Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on;

“Reality”

PSST for the Golden Text (GT) – Who is “ye” in this statement? Is it your students? Why are their eyes blessed? What do they see that is worth blessing? Read this verse in context to find out who is speaking these words and to whom they are being spoken. Once you find that out, repeat the same questions – whose eyes are blessed and why; and what do they see that is worth blessing?

PSST for the Responsive Reading (RR) – Why does Jesus speak in parables? What do Jesus’ seemingly nonsensical statements mean, really - “they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not”? Do your students ever see without seeing, or hear without hearing? Maybe look a little farther at verse 14 to get a glimpse about what Jesus might be indicating here. Once you have figured out all of this craziness around seeing and hearing truly – an activity you might consider is presenting your students with a healing from the Sentinel or Journal (JSH online is great because you can pull healings out from decades ago), or even the story from this week’s Bible Lesson and ask them what their mortal eyes are being tempted to see, and then ask how this vision changes as they look through God’s eyes, with spiritual insight (see SH 209:31 to help define our spiritual senses).

PSST for Section 1 – Where does reality begin? What is the scientific premise that we work from in Christian Science? Examine each citation to uncover the attributes of reality’s origin. Then work out from that right basis - if that is the start/origin of reality, what does that mean for your students in their daily lives, what must be the results of starting there? What does it mean to “prepare for the reign of Spirit…”?

PSST for Section 2 – If your students were looking for a place to live, and there were two options - one lush, and one rather barren – would they allow their sibling to pick first, as Abraham did? What does it say about Abraham that he allowed Lot to choose where to settle his family first? And what does it say about Abraham’s relationship to God, about his faith? How was Abraham looking “deep into realism”? Work with your students to identify current circumstances where the outward appearance of things does not reflect the depth of reality - and then discuss what the impact is when you see past the surface into the reality of being.

PSST for Section 3 – What sorts of illnesses did Jesus heal? (trick question – the answer is ALL of them). How do the Beatitudes teach us to have the character Jesus had in his healing ministry? Where is the kingdom of God? What are the implications of truly understanding where the kingdom of God is? What does the true idea of good do to our sense of evil? Are your students willing to go there? What temptations would cause us to resist this true idea of good? Could we ever be tempted to want to hold on to a sense of evil? How can we stand porter against such temptations?

PSST for Section 4 [Care enough to give each other a “Reality check!”]
Why are Jesus’ healings so prominent in a lesson on “reality”? Did Jesus perform miracles? Can miracles, by definition, be a normal part of reality? What do Jesus’ healings teach us about the nature of reality? Why is it important that “man is, not shall, be perfect and immortal”? What role does our thought play in the harmony of reality? How does Christ model for us the right way to govern our thought and action?

PSST for Section 5 – There is a lot to break down in the description of New Jerusalem. What are the important symbols for us to be paying attention to? How does New Jerusalem relate to our current daily lives? What is “full compensation”? And how can Love have it for all human misery? What role do we play in bringing about New Jerusalem in our own experience? Work with your students to discuss how they might turn “wrathful and afflictive” experiences into opportunities to commune with divine Love? What does it mean for the spiritual consciousness of heaven to be a present possibility? What does it take to bring heaven into our normal experiences throughout the week?
