[Bracketed italics added by CedarS Director, Warren, who needs help with filling a few open bunks in 5th sessions, as well as with Life-transforming camperships for worthy recipients!]

As I write this at CedarS Camps, the 4th Session is about to begin.  It is early Sunday morning, still dark.  In the pre-dawn stillness you can hear occasional chirps of cardinals, wrens, tanagers, and the last of the night’s crickets.  As the morning light grows you can hear the gentle call of mourning doves.  Then the raucous call of a pileated woodpecker rings out.  The campers are still sleeping but a few staff can be seen on morning runs.  I imagine each camper, counselor, staff, worker, parent volunteer and visitor are feeling like me, eager, expectant of  another life-changing experience at CedarS.  Like some of you I ‘m also a CedarS parent, thinking of my children beginning their next CedarS experience.  It is my six-year old Alma’s first experience as a CedarS’ camper.  Yesterday, even though camp had not even started,  I  witnessed her being embraced, welcomed, and supported by her three counselors.  Her camp session had not even officially started and she was already wrapped up in a gentle, supportive, encouraging reflection of divine Love.  And although her embrace of all the new sights, sounds, tastes, and feelings were not immediate, I definitely saw evidence of a growing comfort.  I know she is going to be encouraged to think of our theme, “Live to Give.”

Something unique about the beginning of this session has been an active consideration of the first fundamental that Ruth Huff, Cedar’s Founder, articulated for CedarS.   When Ruth originally asked God, “What is Your purpose for CedarS?”, her answer came as her Bible opened to Isaiah 35:1-10.  And this formally became CedarS purpose.  Then the next question she asked was, “Shall we have guidelines for training counselors?”  And the “Five Fundamentals” for CedarS were her answer.

On the Saturday afternoon before this session began all counselors, staff, and practitioners were asked to consider a portion of the very first of the Five Fundamentals for CedarS.  In a CedarS Staff Professional Workshop we asked ourselves the question, “Why do you think alertness was the first quality God gave Ruth Huff in CedarS 1st Fundamental?”  We were asked to name a specific example where we had seen alertness expressed at camp.  And then to ask ourselves, “How can I better express alertness in my own thinking, in leadership and cabin activities, in treatment of camp resources and property?”

Well this week’s Bible Lesson is a perfect way for all of us to see how God’s “light and truth” lead each of us into the dawn of a new day.

Golden Text   Psalm 43:3 “O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.”

The Golden Text chosen as the heart of this week’s Bible Lesson sounds to me like a heartfelt prayer that you or I might repeat when we want to know that God is there.  You could say David, the author, was alerting or reminding himself of the presence of the Lord.  Most researchers think of this Psalm as one written by David.  You know the young shepherd David, the David and Goliath story David, and the eventual, King of Israel David.

According to Matthew Henry’s commentary on Psalm 43, it is a continuation of Psalm 42. Reading the two Psalms together is an interesting picture into someone really reaching out to God and affirming what they have learned about God, someone wanting to affirm that they are not alone.  (Matthew Henry was Welsh and a Presbyterian minister who was known for his six-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708–1710) or Complete Commentary.  His work rather than being simply a research paper is often thought of as a study showing how to put Bible ideas into practical life.  Here is a link to the Matthew Henry commentary on this Psalm:  http://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/psalms/43.html )

This Golden Text in the Common English Bible (CEB) reads, “Send your light and truth—those will guide me!  Let them bring me to your holy mountain, to your dwelling place.”

For me these two Psalms sure sound like someone alerting or reminding himself that God’s “light and truth’ is there, was there, and always will be there.

The Responsive Reading is taken from Psalm 119 and introduces us to the idea that the Word of God is ‘the way of truth’ and “giveth light.”  Psalm 119 is based on the Word of God.  In verse 30 we read in the NLT, “The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.”

It is interesting that of the 176 verses in Psalm 119, 171 verses mention the Scriptures, or the Word of God.  There are eight different Hebrew words used to describe this Word:

