Did you notice that both the Golden Text this week and the beginning of the Responsive Reading are taken from Psalm 93:1?  The Golden Text, central theme of the Bible Lesson, and the Responsive Reading, the introduction to the Lesson, come from an anonymous Psalm of only five verses, Psalm 93.

It is not exactly clear when this Psalm was written, although many commentaries place the time at the end of the Jewish exile in Babylon. At this time Cyrus, the Persian, was in power.  Bible and archaeological records show a king that learned to respect the traditions of those he ruled.  These records also appear to indicate that Cyrus had been convinced of the legitimacy of the religion of the Jews.   And Cyrus declared the right of the Jewish exiles to return home to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple.  At the following links you can find interesting discussions of this time.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/chr/calvin/cc11/cc11001.htm  (This is an interesting link to the commentary on Psalm 93 by the French theologian, John Calvin.)

Perhaps it is this historical atmosphere that explains why the writer of this Psalm is affirming the eternal power of Jehovah, clothed “in majesty” and in “strength” eternally.  You might call it a period of affirmation.

Golden Text:  Psalm 93:1 The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty;
Psalm 93:1
King James Version (KJV)
The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

The Living Bible (TLB)
Jehovah is King! He is robed in majesty and strength. The world is his throne.

New Living Translation (NLT)
The Lord is king! He is robed in majesty.  Indeed, the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength.  The world stands firm and cannot be shaken.

Responsive Reading:  Psalms 93:1 the Lord is; 148:1–7, 9–13; 22:27, 28
The Responsive Reading opens with our now familiar Psalm 93:1.  And then the praise begins.  Hallelujah!  Psalm 148 praises God for everything.  (Praise: to express thanks to or love and respect for God; the expression of gratitude, worship, glorify, honor, exalt, adore, pay tribute to, venerate, hallow, bless.)  And Psalm 148 does praise the Lord to the highest from beginning to end.

“The Story of Psalm 148
We do not know who wrote Psalm 148. And we do not know when they wrote it. Many Bible students think that the *psalmist wrote it to use in the new *temple in Jerusalem. The *psalmist was the person that wrote the psalm. The *temple was God’s house in Jerusalem. The army of Babylon destroyed it but 70 years later the *Jews built it again.

Psalm 148 is the third *Hallelujah Psalm. "*Hallelujah" means "*praise the *LORD". "*Praise" means "tell someone that he is very great". "*LORD" is another name for God. It is the *covenant name. A *covenant is when two people, or groups of people, agree. Here, God agrees to love and send help to his people when they need it. His people agree to love and obey God.”  © 1999-2002, Wycliffe Associates (UK)    http://www.easyenglish.info/psalms/psalm148-taw.htm

It is like when you come home from a long trip and just feel so happy to be home!  Imagine the Jews who were forced to leave their homes and temple smoldering in ashes and go live in the city of their attackers, Babylon.   Just imagine how they felt when they could finally come home, worship God the way they wanted, and even rebuild their temple and homes! The result was praise, as in Psalm 148 [from all of creation, including from “all cedars”!]

I like to think of this Bible Lesson as just a little bit like duplicating that exile experience.  An invading king takes us far from home and then through divine deliverance, (like when Cyrus the Persian acknowledged Jehovah and released the Jews), we are allowed to go home.

For us perhaps, it just seems like our world has been placed in exile.  The familiar sights, sounds, the constancy of family and society, the recognition of God as supreme, all seem at times far, far away.  Like the beginning scroll in each Star Wars film, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…."

In some ways this Lesson is the affirmation that where, “Matter the Invader” seems to have taken over God’s universe, destroyed the temple of Spirit, and sent its inhabitants into exile, that in truth “Mind the Magnificent” reigns supreme in majesty and strength forever and ever.  Let’s see………

Section 1: A universe obedient to Mind
The Bible citations make it clear, God rules in heaven and earth. [Love properly fills each home and each cabin and also fulfills each one’s “reason for existing”— “to impart truth, health, and happiness.” My. 165 As citations B-1 and B-3 put it:]  “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” (B-1, Psalm 24:1).  “ I am God, even thy God… the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.” (B-3, Psalm 50:7,12)  “He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.” (B-4, Jeremiah 10:12.)

