[Editor's Note: The following application ideas for this week, and the Possible Sunday School Topics that follow, are offered primarily to help CEDARS campers and staff (as well as friends) see and demonstrate the great value of daily study and application of the Christian Science Bible lessons year-round, not just at camp! You can sign up to have them emailed to you free — in English by Monday each week, or by each Wednesday you can get a FREE TRANSLATION in French thanks to Pascal or Denise, in German thanks to Helga or in Spanish thanks to a team of Ana, Erick, Claudia and Patricio. YOU CAN SIGN UP at www.cedarscamps.org/newsletters]

This week's Bible Lesson teaches us that when we stick with the one Cause, God, we will have all things good, health-giving, and harmonious. The most successful method used by professionals whose job it is to detect counterfeit money and stop counterfeiters is to study the real [so attentively that they know it by heart,] so that they can easily spot the counterfeit, or error [and so not fall for the unreal or unlikeness].  As we abide in that consciousness, studying reality thoroughly [as in last week's lesson] – not allowing anything else into our “door of thought” (S&H p. 392) – we keep out the [unlikeness or] unreality of discord and human suffering. Obeying the first commandment “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” serves as our protection, our health-giver, our source of supply and purpose. The article entitled “One Cause and Effect” in Miscellaneous Writings [pp. 21-30] is a good one for more ideas on this week's lesson.

Golden Text (GT):  “there is none like unto thee, O Lord; …”
What is our model? What do we look to when we need something substantial to satisfy us? [“Who doth His will–his likeness still–is satisfied.” Mary Baker Eddy, Hymn 160]

In the Bible (immediately before the GT portion) we can read about the prophet actually making fun of looking to idols [even a popular TV show like “American Idol”] for satisfaction. “They… speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.” (Jer. 10:5)  The Golden Text always sets the theme for the Lesson.

[Check out the number of times the word “like” from the GT is used in the rest of the lesson. “Like”–or its derivatives such as “likeness” and “unlike” and “unlikeness”–appear like a pattern in every section and are used at least 25 times throughout the lesson.]

Even though this lesson is about “Unreality” [or God's “unlikeness”] don't be concerned that we'll be spending all week only reading about things that don't exist. There certainly do seem to be many aggressive claims in our daily experience [that could fool us into believing in a counterfeit world of divine Love's unlikeness.  To see through the countless, counterfeit claims appearing on our  media radar,] we can get insightful reports from the Christian Science Monitor's daily news story updates at www.csmonitor.com. This allows us to treat unreal situations arising in human thought [as spiritual stepping stones instead of stumbling blocks].  And we need not just stare at them, trying to make the unlikeness of discord go away. Let's focus on the great work God HAS DONE, and let the unfoldment of His ever-present love simply overwhelm all sense of error's reality. “There is none like unto thee, O Lord!” So let's always, only. revere Him, [by reversing instead revering stumbling blocks of His unlikeness such as] medical or behavioral diagnoses, disappointing job interviews, seemingly dramatic weather conditions. [As “His likeness still” you are “Beloved and free, eternally, Perfect peace and joy I provide thee, For I am the Lord, there is none else; There is no God beside Me.” (Hymn 444)]

Responsive Reading – Only look to God [and His likeness]
Let's not give in to any temptation to turn to any influence other than God. Isaiah mentions that “they that make a graven image are all of them vanity;” isn't it true that many times when we make something false into a god, it's focused in some way on self? Perhaps a disease that it is hurting “your body,” a relationship that isn't going “your way,” an employer who doesn't seem to recognize “your talents,” or maybe even a day in which you were so great at everything, it's all about you. Let's strive to always turn our thoughts to God, and then leave them there! Whenever you're tempted to say “I'm confused, I'm hurt, I'm (anything un-God-like),” let's see if God would say that. If He wouldn't, then let's ask God what He knows about how we're doing, instead of trying to rely on our own sense of good. He loves you SO much, He has never and will never leave you without a message of divine comfort, grace and goodness. A saying I have loved for a long time goes something like this: “Even if you forgot to put God in your pocket this morning (such as when the Pack Trip at CedarS starts off the trip by putting a ‘golden nugget' of spiritual thoughts in their back pocket, easily accessible all day), God already has you in His pocket!” God is all good, and as we learn to turn wholeheartedly to Him, we will see that anything un-god-like is just….UNREALITY!