  • Law (torah, used 25 times in Psalm 119): “Its parent verb means ‘teach’ or ‘direct’; therefore coming from God it means both ‘law’ and ‘revelation.’ It can be used of a single command or of a whole body of law.” (Kidner)
  • Word (dabar, used 24 times): The idea is of the spoken word, God’s revealed word to man. “Proceeding from his mouth and revealed by him to us.” (Poole)
  • Judgments (mispatim, used 23 times): “From shaphat, to judge, determine, regulate, order, and discern, because they judge concerning our words and works; show the rules by which they should be regulated; and cause us to discern what is right and wrong, and decide accordingly.” (Clarke)
  • Testimonies (edut/edot, used 23 times): This word is related to the word for witness. To obey His testimonies “signifies loyalty to the terms of the covenant made between the Lord and Israel.” (VanGemeren)
  • Commandments (miswah/miswot, used 22 times): “This word emphasizes the straight authority of what is said . . . the right to give orders.” (Kidner)
  • Statutes (huqqim, used 21 times): The noun is derived from the root verb “engrave” or “inscribe”; the idea is of the written word of God and the authority of His written word. “Declaring his authority and power of giving us laws.” (Poole)
  • Precepts (piqqudim, used 21 times): “This is a word drawn from the sphere of an officer or overseer, and man who is responsible to look closely into a situation and take action. . . . So the word points to the particular instructions of the Lord, as of one who cares about detail.” (Kidner)
  • Word (imrah, used 19 times): Similar in meaning to dabar, yet a different term. “The ‘word’ may denote anything God has spoken, commanded, or promised.” (VanGemeren)

Another thing about Psalm 119, [the longest chapter in the Bible,] that is interesting for CedarS folks is that it is set up as an acrostic [to help young Hebrews better remember and recite it]!  Anyone who has been to CedarS or visited CedarS, whether camper, parent, or staff knows that thanks to our beloved Executive Director, Warren, we love to use acrostics [to make spiritual ideas more memorable and shareable].  An acrostic is a poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a word or words.  And Psalm 119 is a perfect example.  The Psalm is arranged in an acrostic pattern. There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet, and this Psalm contains 22 units of 8 verses each.  Each of the 22 sections is given to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and each line in that section begins with that letter.   http://www.enduringword.com/commentaries/19119.htm

So let’s see how this Word of light and truth can leads us every step of our way.

Section 1: Let there be light, the dawn of Truth.
Maybe you have heard the expression “Let’s shed some light on the situation.”  For me that is a powerful statement having to do with our own individual role in the “Let there be light” concept.  I have often read the phrase from Genesis regarding “Let there be light and there was light.” (B-1) and thought of it in relation to creation, past, and strictly the realm of God.  But in thinking about this section of the Bible Lesson I began to glimpse something more about our role in “shedding light.”  Citation B-4 speaks of our “voice being heard in the morning” and “in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”  When you think about it, isn’t that a real light giver to the world?  As we devote our thought and prayers to enlightenment from the Word of God, from the Bible Lesson, don’t we actually enlighten human consciousness?  Citation S-6 tells us, “Truth and Love enlighten the understanding in whose “light shall we see light;” and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense.”

Enlightening our thought with God’s light and truth actually begins to lighten the burden of mortality for all mankind.  I remember reading in the following in a bound volume of the Christian Science Sentinel which illustrates the importance of our role:

“The following incident, which occurred some years ago, will serve to illustrate this point. The then President of the United States had accepted an invitation to deliver the address at the unveiling of a monument on one of the battlefields of the American Revolution.  A few days before the event, a federal agent discovered a plot to assassinate the President as soon as he should rise on the platform to address those present. The agent hastened back to Washington with his report, but he stopped off between trains to seek out two Christian Science practitioners who resided in that state. He asked these practitioners to pray for the President's safety, which they most gladly agreed to do. For some years they had daily prayed as our Leader had requested in her message, but this was a call for special prayer.

The proper authorities took the human steps necessary to ensure against trouble, and all went well.

During the four hours that the President was in their state, the two practitioners devoted the entire time to prayer. While they were praying a strange thing happened: they both became almost overwhelmed by a sense of crushing burden, so heavy and cruel that it seemed as if no human being could endure it.

Said one to the other, "Can it be that this is the load our Presidents have to bear?" Then they both prayed to lift that load. These words from Isaiah came to them: "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?"

A new light dawned for them upon the vision of St. John, where the Revelator tells of "a great white throne" in heaven, and of the One who sat upon it. These two practitioners saw and understood, as never before, the absolute supremacy of God's government and the oneness and allness of the divine Mind. They saw clearly that there are not thrones many—just one; also, that there are not rulers many—only One. In the same reality of being there are not minds many, hating and being hated, hypnotizing and being hypnotized, because the one divine Mind includes and governs all. This one Mind is the essence of intelligence and wisdom; therefore these divine qualities are forever reflected by man in the likeness of his Maker.

