Samuel was a "reality" listener at a time in Hebrew history when God's Word appeared to be hidden.  No one was listening to God.  Samuel (whose name means, "God hath heard," Anchor Bible Dictionary or according to The Interpreter's Bible, "the Name of God") was obedient, dutiful and was to be one of the most effective prophets for the Hebrews.  Read his whole story.  It covers decades including "after death."  His mother was truly amazing.  That's all another story.  The point here is that he listened, with Eli's guidance recognized God's voice, did what he was told, was blest and as a result his life blest thousands.  Bible marker 6 describes Samuel's identity.

Why shouldn't we hear God speak as clearly and out loud as many of the prophets heard him?  Is there too much interference?  iPod competition?  Science and Health 6 suggests that we need to develop our Soul sense to literally hear God.  That special, spiritual discernment is what each of us already has, but maybe we don't claim it or recognize it.  S&H 7 is instructional on what our Soul/Spirit sense can and does do for and through us.  Meanwhile, material sense does nothing but lie. (S&H8)  Let's dump that non-sense.

Section 3 - The living Word?  What a wonderful gift.
Of course John means that the Word's representative is Jesus who has a mission. (B7,8,9)  In his usual method of teaching, a parable, Jesus explained the word in agricultural terms that they could understand.  Or, did they?  There are 2 verses skipped (Luke 8:9,10) in the Lesson that tell us that Jesus went on to explain to his disciples specifically what the parable meant.  Did the people really get it?  Maybe not what the seed meant.  Because of the disciples extra instruction, we benefit from the entire passage!  What kind of receptive thought do we want to have or cultivate?

It must have been very difficult for Jesus to see that not everyone understood his teachings, when he really wanted them to.  We know that Jesus has given us what we need forever. (S&H9,10,11)  Don't we find that we must take the Truth step by step to make it our own?  We surely have, "the soil of an ‘honest and good heart'." (S&H12)  Are maintaining our soil?  "Ask." (S&H14)

Section 4 - A fourth type of word - a healing word - not just for God's "chosen" people.
Bible marker 12 is a good verse to remember for many reasons.  God's word has speed, power (strength), manufactured excellence, potency (effectiveness), no opposition, multi-dimension, yet is perceptive and gentle.  Don't we sometimes feel as if God doesn't have a clue how we are feeling or doing and doesn't care?  Is it He or we?  His sword-like word cuts through all the garbage of mortal selfhood to show us our real nature, our oneness.  The centurion (B13, see also Mybiblelesson.com for a description of a centurion) believed the word without question.  Actually he was in awe of it.  His recognition of the Christ humbled this very capable man.  Are we as much in awe?  Do we recognize the sword-like capacity of the word?

Not only is the Word audio, it was/is visual!  Jesus exemplified the power of the Word in a way that the world could understand. (S&H15)  How did he do what he did?  He knew the authority of the Creative Word, Audio Word and Healing Word of God.  The Christ Science demonstrated the sword of Truth beyond time, condition, or space.  As the markers in the Science and Health explain, this power is ours to claim as well, to never be fooled by the material picture.

Section 5 - The spreading/growing Word - Oh, what a terrible problem! A growing-too-fast-church.
The growth of the followers of the new Christianity found some difficulties when cultural boundaries were crossed.  No longer were the Jews the central audience, but as Paul and the apostles had spread the word, Greeks got the message of Christ.  As was customary, there were volunteers who helped to take care of domestic and charity needs.  But due to the expansion of folks, there weren't enough Jews to help take care of the Greek widows.  Appointments for the division of labor had to be organized.  What a wonderful problem to have - too many followers!  Just as the Word is attracting the hungering and thirsting for Spirit, there was the need for practical care.  (Read more in The Interpreter's Bible to get more of the story and what Stephen was to accomplish. He blest many.)  Literally, this a good lesson for Christian Science churches  - to have committees to care for the church, for others, for activities, but never to lose sight the real place of authority, the Pastor (The Bible and Science and Health), that leads us on our journey.

Science and Health markers 21,22, tell us that Spirit is running the show, nurturing, guiding, grooming, identifying its ideas.  Markers 23 and 24, shows us the preparation of the heart for this newly found Word.  Our preparation is all wrapped up in Life, Truth and Love for the completion of the gentle attraction and activity of the Word. (S&H25)  The Movement is in its infancy!  Let's keep growing!