Section 1 -In accord with God we show His likeness in  joy, freedom, goodness.
The Bible passages in this section show us that when we stick with the Word of God — what God knows and says is true – then we experience joy, goodness, peace, and understanding. King David in Psalms (B-4) exclaims, “O how love I thy law! It is my mediation all the day.” In meditating and walking in God's law all day we experience the joy and security that come from this conscious activity. Government by God naturally reveals man as healthy, harmonious, good, and loving.
Both S&H and the Bible show the nothingness of evil and how it never prospers. Citation B-5 in the New Living Translation says, “I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil, but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found”. Mrs. Eddy bluntly says, “Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the so-called laws of matter primary, and the law of Spirit secondary” (S-3). God is symbolized as light – that which gives us inspiration, causes us to feel uplifted, shows the way clearly, and chases away the darkness. [John records Christ Jesus' statement: “I am the light of the world.” (B-22)] The Book of John opens by saying: “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.  And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not”. (B-1) Mortal mind can never understand Spirit or its laws and goodness. But we can rely completely on the Christ-light of spiritual sense (inspiration) to guide us in the right way.

Section 2 – With God you avoid all [un-God-like] debt of living for flesh, [food …]
In citation B-6, we start right off affirming that we owe nothing to the flesh, matter, and likewise, it owes nothing to us (because it's unreal!). If you're involved in sports, it's great to know that you do not owe it to your body to feel pain after a hard workout or after colliding with another athlete. Since we do not live in the realm of matter, but rather in the kingdom of heaven, we are only subject to God's light, and we ourselves can “arise, shine, for (our) light is come…” (B-7) You don't need to wait for that expected phone call from a prospective employer – you can shine, right now, because God has already come.  You do not owe anything to any supposed law of lack or fear. [See *PS at end of Met.]

Hymn 51 is a joyful healing response to citation B-8- “Eternal Mind the Potter is, and thought the eternal clay: the hand that fashions is divine, His works pass not away. Man is the noblest work of God…” [See **PS at end of Met.] We don't need to give in to temptation to blame God for something wrong in our lives; we can start with God having made us whole, and we will see that there can never be anything unlike God, Life, expressed. “NOW are we the sons of God…” (B-9)   [When “the sons of God” is translated by nearly all versions of the Bible as “the children of God” it sounds attainable for all of humanity to be “like him”.  B-9 is “the correlative Scripture according to I John 3:1-3” in the Church Manual, p. 121.]

Citation S-6 is the conclusion to the Scientific Statement of Being [that is read in church services right before the correlative Scripture (B-9)]. What a loving provision for Mrs. Eddy to include in our textbook [and as a conclusion to each church service] –  such a clear, concise outline of the truth of being. God's love is very clear: there is no room for temptation or confusion regarding your status as His beloved child, “reflect(ing) the central light of being”.  (S-7)

Citation S-8 is all about calling out as an unreal lie the presentation of man as material. You never, ever have to listen to a lie. This lesson is doing a great job of pointing out various lies that may come up in our days, but we never need to fear the lie.  Stick with God, your loving Father-Mother!

[There's a fun pun in the cute cartoon in myBibleLesson.com for this section. In it the pot initially tries to talk back to the potter saying: “I'm not an idea! I'm mud-terial!” One might think this section was put together by a “Valley Girl” since the words “like” and “likeness” are used “like” 7 times in this section alone! If you don't use Dial soap yet to start your day or encourage your students to do so, this lesson may be a good place to share the inspiration of mentally and maybe physically coating yourself from head to toe with the spiritual suds of affirming that you are God's Divine Image And Likeness (D.I.A.L.).]