Two days later they found in the morning newspaper the account of an interview given to the press by the President's secretary. The secretary told of how the President had enjoyed his time away, and had returned in excellent health and spirits, and he closed with these words: "The President says that while on this trip he felt the lifting of a crushing mental load which descended upon him when he took the oath of office, and from which he had experienced no relief until now." It is not difficult to imagine the overflowing gratitude to God, and the humility and joy with which those Christian Scientists read of that interview; nor is it difficult to understand that this was a lesson never to be forgotten.”      (Elizabeth Earl Jones From the October 16, 1943 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel)  http://sentinel.christianscience.com/shared/view/1wjh0c1q7h8?s=e

Section 2: The light of truth defeats error.
The following from citation B-7 opens this section, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

And then we are told in citations B-9 and B-10 of Gideon’s victory over the Midianites and Amalekites.  Actually Gideon did not pick a fight with them.  For seven years they had been attacking and stealing from the Hebrews.  Gideon through a vision received a call from the Lord to return to the worship of the Lord and reject and tear down the altar built for Baal.  At first his own people, those that were worshipping Baal and not the Lord, were ready to kill Gideon.  But then Gideon was able to raise an army and was ready to lead 32,000 soldiers to attack the enemy. God revealed to Gideon that if they won the battle with these numbers there might be the temptation to think it was through the strength of numbers and not the Lord.  So God gave Gideon instructions on how to select those needed for the battle.  He was to observe the army drinking at the river.  Those that drank in a way that allowed them to be alert and respond, lapping from water brought up to the mouth, were selected.  And with this selection process Gideon’s army was reduced to just 300 men. (Judges, chapters 6 and 7)

Then the Lord inspired Gideon with the next step in the plan.  He was instructed that the 300 warriors should divide in three groups of 100 each.  Gideon’s troops then quietly snuck to the camps of the enemy.  Each soldier was to put a torch in a pot, grab horns, and when they reached the camp of the enemy in the dark, all of them should at the same time break the pots and blow the horns.  The enemy was so frightened that they fled in terror.

Sometimes don’t we feel overwhelmed by error?  Outnumbered?  In citation S-10 from Science and Health we read, “ Against the fatal beliefs that error is as real as Truth, that evil is equal in power to good if not superior, and that discord is as normal as harmony, even the hope of freedom the bondage of sickness and sin has little inspiration to nerve endeavor.  When we come to have more faith in the truth of being than we have in error, more faith in Spirit than in matter, more faith in living than in dying, more faith in God than in man, then no material suppositions can prevent us from healing the sick and destroying error.”

Gideon’s God-inspired plan succeeded and the victory was won, but with a clear understanding that it was the Lord that delivered Israel and not human power.  [See Warren’s P.S. #2 on this week’s reenactments at CedarS of God’s brilliant strategy for Gideon to…]

Section 3: Truths free justice.
Here are some new-wording new insights on Bible citations B-11 & B-13:

(B-11) “O Lord, you are righteous, and your regulations are fair. Your justice is eternal, and your instructions are perfectly true.”   Ps. 119: 137, 142 New Living Translation (NLT)
(B-13) “God makes everything come out right; he puts victims back on their feet.” Psalms 103:6  The Message (MSG)

Mrs. Eddy recognized this liberating power of Truth.  In citation S17 she writes, “Citizens of the world, accept the “glorious liberty of the children of God,” and be free!  This is your divine right.  The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your feeble body, and defaced the tablet of your being.” (227:24)

It is not the truth that binds us to the pain and discomfort in matter.  The Truth of God and man brings us freedom, dominion.

This was powerfully brought home to me a few years ago when we had the delight of having Eberhard Lasch, C.S.B. of Mexico City lecture for our church in Dresden.  It was a special lecture tour for Eberhard because he was in one sense coming home.  Eberhard lived and practiced for years in Mexico City, but as a youngster he lived in Sachsen, Germany.  I had met Eberhard years before when he served as my lecture chairman for a lecture in Mexico City.  So we were renewing an old friendship.  I was working in the child care room so I came down before the lecture to say hi and give him a big hug.

It was great to see each other again.  I didn’t want to take up his time before the lecture, so I was about to head back to the child care when Eberhard stopped me.

“Rick, there is something I want to share with you that I know you will love.  You know the last couple of years I have lectured for the Christian Science church in Havana, Cuba.  The first time I was there I got a request for a printed copy of my lecture after the lecture.  I sent it to the church.  Someone had asked for it.  And then the church asked me to come back and lecture again.  So we made our plans and then just before coming I was contacted by the church and they asked me if I could also share the printed version of the new lecture.  I agreed.  When I arrived in Havana this time the lecture chairman simply asked me, “Would you like to know who has been asking for your lectures?”  Well, of course I did.”