Section 6 - The Word published - who monitors, keeps sentinel, records in journal the heralded Word?
How could the Word of God possibly be contained in a book?  It would have to have a key to understand it.  How does the world find out about the Word?  Jeremiah wasn't the first to write God's Word and he was by no means the last.  Aren't we living, writing, proclaiming and understanding His Word moment by moment?  Who can count the times we turn to God in a day?  (Should we count? Remember from the Responsive Reading we meditate all day!)

Mrs. Eddy wrote her "Word" book for us all to understand and love. (S&H26,27) We have the Science of the Word, the fulfillment of promise, of contract with God, our Parent. (S&H28)  With the Law revealed, we have the opportunity and duty to see, "that infinite space is peopled with God's ideas, reflecting Him in countless spiritual forms." (S&H29)  We're not alone in this!  We have unlimited vision of "all the glories of earth and heaven and man." (S&H30)  We have the Word and the Word makes us free!  We are the Word expressed, expressible, expressing!

Camp Director's Note:
This sharing is the latest in a seven-year series of CedarS Bible Lesson "mets" (metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians.  (To keep the flow of the practitioner's ideas intact and to allow for more selective printing I put my "Possible Sunday School Topics" and Homework options on the following page - after the practitioner's application ideas.)  This weekly email (and website posting) is intended to encourage further study and application of ideas in the lesson and to invigorate Sunday School participation by students and by the budding teachers on our staff.  Originally sent JUST to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study, application and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson "mets" are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way a substitute for daily study of the lesson.  The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension, background and new angles on daily applicability to some of the ideas and passages being studied.  The weekly Bible Lessons are copyrighted by the Christian Science Publishing Society and are printed in the Christian Science Quarterly as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms or online at eBibleLesson.com or myBibleLesson.com.  The citations referenced (i.e. B1 and S28) from this week's Bible Lesson in the "met" (metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the King James Version of the Bible (B1-24) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (S1-30) The Bible and Science and Health are the ordained pastor of the Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Bible Lesson is the sermon read in Christian Science church services throughout the world. The Lesson-Sermon speaks individually through the Christ to everyone, providing unique insights and tailor-made applications for each one.  We are glad you requested this metaphysical sharing and hope that you find some of these ideas helpful in your daily spiritual journey, in your deeper digging in the books and in closer bonding with your Comforter and Pastor.  Have fun unwrapping, cherishing and sharing your special, spiritual gift(s)!
Enjoy!

"Reality" Lesson for 3-30-08: Possible Sunday School Topics, Homework & Application Ideas!

Possible Uplifting Sunday School Homework (P.U.S.S.H.) "Get REAL" this week!  It's not hard to be fearless when you give loving attention to the reality of God's Word seven or more times a day like we do at CedarS.  See (P.S.S.T. -6th s.) for a "take-home tip."  Whenever you start to feel fearful or worried, remember that F.E.A.R. comes from Forgetting Everything About Reality.  So, never forget reality & you'll never be afraid!

Possible Sunday School Topics (P.S.S.T. -RR)  God's Word gives you a flawless memory and quickens you!  I will never forget your precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me."  Ps. 119:93  How would it help you to be quicker in sports?  In your studies?  In your work?  "Touchdown Tommy" Vardell ran the 40-yard dash much faster in the NFL draft time trials after a Christian Science treatment that included accepting that speed in reality was related more directly to the idea of efficiency than it was to any physical factor.  Tommy was a 1st round NFL draft pick in 1992 thanks to that faster time, and to the fact that he never fumbled in 439 carries in his college career at Stanford which also included 1,893 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns.  (Click here for his stats and a tribute to role-model, Tommy Vardell, and here for his 2005 interview with Biblewise.com)  You too can be mistake-free and injury-proof as well as "quick and powerful!"  (See B12, Heb. 4:12)  How can you start by being more efficient & attentive to quicken all you do?