Section 3 – One Mind keeps us from worshipping any unreal [unlikeness ].
One Mind keeps us God-filled and walking on the righteous path [“the way of holiness” Isa. 35:8] with abundant blessings. [A one-line affirmation to help one stay obedient to the 7th commandment about no adultery is: “In God I have everything I need and I know it!“]  Dummelow's Bible Commentary explains the story in the Book of Hosea (B-12) this way: “Ephraim was a strong and powerful tribe, which could command obedience, as especially in the days of Joshua. Baal-worship [with its body-worshipping sensualism] was the cause of the national decay and its final doom.”

Paul tells us that “to be carnally [bodily] minded is death (another term of mortal mind); but to be spiritually minded is life and peace”. (B-13)

Mrs. Eddy speaks of the Life and health giving power of God that she learned from her own experience in the article “One Cause and Effect” referred to earlier in this Met. In referring to the First Commandment and Paul's statement in B-13 she says, “This knowledge is practical, for it wrought my immediate recovery from an injury caused by an accident, and pronounced fatal by physicians. On the third day thereafter, I called for my Bible, and opened it at Matthew ix. 2. As I read, the healing Truth dawned upon my sense; and the result was that I rose, dressed myself, and ever after was in better health than I had before enjoyed. This short experience included a glimpse of the great fact that I have since tried to make plain to others, namely, Life in and of Spirit; this Life being the sole reality of existence… A knowledge of both good and evil (when good is God, and God is All) is impossible.” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 24:7-24)

When we follow one Mind then sin (anything un-like God) is unknown. (S-11)

Section 4 – Only see the light of Mind [to undo any unreal unlikeness or blindness!]
In citation B-16 did Jesus get discouraged when his first treatment for blindness was only partially successful? No! Even when a healing didn't seem to be fully realized right away, Jesus held fast to the truth. He didn't give in  to the testimony of the senses. As we all work in the healing practice of Christian Science together, let's stick with what God said originally, and what has been reiterated thousands of times – “God saw every thing that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” (Gen 1:31)  Citation B-14 is like a quick bio of Jesus – if he had Facebook, he could have put this citation in his “about you” box. What are you writing in your “about you” box every morning? Does that info change as you go through the day? And, if we've written something that isn't so great, is there a law that you can't go back and rewrite it? (Remember that we owe NOTHING to the supposed laws of matter!) We never switch Truth, or try to edit Truth, to conform to the senses. Let Truth, divine Love, inform your entire day. Mrs. Eddy tells us why we can do this in citation S-14: “Material sense has its realm apart from Science in the unreal.” Well… if it's unreal, does it have any impact whatsoever on reality? NO! Mrs. Eddy also says in citation S-17 that material sense is impossible. Nothing ever is standing between us and God. A wonderful thing about studying Christian Science is that we learn that there are no intermediaries in our relationship to God! There is no individual (perhaps a bully, a leering co-worker, or even a supposedly contagious virus) that could ever prevent you from seeing God manifest. We can stick with what we learn in Christian Science, and not fear that something else could come in to change the truth.

Section 5 – Have we got it yet?! [Use every stumbling block of unlikeness as a stepping stone to demonstrate “His likeness still”.  Hymn 160]
This is sort of like a quick recap, just to make sure that we remember what we're doing here. Make no mistake, no matter how much unreality (disguised as fear, gloomy predictions about climate change, or religious or political fanaticism, to name a few) tries to say it's real, “the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and an everlasting king.” (B-17) The neat thing about a kingdom is that the king makes all the rules. The especially neat thing about God's kingdom is that He will never make a rule that goes against His nature, or allow anything unlike Him. We can love the fact that God's truth has come, expressed and modeled in the life of Christ Jesus, and we can trust that his works and promises are carried throughout all experience. We naturally, forever, live in God's kingdom. This is cause for rejoicing! Let's not get bogged down with all the suggestions that come, that seem to make it fascinating to have another God. Just love God, for He loves you, so much! It's wonderful to remember, too, that bad things don't come along with good things. (S-19) We can trust the supply that God gives, the health we see, the peace of a day, without worrying that it may all come crashing down. The reason it won't all come crashing down is that the responsibility is always, only, God's. That's why He gets all the glory – we just express His infinite magnificence. So let's join Mrs. Eddy in “put[ting] off the false sense for the true, and see[ing] that sin and mortality have neither Principle nor permanency…” (S-21) The final Science and Health citation for this section is a wonderful promise that we can trust. These false views WILL perish, and they never have any sway over your state as a child of God.