“She explained that one of their members had been studying her Science and Health at her desk at work.  One day her boss stopped by her desk, picked up her textbook,  glanced through it, and asked to take it with him.  A little while later he asked about “these practitioners?”  And her boss contacted a practitioner.  He experienced healing and had been reading Science and Health for about two years when I was there.  And he was the one who had asked for printed copies of my lecture.”

As I walked back up to the child care room I thought of Mrs. Eddy’s line from Science and Health, “Love is the liberator.”  I was prompted to think that for years I had thought it might be better for Cuba when Fidel died.  With Eberhard’s account ringing in my ears and the reminder of Mrs. Eddy’s statement, I knew I had to be much more alert in my prayers.  I could see that Love, not hate, healing not death, was indeed the best liberator.  Truth frees!

Section 4: Grace and truth heal, hug, inspire, and “tastes great too!”
We all know the healing power of grace and “the sunlight of Truth” [(S-22, 162:4)  See Warren’s P.S. #3 about his life-altering healing inspired by this citation]  Most of you reading this have experienced or witnessed powerful evidences of God’s healing power.  As this section points out grace and truth were manifest in the life of Christ Jesus and he healed, healed, healed.  Also Mary Baker Eddy healed and shared the Science of this healing power of grace and truth with all humanity.  But don’t we sometimes limit or outline how this healing of grace and truth is expressed.  I share the following examples for your consideration.

This year I have received several forwarded videos that made me laugh, made me cry, and inspired me to know that there is nothing in human existence that can defeat us, when we are willing to be filled with grace and truth.  And I also learned to absolutely refuse to outline how, I, as a Christian Scientist thought of healing.  Yes, adjustment of material conditions is sometimes the form of healing we see manifest, but sometimes, and sometimes very powerfully we see examples of those who live beyond and above all material conditions.  They do not limit their life or view of life to what matter has given them.   They live with grace and they live with truth. They live with present perfection.   In grace and Truth we learn that we each are at this very moment the perfect and beloved child of God.

For example I watched a video about an inspiring man, Nick Vujicic.  Nick is an Australian Christian Evangelist and motivational speaker.  He was born with no legs or arms.  He struggled as a child mentally, emotionally, and physically, but came to terms with his disability.  At the age of seventeen Nick started his own non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs.  He has lectured worldwide and speaks about his belief that God can use any willing heart to do His work and that God is big enough to overcome any disability.  Here is a clip from when he appeared with Oprah.

http://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=091M0JNU

Also, I was so inspired when someone forwarded me a video about a restaurant owner in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  His name is Tim Harris.  The famous quote from Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it” has been the driving force behind the life of Tim Harris.  Born in 1986 with Down Syndrome, Tim’s life has been defined by exceeding expectations.  As a 2004 graduate of Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tim was elected homecoming king by the highest margin of votes in school history. During graduation week, Tim was also voted Student of the Year by the administration, faculty, and staff.  You can read more here:  http://timtheman.com/about-tim/      And don’t forget to watch this video! http://www.godvine.com/Meet-America-s-Only-Restaurant-Owner-With-Down-Syndrome-2917.html

A few years ago someone I know was working in a Christian Science Reading Room. A visitor came in, made himself comfortable, and enjoyed a peaceful study session.  As the fellow left the Reading Room he shook my friends hand and simply said, “Thanks I really needed that.”  That night as my friend sat at dinner with his wife and two kids, they were watching the evening news.  There was a report about a visiting musician in the city while on tour.  My friend remarked, “Oh he was in the Reading Room today.”  His kids each looked at him with mouths wide open and said, “Dad, that’s Billy Joel !”  “Oh yeah, that’s how he introduced himself.” I thought of that little story in regard to this section because of this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBZnGk1nAjw

Through the grace and truth that Jesus manifested and that is expressed all around us everyday, we glimpse present perfection, dancing divinity.  Are we alertly approaching every moment in every day with the certainty that God’s perfection is already manifest, right here?  Are we alertly expecting to see and experience Life in its complete fullness as we let go of all human judgments and limitations?  When do we all wake to realize none of us are to be measured by mortal sense?

Of course Jesus healed and Christian Science continues that healing tradition, but also the grace and truth made manifest in Christ Jesus love can awaken us to see perfection right through every material condition.

