P.S.S.T. Golden Text – How do you know that God is good? What evidence do you have?

Help students define “mercy”: compassion or kindly forbearance shown to another; benevolence; pardon; blessing

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – Based on the mercy definition just given, ask students to pick out words or phrases in the Responsive Reading that corroborate that definition

  • My voice shalt thou hear
  • Not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness
  • Let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice
  • Thou defendest them
  • Wilt bless the righteous
  • With everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee

What evidence of God’s goodness is stated in Psalms 1:1-3? How is man (you) like a tree planted by the rivers of water?

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What attributes of God’s goodness are written in this section? How long has and will God love you? B-4. Does the law of God condemn man and cause him to sin, be sick, or die? S-4. Can man choose to depart from holiness or have the freedom to sin? S-5. Are you included in the family of ideas God imparts? S-6. What does it mean to move in accord with God? What are some synonyms of “moving in accord”? Reflection, expression, synchronicity.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Why did Moses flee? B-5. What did Moses learn in the wilderness? B-6 and B-7. Does “chasten” mean to punish? Since God does not punish man, what indeed is punished? See Tenet #3 in Science & Health 497:9. See also the definition of “wilderness” in SH 597:16.

If chasten also means discipline, correct, or instruct, how did Moses’ time in the wilderness chasten him?

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Read together B-9. What does it mean to “repent”? Reform, transform, change of mind, sorrow for doing wrong. Does this occur just by asking another for forgiveness? Is something else required? S-17. What key words are listed in S-17 as the evidence that reformation or transformation has or is occurring?

What does it mean to reach the Horeb height as stated in S-18? Horeb is often synonymous with Mount Sinai. Where is Mt. Sinai? What happened to Moses there? What footsteps of Truth did Moses find there? How does following the 10 Commandments provide the path to neverlasting punishment?

Read together Hymn 297 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below). What in this hymn corresponds with Moses’ Horeb or Mt. Sinai experience?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Did Jesus also have mountain experiences? What were they?

  • Following the 40 days in the wilderness he was led to the temptation (Matthew 4:1-11)
  • Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-7)
  • Providing the Beatitudes (Matt. 5:1-12)
  • Mount of Olives (Luke 22:39-43)

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Will God withhold tender mercies from you? How did Jesus demonstrate God’s tender mercies to the man sick of the palsy in B-15?

Read together Hymn 445 in the Supplement to the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

Here is a good memory opportunity in S-25. This is you – “…possessing unlimited divine beauty and goodness without a single bodily pleasure or pain…”

P.S.S.T. Section 6 –What is a definition of “righteous”? Right thinking and right acting. What is your role as the redeemed (chastened, reformed, transformed) of the Lord? B-18. Where does this redemption occur? Certainly in one’s thinking, in one’s character, and acted upon in how one lives. What is the right time for this redemption, chastening, reformation, transformation to occur? S-28. We have the best aid available in the teachings of Christian Science. Read together in SH 323:6-32. Are you willing? Read together in SH 323:32-6.

Think together about punishment as not necessarily negative but as reformation, transformation. It is indeed positive, purifying, and aligning one’s thought with everlasting Love, everlasting guidance, everlastingly showing you the way.

Conclude with reading together Hymn 42 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

Hymn 297:

Science, the angel with the flaming sword,

God’s gift, the glory of the risen Lord;

Light of the world, in whose light we shall see

Father and perfect Son, blest unity;

Calm of Shekinah where hope anchors fast,

Harbor of refuge till the storm be past;

Sweet, secret place where God and men do meet,

Horeb whereon we walk with unshod feet;

Place of communion with the Lamb of God,

Fold where the sheep must pass beneath His rod;

Ark where the dove may close her faltering wings,

Love’s law divine that makes us priests and kings;

Loosener of prison bands at midnight hour,

Of self-forged chains that fall through Love’s all-power;

Christ’s morning meal by joyous Galilee:

Science, thou dost fulfill all prophecy.

Hymn 445:

I awake each morn to a brand-new day,

Singing Hallelujah! as I go on my way,

For my heart is fixed on this one guarantee:

The Love that is All holds me tenderly.

REFRAIN: Tender mercies, oh tender mercies,

Tender mercies are holding me.

Tender mercies, oh tender mercies,

Tender mercies are holding me.

I can walk with Love through the valley of fear,

Singing Hallelujah! my Savior is here!

The desert of my longing no hope can fulfill,

But Love meets all need and bids want be still.

REFRAIN

So no matter the need and no matter the threat,

I’m secure in Your love, no fear, no regret.

Can there be a sweeter comfort, a grace more divine,

Than the thought that Your love is here and is mine?

REFRAIN

Hymn 42:

Come, Thou all-transforming Spirit,

Bless the sower and the seed;

Let each heart Thy grace inherit;

Raise the weak, the hungry feed;

From the Gospel, from the Gospel

Now supply Thy people’s need.

O, may all enjoy the blessing

Which Thy holy word doth give;

Let us all, Thy love possessing,

Joyfully Thy truth receive;

And forever, and forever

To Thy praise and glory live.