Is God matter?  Is God material?  Few would admit that they think God is in or of matter.  And yet they are ready to give the world and universe over to something other than God as ruler!  Invasive material thinking teaches and believes that matter is the end all and be all of existence.  Here comes “Matter the Invader!”   Doesn’t matter claim to be the force, the founder, the ruler of the earth, sea, sky, and universe?

Not everyone was ready to accept the fact of matter’s priority and power.  Mary Baker Eddy was courageous enough to clearly state what she had learned from the Bible, from revelation, and from demonstration.  She writes in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “The varied doctrines and theories which presuppose life and intelligence to exist in matter are so many ancient and modern mythologies.”   (S-1, 319:15–17)

“The true theory of the universe, including man, is not in material history but in spiritual development. Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and immortal.  It is this spiritual perception of Scripture, which lifts humanity out of disease and death and inspires faith.”  (S-5, 547:25-32)

Isn’t it time for a little more praise for the Creator, Sustainer, and Maintainer of the Universe?  And certainly time for less fear and worship of the supposed cause, matter.  Seeing through the claims that matter sits on the throne, when in truth Mind, God does, finds receptive audiences in sometimes unexpected places. For example, Albert Einstein.

It has been documented that Physicist Albert Einstein had respect for the views Mrs. Eddy expressed in Science and Health.  For example, on one of his visits to a Christian Science Reading Room he commented,   “. . . to think that a woman knew this over eighty years ago”.

(See “On Albert Einstein’s Interest In The Metaphysics Of Mary Baker Eddy”, William S. Cooper, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley, wcooper@calmail.berkeley.edu ) [Einstein is even said to have commented that the Scientific Statement of Being was "The most profound statement ever uttered by mankind." This quote is from page 220 of Physics, Metaphysics and God, by Jack W. Geiss, 2006, www.authorhouse.com.]

Section 2: The abundance of the universe created by Mind.
With the great concerns over climate change and agricultural disruption this section is a must.  It includes practical spiritual truths from the Bible and Science and Health to apply in discovering the abundance of Mind’s creating.  Removing fears concerning crops, harvests, weather change, destructive weather… allows Mind to govern harmoniously.  And as we unself our truth-knowing and loving, we will find that we are able to support the successful harvests of those around the globe.  There is no corner of the earth that is not in the realm of Mind and what a joy it will be to know this fact.

Nate Talbot wrote in 1977, “In the degree we understand Mind, God, to be the only power, our bodies respond harmoniously. That is, the human mind— the essence of the human body—relinquishes its beliefs, its fears and doubts. Similarly, as we understand the government of divine Mind alone to be power, even a plant can be protected by that truth.”

“The beans in our garden seemed especially sensitive to frost, and on several occasions they were lost. One spring, after a late, severe frost, the beans were again frozen. As I looked them over that morning I recalled the Bible story of the three Hebrew men being thrown into the furnace. It seemed those men glimpsed man's true spirituality, his full relationship to God, with such clarity that they were untouched by the usual effect of fire. The Bible tells us of many witnesses who "saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them."3

“What a graphic description of the protection one has as he understands that God is Love and brings only good to His creation. Why shouldn't useful plants be blessed by that same protecting power, whether faced with heat or frost, drought or drenching? I felt they could. And later that day the plants were green and healthy.”

“Mrs. Eddy clearly recognized the blessing that comes from an awareness of God's government. She writes: "The seasons will come and go with changes of time and tide, cold and heat, latitude and longitude. The agriculturist will find that these changes cannot affect his crops."4

“The "plant of the field" is fundamentally a concept in Mind and not dependent on material evolution. This truth, understood and prayerfully appreciated, brings specific and clear-cut protection to the production of our crops.”  Nathan A. Talbot, Protecting Our Crops, May 7, 1977 Christian Science Sentinel

Mrs. Eddy writes, (S-8, 507:18)  “The tree and herb do not yield fruit because of any propagating power of their own, but because they reflect the Mind which includes all. A material world implies a mortal mind and man a creator. The scientific divine creation declares immortal Mind and the universe created by God.”