Section 5:  “Ye shall know the truth shall make you free.”
Isn’t it “high time” to know that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, ever-present, and not just a promise for the future?   Remember Jesus began his public ministry with, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (B-18, Matthew 4:17.)

In this section we are reminded that Jesus likened God to a Father who knows how to give good things.  (B-19, Matthew 7: 7-11)  Also Jesus points out that the kingdom of God is like leaven (yeast) which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal.  (B-20, Luke 13: 20, 21)

We know that leaven works unseen to raise the whole mass.  So we might say the truth Jesus shared is at work in human consciousness.  And this leaven of truth was certainly evident as Mary Baker Eddy discovered and then planted the Science of Christianity in human thought.

Section 6: Christian Science guides into all truth.
In Bible citations B-22 and B-23 (John 14 and 16), Jesus points out that he will not be personally present forever, but…

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:  but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

Have you thought about what that “Spirit of Truth” would be like?  A spirit that would be with us forever?  A spirit that would enable us to do the works the Master did as he promised?  A spirit that would be available to each and every idea in creation?  A Comforter, healing, saving, redeeming?

Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health (S-28):

“Truth’s immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning. My weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself, — when he shall realize God’s omnipotence and the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done and is doing for mankind. The promises will be fulfilled.

In the words of St. John: “He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science.”  (55:15–22, 27)

[Like a wake-up blast from Gideon’s army, our Lesson ends with this bugle call to action:] “Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised.”  (S-29, 174:20)

Well dear friend, buckle up!  The Comforter, the Spirit of Truth is here and it only needs one thing, you.  It only needs your willingness to put it into practice.  The way of Truth and Light is revealed, it just needs foot traffic.  Don’t you want to follow in the footsteps of the Master and the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science?

[Warren’s P.S. #3 on his healing thanks to the purifying &invigorating “sunlight of Truth” (S-22, 162:4): I can never keep from sharing my gratitude for the life-altering healing I had from applying this citation!  As part of CedarS Bonus Thanksgiving Lesson Met for 2009 I wrote: “After a joyous 2008 summer and fall of service, I found myself agonizing in the passenger seat during our evening move home from camp.  I sang (along with the sound system) many hymns that I knew by heart—thanks to years of camp Hymn Sing experience—belting them out, at first through tears of intense pain, and later through tears of immense gratitude.  For the first part of the trip the disabling discomfort just wouldn't let up—no matter how I changed my position or what hymns or citations I prayed.  The pain seemed to radiate from a huge internal growth that had been steadily growing for several months.  It had attempted to rob me of my appetite and vigor as well as of all ability to lift one of my legs. In deepest humility—and supported by the prayers of the dear driver, of my mom and of a practitioner who I kept calling—I continued to reach out to God and to sing each word with renewed understanding, conviction and vigor.  With tears of joy I cherished the truths about my spiritual nature as if they were being tenderly told to me in order to save my life for God's service—and that they did!  All pain finally broke thanks to this all-out, fervent praying and singing—and I have hardly stopped smiling or singing ever since.  I remain eternally grateful that I took "God-is-All" instead of Tylenol—that I chose Christian Science treatment to eliminate not only the pain, but also its cause rather that just opting to temporarily relieve suffering.  I knew when I got home without pain that I was healed, although the draining and dissolving of the growth took several more weeks of consistent "ray-delineation therapy" which "dissolves tumors" with the invigorating purity of "the sunlight of Truth" that "Christian Science brings to the body." (S&H 162:4, S-22 in the "Truth" lesson)  I applied each ray of this divine, healing sunlight –shining the specific, promising laws and wonderful ideas laid out in this precious paragraph.”
"Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates (refreshes, revitalizes, stimulates, enlivens, energizes, animates, rejuvenates, strengthens) and purifies (cleanses, disinfects, sanitizes, decontaminates, filters). Christian Science acts as an alterative (a medicinal plant that causes a gradual beneficial change in the body, usually through improved nutrition and elimination, without having any marked specific action OR A medicine or treatment which gradually induces a change, and restores healthy functions without sensible evacuations), neutralizing error with Truth.  It changes the secretions (emissions, discharges, oozings), expels humors (4 Medieval ones to be balanced: blood, yellow bile, phlegm, black bile), dissolves tumors (growths, cancers, lumps, swellings), relaxes rigid muscles ("thought-forces"), restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir (rouse, wake up, budge, shift, get up, revive) the human mind to a change of base (basis, foundation, origin, heart, starting point), on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." (S&H 162:4). Have fun letting your body and life singing out about this transforming "sunlight of Truth"!]