Section 6 – As Life's likeness you live forever! [and never see Life's unlikeness, death.]
Maybe you could sum up this Bible section like this: What would you do if you knew, really knew, that [as divine Love's cherished likeness] you would live forever? Would you look back on the things you've done (or haven't done) with regret? Would you be impressed with any present challenges? Would you fear the future? No, no, no! Citation B-21 mentions that God does not live in temples made with hands. You can't miss an opportunity that God gives, because God isn't waiting for you to do something for Him, to prove you love Him. Behaving in a way that is conscious of being truly loved also doesn't leave room for a question of acting in an un-god-like way. God's love isn't a free pass to behave however the material senses desire – God's love informs you of all that you already, always have. If God is satisfied with His work, I reckon that you and I can be, too! Citation B-22 speaks of the light that Jesus expressed, of the Comforter that he manifested – that light is ever-present. A present consciousness of this brings healing. And we cannot fear, when we know that we are loved. Citation B-23 says we shall appear with Christ, in glory. Let's love and cherish the natural dawning of the Christ in our experience, knowing that God's glory will always enfold us and care for us, our children, our grandparents, our pets and everything else that God made. Mrs. Eddy says it very plainly, in citation S-22: “Life and being are of God.” (S&H 103:31-32) What room does that leave for anything else? Isn't it interesting how even a lesson on unreality really ends up speaking only about the true reality of God's love? An analogy I love is the one about the glass with soap in it. If you have a glass with soap in it, you can spend a while trying to scrub it out, wipe it fresh and clean, and still maybe not know if the soap is all gone – you focused on it so much and yet maybe it is still there. Or, you can put the glass under the faucet and let the natural action of the flowing water carry the soap away. I like to think of the water as representing angels, “God's thoughts passing to man;” (S&H 581:4) You may enjoy reading Mrs. Eddy's brief passage on angels in Miscellaneous Writings, starting on page 306. No matter what claims of unreality are trying to define our day, or the day of a loved one, we can hold confidently to the truth that God's angels are ALWAYS passing to you, naturally and immediately overwhelming any lie. In citation S-24, Mrs. Eddy states the facts very simply: “When spiritual being is understood in all its perfection, continuity, and might, then shall man be found in God's image.” (S&H 325:13-15) On a police force, a detective always knows that he just has to find the facts in order to make the whole case plain. In Christian Science, we've been given the facts already! Let's love to be witnesses to the consistent, loving unfoldment of these facts, bringing healing, joy, and peace.

Section 7 –[When we see and side with divine Love and “subordinate” every unlikely, “false testimony of the corporeal senses… we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere.” (S-30)]
Love is the answer. It is our protection, our care-giver, the cause of our brotherhood. I've loved reading the Amplified Edition of Christian Healer (Yvonne Cache von Fettweis and Robert Townsend Warneck) which talks a lot of Mrs. Eddy's admonishing of the need to love more. She advised one student: “O do show me how great is your love for God by forgiving, yea more, by loving all mankind, and for once I ask it show yourself the best Christian of the two by taking the first step toward reconciliation. Will you do this dear? My heart bleeds with this name among me – that we are not brethren.  I would humble myself in the dust to have this otherwise” (p. 167).

And in reference to Love and healing: “The healing will grow more easy and be more immediate as you realize that God, Good, is all and Good is Love. You must gain Love, and lose the false sense called love. You must feel the Love that never faileth, — that perfect sense of divine power that makes healing no longer power but grace. Then you will have the Love that casts out fear, and when fear is gone doubt is gone and your work is done. Why? Because it never was undone” (p. 167).