Another powerful article regarding our crops is entitled, “Fruition,” By George Shaw Cook from the October 21, 1939, Christian Science Sentinel

You can find both articles in the Bound Volumes of the Christian Science Sentinel in a Christian Science Reading Room, or through the internet at http://jsh.christianscience.com/console.

Section 3:  The dominion given to man is to reflect, Love, Mind.
For several years I lived in a log cabin on a ranch in Central Florida.  It was about two miles to the next house.  But I did have neighbors that were much closer.  There were deer, wild hogs, turkeys, alligators, snakes, armadillos, frogs, and birds of all kinds.  Also there was a herd of nine horses that lived on the pasture that surrounded my cabin.  One of my responsibilities on the ranch was to see to the care of those horses.  The ranch owners were not Christian Scientists so I had agreed to seek help from a veterinarian when there was a need.  But one night the oldest of the horses, Molly, awakened me around midnight.  She had come up to my gate, was coughing loudly, having difficulty breathing and lay down on the ground.  I knew that I could not reach a veterinarian at that time of night, so I went out to her side, sat down by her, and began to pray.

Mrs. Eddy explains in Science and Health that, "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique.  He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas;” (Science and Health, page 475)

As I sat and patted Molly I remembered those words.  And I remembered that one of my Sunday School teachers had used that sentence to pray for animals.  He explained since “man is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas,” that meant we could pray for animals and ideas in creation from the perspective of “including” them in our thought. The teacher explained that he loved to pray for animals with this definition of man in Science and Health.  For him it was the true sense of dominion, not domination!

So I prayed along these lines for Molly and after about an hour of being together there under the stars and in the middle of Mind’s universe of ideas, she stopped coughing and stood up again.  She was breathing normally.  She headed off to join the other horses.  But an interesting thing was that for the next two or three days whenever I walked out into the pasture, Molly would always come up to greet me.  It was like she was saying, “Thanks for the healing!”

The following ideas are from the citations in this section:
(B-1  Psalms 8:1, 4,6)   O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!  What is man, that thou art mindful of him?   Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:”

(S-11 545:10–15)  “Man, created by God, was given dominion over the whole earth. The notion of a material universe is utterly opposed to the theory of man as evolved from Mind. Such fundamental errors send falsity into all human doctrines and conclusions, and do not accord infinity to Deity.”

Section 4: Joshua and the day the sun stood still, miracle?
This is the time of year here in this part of Germany when waking up at 4 a.m. is not difficult at all, why?  Because our days are so long and begin so early,  the birds are singing, it is light outside, and when you have things to do you “make hay while the sun shines!”  And the other end of the day is equally long in the midst of summer.

And then just last week we were even further north, on the Baltic Sea. The evenings had a wonderful light until past 10 p.m., 22:00!  How wonderful.  Well, until you try to get a happy two-year-old to go to sleep when it is still so light outside.  “But Papa, it’s not time to sleep, it’s time to play, look, it’s still light.”

That is until it clouds up.  Just a few days ago we had a completely overcast, cloudy day. And I remember our son Noah remarking at the table, “It seems so much later.”  The clouds made everything darker and the day did seem shorter.  But sometimes what occurs on days like that is that just as the sun is setting, it reaches a point just under the edge of the extensive cloud cover.  And in these moments wonderfully incredible golden rays of abendlicht, evening light, bathe the landscape.  It is a kind of light that is so special, so golden!

We read the story in Bible citation (B- 12, Joshua 10:6 the, 8, 9, 12, 13) of when Joshua and armies of Israel went to defend the Gibeonites against the attacking Amorites.  In the midst of the battle Joshua prayed for the “sun to stand still.”  And we read that the sun did stand still and the battle was won.  “

“And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.”

If you research this event in commentaries there are many attempts to explain its occurrence.  The question of just how the “sun stood still” seems to be a stumbling block for those who do not believe in the history of the Bible and also those trying to explain events in the Bible to those who do not believe.

