Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

Everlasting Punishment – April 27-May 3, 2015

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS pegasus6524@gmail.com

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Help students understand there is a Christian Orthodox belief that mankind is destined to be punished and suffer because of a decision made by Adam and Eve to disobey God’s command to choose only good and to eat forever of the fruits of the good tree. Let us look to this Lesson to see how mankind is and can continue to be free from everlasting punishment. What says the Golden Text about what God turns man to: tender mercies.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading –

  • First of all, God is great.
  • Second, God hears our voices over cries when we are troubled.
  • Third, God is full of compassion.
  • Fourth, God is good to all.

Ask students to construct a prayer treatment for a world issue that affirms the four statements above that are in the Responsive Reading. If God is merciful, then we can be merciful one to another. Ask students to affirm that God does not punish man. Then who does?

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Answer the following questions:

  • Are you holy? Why? (citations) B1 and S6 (lines 28-31)
  • What name has God called you? B3 and S6
  • Who are the sons and daughters of God from around the world?
  • Has God left out or abandoned any of His children?
  • Does God remember the original sin of Adam and Eve?
  • What is an allegory? Why is the story of Adam and Eve an allegory?
  • What does God desire that you remember? S1
  • Does God make mankind inclined to sin and then punish mankind for doing so? S4

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What role did Christ Jesus have when coming to our world? B4 and S7.
Read aloud together the story of the prodigal son in citations B5, B9, and B11. Consider that the first step taken by the prodigal son to leave home was also the first step on his journey to return home. Did the father punish his prodigal son? Did the father punish the prodigal’s brother? Of what did the father remind the prodigal’s brother? What is required of mankind in citation S13 to annul the belief of the Adam and Eve curse? Are you willing to remove the punishment on mankind? What the prodigal did before returning home is a hint.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What makes you and all mankind a “new creature” so that old beliefs pass away? S14. We must put off the belief in that old sin handed down from generation to generation – S15. Was mankind once perfect? Are we so now? Could mankind ever lose this perfection? If we have lost sight of this perfection, how can we regain that sight? S19. Look to reflection rather than acting out the Adam and Eve belief. What is the result? S20. A permanent peace in our lifetime, in our world – now.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – How can you act as one not punished, especially for a sin you never committed? B13.

  • Put on bowels of mercies
  • Put on kindness
  • Put on humbleness of mind
  • Put on meekness
  • Put on longsuffering
  • Forbearing one another
  • Forgiving one another
  • Don’t quarrel with one another
  • Put on charity

Who is your role model? Christ Jesus. Ask students to give examples of Christ Jesus acting in accord with the above statements found in citation B13.

  • Which is more powerful – good or evil?
  • Which is more powerful – the spiritual or animal?
  • What is the path: valley of sin, mountain of unselfishness, or the highway of our God? What does this highway look like? See citations S24 and S25.

Memorize citation S26 which is also the Sixth Tenet of Christian Science. Notice the comma after the word ‘watch.’ This indicates two actions – first, watching, and secondly, praying. The result then is to do what Christ Jesus did unto others. See the new commandment in I John, 3:23 and in citation S22.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – The world seems to be blinded to us all as sons and daughters of God as forgetting who we are. Will you pray as did blind Bartimaeus in citation B17 that we might receive our sight? This will also require our following Jesus in the way. How? See citation S27. This is also a great memorization opportunity. Science and Health 476: 32-5. What shall we see? Orthodox Christianity and the everlasting punishment foisted on mankind by Adam and Eve? Or shall we gain more correct views of God and man and thus free ourselves and our brothers and sisters across the globe? S28. Where shall your gaze rest? Help students understand their views, their sight, has impact on mankind and our world.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Who loves you? Who comforts you? Who establishes you? B18. Does this also apply to our brothers and sisters across the globe? Read together Hymn 58 (also 438) from the Christian Science Hymnal as a way to affirm what we have learned today.

Father, we Thy loving children Lift our hearts in joy today,

Knowing well that Thou wilt keep us Ever in Thy blessed way.

Thou art Love and Thou art wisdom, Thou art Life and Thou art All;

In Thy Spirit living, moving, We shall neither faint nor fall.

Come we daily then, dear Father, Open hearts and willing hands,

Eager ears, expectant, joyful, Ready for Thy right commands.

We would hear no other voices, We would heed no other call;

Thou alone art good and gracious, Thou our Mind and Thou our All.

In Thy house securely dwelling, Where Thy children live to bless,

Seeing only Thy creation, We can share Thy happiness,

Share Thy joy and spend it freely. Loyal hearts can feel no fear;

We Thy children know Thee, Father, Love and Life forever near.