Citation S-28 says “Clad in the panoply of Love human hatred cannot reach you”. No error for that matter can find you [because you are a target out of range]. Citation B-24 states: “he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him”. So, if we want to dwell in God – which we all do because that is Life, health, and happiness – we simply dwell in love, live Love.   We show our love for God by our love for man – our love of the brotherhood [and “we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere.” (S-30)]

*[ PS-2nd section: Let your work this Tuesday (9-28) at 2pm EST be participating in the live audio chat about “Looking for work? Start with prayer.” with Steven Salt, C.S.B. at http://www.spirituality.com/chats/index.jhtml

**[ PS-2nd section: It's also fun to know that citation B-8 from Isa. 45 was the inspiration for two great hymns that were purposely written in Christianly scientific language. In the Golden Text notes, I quoted another verse of Hymn 444 which starts as a direct quote of Isa. 45:5 (B-8).  MyBibleLesson.com has a whole page history about “Mary Alice Dayton and her Hymn 51 ‘Eternal Mind the Potter is,..” courtesy of The Mary Baker Eddy Library whose website will soon have a permanent link to last week's video webcast with Val Kilmer entitled “Strength of Spirit: Engaging with Mary Baker Eddy 100 years Later.”]

[PSST-Tear up all un-God-like lies about the divine reflector & likeness!]
Possible Sunday School Topics by Merrill Boudreaux [w/ italics by Warren]
for the Christian Science Bible lesson for October 3, 2010: “Unreality”

P.S.S.T. – Golden Text (GT) – [Like WOW!]
Ask students to provide synonyms for God, besides the seven prominent synonyms Mary Baker Eddy provided in Science and Health and perhaps even suggested from the Golden Text.   For example: Good, The Great One, The Mighty One, The First Speaker.  The intent is to open thought to the universal, infinite nature of God.  The synonyms need not be one word responses. [As mentioned in this week's Met, the word “like”–or its derivatives such as “likeness” and “unlike” and “unlikeness”–appear like a pattern in every section and are used at least 25 times throughout the lesson. CedarS full Met has more on this and is translated into 4 languages to help native-speakers as well as language students apply the lesson more fully.]

P.S.S.T. – Responsive Reading (RR) –
What is the prominent relationship between God and that which God created stated in the RR?  God is first, that which formed everything; we are result, witnesses, servants, [likeness]. Ask students to define the words graven image and molten.  Why are the names Jacob and Israel combined via the conjunction “and”?  There is an opportunity here to have students read the story of Jacob's wrestling and his resulting name change to Israel in Genesis 31:24-30.  What other Bible characters had name-changing experiences?  (Saul-Paul, Simon-Peter)  What do the name changes represent?  A significant change in thought and shift in actions or how they lived their lives.
[At CedarS when Bible Lands Park visitors go on “The Road to Damascus” they are reminded that that is where a new view of the Christ made all things new for Saul-Paul. (Acts 9) A fun poem called “A Chance to be New” is worth sharing in Sunday School with those wanting to experience a fresh start and a new nature for themselves and others. The poem contains the line: “If you give me the chance to be new, I'll tear up the lies that have been said about you”-or something like that. I couldn't find it in “Found Volumes”. If you have a copy or more info on it, please email director@cedarscamps.org and I will share it with everyone.]

P.S.S.T. – Section 1 – What is the Word of the Lord?  Truths, guiding principles, rules, laws, revelatory statements about every idea created by God, Good, Mind, Life, The Great One. Is God all?  Is God perfect?  Is God Spirit?  Is God good?  Then what are the derivatives?  This silences any suggestion of the possibility of any other Word, Truth, or Being outside of God and that which God creates. Why?  Because there is no “outside” to God. No Doubt

P.S.S.T. – Section 2 – How is God like a potter in citation B8?**  How is man identified as reflection in citation S7?  Have students look to the chapter, Recapitulation, for answers to the questions: “What is God?” 465:8-10 and “What is Man? 475:5. Pay particular attention to 475:20 “…that which possesses no life, intelligence, nor creative power of his own, but reflects spiritually all that belongs to his Maker.”  This [spiritual reflectance] is at the heart, the essence, of this week's lesson.
[A fellow Sunday School teacher just reminded me of a healing at CedarS that was simply brought about with this concept. A program leader was in PAL House (CedarS care facility) struggling to find the perfect passages and ideas that would bring healing to a physical problem that had been troubling her. One of the Sr. Counselors on her staff dropped by and asked: “What do you call that red thing mounted above your rear tire?” “A reflector?”, she answered. “Right! Now, how hard does a reflector have to work to do its job?” “Not hard at all.” “Right! And you have everything you need to effortlessly do your job as a reflector too.” The counselor happily bounded off to teach an activity and soon after so did her boss, “carefree and strong” reflector. (Hymn 453)]