Studying Science and Health citations (S-14) to (S-17) goes a long way to “understanding” the foregoing event.  These kinds of events ask a great deal of someone who believes only in matter and the so-called “materially scientific” explanation of events.  But it is interesting to begin to conceive of Mind, God as the infinite source of the universe.  Things that materially seem impossible or miraculous to mortal consciousness can become a part of daily life.

For example, and not in any way an attempt to be directly compared to Joshua and the day the sun stood still, the following happened in our family.  When my mom and dad had been married for just a few years my dad had a healing in Christian Science.  It was his first or one of his first. Mom had been a life-long Christian Scientist.  My dad was raised in the “First Christian Church” (Disciples of Christ) in Lakeland, Florida.  Just before lunch one day, my dad fell through the floor of a little wooden house and broke his leg.  A co-worker helped get him home.  When dad arrived home, mom asked if she should call the local Christian Science practitioner to pray for him.  He agreed.  Then mom fixed him some lunch and dad laid down for a short nap.  He awakened at 2 p.m. and announced he was going back to work.  And he did.  He worked the day out and came home in the evening.  When he got home he commented, “I guess my leg was not broken.  After all, you do not break your leg in the morning, and then go back to work in the afternoon.  That is just not possible.”

Just a couple years later my dad volunteered for service in the US Army.  He underwent a thorough physical exam, including x-rays.  Afterwards the doctor who gave my dad a sound bill of health commented, “Well I see man you had a broken leg.  But it is perfectly healed and probably stronger than the other one.”  My dad realized he had been healed of a broken leg in two hours.  And that is one of the reasons why he read Science and Health completely through as he travelled on a troop ship to the Philippines during the Second World War.

As citation S-17 puts it:  “There is divine authority for believing in the superiority of  spiritual power over material resistance.  A miracle fulfils God’s law, but does not violate that law. This fact at present seems more mysterious than the miracle itself. The Psalmist sang: “What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? Thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back? Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams, and ye little hills, like lambs? Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob.”  The miracle introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order, establishing the Science of God’s unchangeable law. Spiritual evolution alone is worthy of the exercise of divine power.” (134:28–10)

Section 5: The continuing Line of Light in the universe of Mind.
The Line of Light that shines throughout the Bible is something that has inspired generations [and that continues to inspire all generations today with an AP (Answered Prayer) History hike up CedarS Time Travelers Trail (TTT).  It’s a quarter-mile-long hiking timeline with steps up for significant Bible characters from Abraham to Jesus to Paul… See this week’s TTT theme as outlined in citation B-17]   Our King James Version and the following translations of Bible citations B-15 to B-18 show the continuity of that Light, especially citation B-17 that recounts various examples of individuals who have lived in the Line of Light.

 (B- 15, Genesis 1:3 God)
CEB
– God said, “Let there be light.” And so light appeared.

(B- 16) Habakkuk 2:14
CEB
– the land will be full of the knowledge of the Lord’s glory, just as water covers the sea.”

(B-17, Psalms 105)
NLTRevel in His holy name.  He is the Eternal, our True God;  He keeps His covenant promises forever and remembers the word He spoke to a thousand generations—The covenant He made with Abraham and His sworn oath to Isaac, his son10 Then God confirmed it to Jacob—decreed it so—to Israel He promised a never-ending covenant, 12 When God’s people were only a few in number—17 But long before, He had sent a man ahead of them: Joseph, who had been sold into slavery.  20 The king sent out the order to release him from prison23 Then, when the time was right, Israel also went to Egypt; Jacob resided as an alien in the land of Ham.  26 Then, He sent His servant Moses and Aaron, the men He had chosen.  27 They did all the signs He planned for them to do among the Egyptians, and they performed miracles in the land of Ham.  43 That’s why He rescued His people joyously and why His chosen ones celebrated with shouts and singing.

The following “Quick Fact” comes from, My Bible Lesson, produced by the Mother Church. christianscience.com/biblelessons/mybiblelesson     “The “land of Ham” was another name for Egypt, given because the Egyptians were believed to be descended from Noah’s son Ham.”

(B-18 Psalms 118:27
CEB
– The Lord is God!  He has shined a light on us!