(P.S.S.T. -1st s.)  Give loving attention to have a perfect memory (forever).  "I will not forget your word." Ps. 199:16  "Where there is loving attention, memory is inevitable." (Grace Wasson, CSB)   From this week forward, give loving attention to whatever you need to remember (or want to retain).  How can you use this idea to help you learn facts for tests?  Learn lines in a production?  Learn and retain names?   Also affirm that by reflection you are "God's complete package" including equal excellent in science as well as in art.  Do you seem to do better at English and the "language arts" than at Math and the sciences?  Or vice versa?  A 150-point spread between Verbal and Math SAT scores was brought up to an equally high level simply by my (Warren's) accepting the law that "This divine Principle of all expresses Science and art throughout His creation."  S&H 507:25, S3

(P.S.S.T. -2nd s.)  Treasure God's Word so you will be like Samuel (and like Tommy Vardell) - without a fumble or turnover!  "And Samuel grew and the Lord was with him and did let none of his words fall to the ground."  I Sam. 3:19  Again, loving attention is needed in each possession of a football game (or NCAA basketball tournament game) as well as in each opportunity we have to cherish God's Word. ("the word of the Lord was precious." I Sam. 3:1)   (P.U.S.S.H.)  Listen to a recent TMCYouth podcast, "It's your dad calling!" that leads-in with: "You may know the story of Samuel who heard the voice of God calling him.  Wouldn't that be cool if you could just pick up a telephone and talk to God?  Well, maybe that isn't too far-fetched.  The prophet Jeremiah certainly heard the voice of God and was prompted to write down what He said.  In this final podcast about Jeremiah, Elaine Follis talks about how God is always speaking, and maybe you'll find new insights on how to listen."  (See also B17, Jer. 30:1,2 and P.S.S.T. -5th s.)

(P.S.S.T. -3rd s.)  How receptive and productive are you, as a seedbed for God's Word?  Are you being easily distracted from what you know is the best way to spend your time?  Is a merely good activity or "frivolity" keeping you from being your best and fulfilling your life goals and purpose?  Does your enthusiasm lack the staying power to bring good to fruition?  Will you lose your focus on reality and "wilt" after halftime?

(P.S.S.T. -4th s.)  Can you glimpse a sense of the awe that the disciples must have felt when the reality sunk in that "Jesus is risen!"?  "Felt ye the power of the Word?"  (Mary Baker Eddy's Communion Hymn #298)  "they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out."  Luke 4:36   Jesus was in awe ("marveled" B13, Matt. 8:10) at the trust that the Centurion had in Jesus' authority and power.  Let us (like the Centurion and like trusting sheep that charge a wolf on their Shepherd's command) have that level of trust and experience its healing results!  (To download free The Song of our Syrian Guest by William Knight click here.)

(P.S.S.T. -5th s.)  Acknowledge in the lives of God's spokespersons the power and fulfillment of God's Word that "shall not return unto me void, but accomplish that which I please and ... prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."  Isaiah 55:11 (B15)  The Word was clearly and prosperously fulfilled in the eloquent words and works of God's faithful servant Elaine Follis.  Before her passing earlier this month she wrote of Stephen what should also be said of her: "Stephen's excellence in oratory, described in Section V, came through his willingness to be a clear transparency for God's Word, rather than through his trying to impress people with any personal wisdom (Acts 6:1-8, 10)" "God's Word is Reality," Christian Science Sentinel's March 24, 2008, p. 21 of the weekly lesson column.  For more about Elaine go to a news article in CSDirectory.com.  If you would like to hear a wonderful series of Bible-related podcasts that she did for the TMCYouth.com website click here.

(P.S.S.T. -6th s.)  "Seven times a day do I praise thee."  Ps. 119:164  We encourage all readers to "take home" the CedarS practice of starting every activity (or every new hour) with a "Met."  (short for Metaphysical Moment)  This includes the sharing of a favorite citation from the Bible, writings of Mary Baker Eddy or a periodical that uplifts thought to cherish (give loving attention to) a God-centered goal for the upcoming activity.  We encourage all campers, staff and friends to be active year-round with this tradition by starting and frequently reviewing your own collection of "Met Cards."  (Not baseball cards for the Mets and Cardinals!)  On 3x5 cards each week try writing several favorite citations ("gems") that are helpful to you and review them before you: go to school or work; have a test; start a hard class or project; participate in an athletic game or practice; have a music lesson or practice; do your homework, get together with friends; go to bed; .... Try copying (and reviewing often) a couple citations from each week's lesson.  Some of my favorites this week are S3, B6, S5, B12, B15, S22, S23 and also Carey Irwin's favorite quote (S&H p. 260:13) that is shared on page 8 of this week's myBibleLesson.com  Another helpful myBibleLesson"QUICKFACT" is their reference from p. 58 of Lyman Powell's Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Potrait of her childhood practice of marking how often she prayed on the shed wall of the family's farm.