P.S.S.T. – Section 3 – How many Minds are there?  Only one!  Is that Mind immortal?  Yes.  Is there a mortal Mind?  Absolutely not.  See citations S10, S11.  What happened to Ephraim when he chose to turn from the One Mind to some other representation for worship (Baal)?  B12.  Who was Ephraim?  The youngest son of Joseph, who received a blessing from his grandfather, Jacob.  Why would his grandfather by-pass all the other children of Jacob-Israel to give a “fertile land” (Hebrew meaning of Ephraim) to Ephraim?  This land was “highland country north of Jerusalem” and “stretched some twenty miles north and thirty miles west into part of the coastline.”  It was an important central location.  Perhaps Ephraim demonstrated some spiritual qualities aligned with the Children of Israel.  See S&H 583:5.  Help students see the need to be aware of ego, hubris, swagger as compared to humility, witness, serving.

P.S.S.T. – Section 4 – The statement in citation B14 is closer to the real Ephraim in the previous section.  Have students read aloud citation B14.  To whom, in this class, has God given this role of servant of God, created by God?  Everyone.

P.S.S.T. – Section 5 – What understanding has God provided for us as stated by John in citations B19 and B20?  What is a result of this understanding? S20.  You are therefore, capable of distinguishing the Truth, or Word of God, from the false suggestions of a possible other god.   Claim your right, power, and role as witness of God.  [See CedarS Met to work with students to use every stumbling block of unlikeness as a stepping stone to demonstrating “His likeness still”. Hymn 160]

P.S.S.T. – Section 6 – What are the results stated in the Bible portion of this section, of us as witnesses?  We have life, breath; we live move, have our being as a result.  We do not walk in darkness but in light, we shall never see death.  We appear as a result of God's glory.  Why is this so?  See the simple yet profound statement in citation S22.

P.S.S.T. – Section 7 – What is the commandment in citation B24?  “…love one another….”  What are the results of practicing this commandment? Citations S27, 28, 29, 30. Ask students to read these statements aloud.
[Susie Jostyn's “Daily Lift” for 9-29-10 expands on the theme of loving one another: “Sometimes it takes work to be loving. But I have found that being loving is the ultimate exercise which puts me on the real road of progress and fulfillment no matter what I ‘m doing. Exercising love can be an active embrace of the qualities that God has given each of us–and supporting others as they grow together with us. Exercising loving can be the recognition of the inherent, unchanging goodness in everyone and the fact that God has a loving, all-inclusive, harmonious plan for us that can't be interrupted or go unnoticed. Exercising love is effective in the gym, in the workplace, at school, at home and beyond … So, let's go for it! Let's lift our hearts; flex our spiritual muscles; and exercise love.”

[Camp Director's Note: This sharing is the latest in an ongoing, 10-year series of CedarS Bible Lesson “Mets” (Metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians. (To keep the flow of the practitioner's ideas intact and to allow for more selective printing “Possible Sunday School Topics” come in a subsequent email.) These weekly offerings are intended to encourage further study and application of ideas in the lesson and to invigorate Sunday School participation by students and by the budding teachers on our staff.Originally sent JUST to my Sunday School students and to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study, application and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson “mets” are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way a substitute for daily study of the lesson. The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension and background as well as new angles (and angels) on the daily applicability of some of the ideas and passages being studied. The weekly Bible Lessons are copyrighted by the Christian Science Publishing Society and are printed in the Christian Science Quarterly as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms or online at eBibleLesson.com or myBibleLesson.com. The citations referenced (i.e.B-1 and S-28) from this week's Bible Lesson in the “Met” (Metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the Bible (B-1 thru B-24) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (S-1 thru S-30).