(S-19, 255:1) “Eternal Truth is changing the universe. As mortals drop off their mental swaddling-clothes, thought expands into expression. “Let there be light,”is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres. The mythical human theories of creation, anciently classified as the higher criticism, sprang from cultured scholars in Rome and in Greece, but they afforded no foundation for accurate views of creation by the divine Mind.”

[You can arrive on CedarS Time Travelers Trail by time-transporting ziplines and are encouraged to take (back-to-your-future), lessons of “Christ’s Christianity” as spelled out by the Beatitudes.  (Click to see a wavy-line Time Traveler’s Trail map of how from Abraham on, Bible characters have shown Answered-Prayer examples of the mindset of the supreme happiness of the Christ as spelled out in the Beatitudes. Uniting all periods of the Bible from the bottom to the top of Time Travelers Trail is a chain that ends with this citation carved in granite.]  “Christ’s Christianity is the chain of scientific being reappearing in all ages, maintaining its obvious correspondence with the Scriptures and uniting all periods in the design of God.”  (S-21, 271:1–5)

Section 6:  Jesus heals and demonstrates the Universe, including man, is spiritual.
Long before the era of telephones, telegraphs, fax. Email, text messages, Tweets, mobile telephones, or communication satellites, Jesus healed a nobleman’s son who was sick at Capernaum. They were separated by about 20 miles. But distance was no obstacle.

Citation B-21 (John 4:46-54). gives the account of Jesus healing the nobleman's son. Here is the version from the New International Version (NIV)

46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.  48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”  49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”  50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”  The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.  52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”  53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.  54 This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.”   (B-21, John 4:46-54)

The nobleman (a government official) walked 20 miles to see Jesus and addressed him as "Sir."  Although this man was a royal official, or governmental authority, he addressed Jesus as “Sir.”  And also he had faith that Jesus could do something for his son.  Because rather than staying by the son’s bed in fear and worry, the man travelled to ask Jesus’ help.  And when Jesus asked the man to do something, he did it.  And even though the man's son was miles away, when Jesus spoke the words, the boy was healed.  Distance is no barrier for the power of Christ, the power of divine Mind.

The precision of the Mind that governs the universe is firmly established in this account.  Distance was no barrier and the healing occurred at the precise time that the father spoke with Jesus.

As a result of the nobleman's testimony, his whole household believed. His own faith was strengthened and the event is great affirmation of the power of Jesus. We too, should tell others of the things Christ does for us in our lives.

Section 7: Matter the invader must yield to Mind the Creator!
This translation of citation B-22 (Isa. 60:1, 19–21) comes from the New Living Translation, NLT – “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see.  For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.  19 the Lord your God will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.  20 Your sun will never set; your moon will not go down.  For the Lord will be your everlasting light.  Your days of mourning will come to an end.  21 All your people will be righteous…”

The mythology, the beliefs that have enthroned matter as the cause and creator of existence must be vanquished.   As the Children of Israel learned to do, we must acknowledge and praise the Lord God, Jehovah in majesty and strength.  And through our daily unfoldments, progress, and proofs, the fact of Mind’s omnipotence, power, and glory will be made manifest.  When you think about it, there is nothing really difficult about acknowledging what has always been the fact.  Who is better to summarize these facts than the woman of whom Einstein spoke,  “. . . to think that a woman knew this over eighty years ago.”

S-26 | 209:5–8, 11–13 “Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind.  Neither philosophy nor skepticism can hinder the march of the Science which reveals the supremacy of Mind.”

S-27  |  339:20–25 “As the mythology of pagan Rome has yielded  to a more spiritual idea of Deity, so will our material theories yield to spiritual ideas, until the finite gives place to the infinite, sickness to health,  sin to holiness, and God’s kingdom comes “in earth, as it is in heaven.”

S-28 | 249:8–9
“Let us rejoice that we are subject to the divine “powers that be.”

A long time ago in a universe far, far away and still right here today, Mind, God said let there be Light, and there was.  This Mind is.  This Mind was.  And this Mind will be.  The glory, majesty, and strength of this Mind, that is God, still reigns.  Let us sing our praises like the Jews coming home out of Babylon.  Let us build.  Let us praise.  Let’s come home to the universe of Mind that is, was, and always will be.  Hallelujah and amen.
