Possible Younger Class Lessons for the Christian Science Bible Lesson for

“Truth”

Pycl #1: Make a synonym "train". Cut out paper train cars or make them out of small boxes, each car should have the name of a different synonym. We might be a week "behind" here so you can double-time it and come up with qualities for both the "Life" car and the "Truth" car this week. When the cars are all full of qualities, take them out and compare them to see if there are any overlapping qualities. Why might there be? You can keep this project going throughout the "synonym lessons" or as long as it is engaging. But, I think comparing the qualities at the end for an overview would be cool. Maybe you could include a car that says "Principle" and sometime, after all the other synonyms have their "say", talk about why they think this synonym didn't get used as a Bible lesson subject. Maybe, through looking at all the qualities that the kids come up with at one time in the end, the answer to that question will be clearer.

Pycl #2: Why do we have synonyms for God, other than the fact that Mrs. Eddy wrote them down... What is the purpose? Where are they found and in what ways, other than in Mrs. Eddy's writings? Have they ever had a math concept explained in class that they just didn't get, and the teacher presented it in a different way and they found that to clarify the problem? Sometimes we hear God in different ways. One synonym might help us to understand something about God's presence more clearly at one time, while another might be more helpful in a different circumstance. In what ways does Truth, as a synonym, makes us understand God more clearly?

Pycl #3: Talk about truth and lies. When we talk about Truth vs. a lie, are we talking about something that is real? Because if it is real, it has the power of being substantial. A lie disappears when we know, really know, what is true. Knowing what is real is what helps us have healings, because we then are not trusting the lie (sickness, inharmony, cruelty, dishonesty, lack, etc.) as having the power of being real. Talk about truth and lies. Is there really power in a lie? Have they ever had a problem because of a lie? How did they solve it? Do you have an example from your experience that you can share? Are there stories in this lesson that help us see the power of Truth vs. the weakness of a lie? Do lies sometimes seem powerful? Think of the story in citation B7 about the woman's lack of food. Check out the story of Zacchaeus and explain the tendency toward corruption that tax-collectors were known for. What about the man in citation B19 who was healed because he clearly saw something of Truth and was expectant of seeing God more clearly, enough so that Paul recognized this and healed him? This man never thought that there was anything that could be done for him about his lameness. But the truth that Paul preached opened his eyes to what was possible.

Pycl #4: Along those lines, why does Truth make us "free"? What is it that Truth literally does that frees us and what does it free us from? These same stories are great for answering this question. But citation B15 kind of takes it in another direction that is helpful too. When we think of a vine and branches, freedom might not be the first thing that comes to mind. After all, being dependent (with little ones you should show pictures and talk together about plants, branches, stems, roots, etc.), on something for your very existence doesn't sound that "free". Can they think of why being dependent, growing out of, the Christ would give us tremendous power and freedom? What would take that freedom away and why? This kind of freedom is the same kind that we talk about when we talk about the Ten Commandments. Can the kids think of ways that living in accord with Truth makes us freer than living "on our own". What does that even mean—living "on our own"?

Pycl #5: Draw & label fruit. Spend some more time with this vine and branch idea exploring the idea of being fruitful. A "branch" on a grapevine or fruit tree has the flowers and the fruit. Can that branch produce these flowers and fruits without being attached to the vine/trunk? Why or why not? What would happen if it weren't attached? What does the Bible and Science & Health mean by being "fruitful"? How are we fruitful, how does Truth help us be fruitful? What does the vine/trunk give us? Compare the idea of water/soil/nutrients/anchoring/support, etc. to spiritual qualities. Draw a big vine or tree and have the kids draw "fruit" with labels of things which that piece of fruit might represent.

Pycl #6: Try dirty vs. clean. Try, once again, the dirty vs. clean glass of water. Why is Truth like the clear water? Why does Truth make things clearer and easier to understand? Why does the lie make things murkier and harder? (Do you have a good story or legend that illustrates this? There are Bible stories also—think Joseph's story—he was jailed for a lie about himself, did Truth prevail in the end? Did it happen instantly? Was it "worth" the wait?).
