Pycl #1: With smaller children, it might be fun to find a smaller utility closet in your church. After explaining that the "closet" that Jesus mentions in the Responsive Reading, should really be translated closer to something like "storehouse" or even "treasure house". This storehouse in Jesus' day was usually the only one with a door and held all the supplies for the home. So Jesus wasn't telling us to go somewhere empty, rather to a place filled with all that we need! But when you've explained that you can go inside a closet and shut the door. Ask them from inside: "what do you hear?" "Is it quieter in here than out there?" "Why might Jesus have told us to shut the door?" By the way, you can turn on a light if there is one; it doesn't have to be dark! You can explain that mentally, our spiritual closet/storehouse is filled with good thoughts from God, right ideas, healing insights, love, harmony... Maybe they can come up with some ideas of what is in their "storehouse".

Pycl #2: Why do we pray? See what kinds of answers you get. I think it's hard to grasp sometimes that we don't pray to change something from bad to good. Try looking at the Lord's Prayer together and see what you find in there that might help to answer this question. Right away you will notice that we are turning to our Creator, our Father-Mother right? So maybe one answer would be that we might expect that our Father or Mother would know us really well, love us unconditionally, care about us... seems like a good place to turn! Another thing to really work with is found in citation S17. Especially, "Prayer cannot change the Science of being, but it tends to bring us into harmony with it." In other words, we aren't praying to change something. We are tuning in to what is already perfect, harmonious and true! You could use the radio station tuning analogy here, it's an "oldie but goodie"! (The radio waves are out there bouncing around no matter whether we hear them or not, our thought is kind of like the radio receiver, we turn the dial until the station/God's thoughts come(s) in loud and clear. We can't hear anything but static if we don't tune into a station!).

Pycl #3: There are many links this week between the Lord's Prayer and the subject of the lesson. I've included some in CedarS Met for this week. But some other ties that might interest the kids are the idea of how the Kingdom of heaven includes all those storehouse ideas. It is the place where man always has dwelt, eternally, never "kicked out" as in the Adam and Eve model. Humility that comes with serving God and putting His will above all, fits well in the Kingdom where harmony must reign because all are sons and daughters of God. Could there be any lack of forgiveness there then? Obviously, in His Kingdom He feeds and shelters His creation, right? So there is your "daily bread". The Kingdom is governed and ordered by God, Love, Mind. There are no sneaky serpents slithering around because He is in control, ordering things rightly. No temptation in that place! You can take these lines and expand on them with the children, I think. I am just giving an outline to work with that touches on most of the lines.

Pycl #4: I think Barry Huff's line-by-line, short, recorded thoughts on the Lord's Prayer are very helpful and inspiring. Here is a link to these. They are not for the youngest children, but maybe eight-yearand up. http://www.christianscience.com/youth/sunday-school/resources/the-lord-s-prayer I have found (as have some others) that the last recording, despite its title, repeats the contents of the one before instead of the final lines. [Warren has emailed a request that this misdirected link be fixed, but it wouldn’t hurt for others to also ask.]

Pycl #5: Let's try to answer some little bit of Mrs. Eddy's challenge in citation S8. She tells us that: "The grand necessity of existence is to gain the true idea of what constitutes the kingdom of heaven in man." What does constitute this in each of us? Maybe they will have some ideas that work for them or some thoughts on how to pursue this challenge.

Pycl #6: How do we know what God's will is vs. our "own" will? Let them think of things!

Pycl #7: I've been thinking about the daily bread part of the Lord's Prayer and asking myself what it means to really hunger and thirst after righteousness, after understanding of God. This is where I think progress comes into play. When we know that we are truly praying to know God and have set aside our own desires for comfort, knowing that they will be felt in this truer pursuit. It's related to knowing God's will.

Pycl #8: Look at the Bible story in citation B20, a parable about forgiveness. Check to see that they get what Jesus was saying about forgiving 70 times 7. (That is, without limit.) Talk about what forgiveness is. Is it hard to do? Why? Most often it's because we think that the bad thing done to us was done by a person that we know or love. Sometimes a stranger, yes. But we think it's a person, separate from us and God. We give that person power over our happiness because we don't think that the wrong done to us is actually impersonal error, sort of like the belief in minds many, if you will. Make up a story where two friends get in a spat over something, but don't realize that a third party actually caused the problem. Dramatize it. It is kind of like that in every case. We just think it's a "person". Really it is error. If we release that person from the error, we are able to forgive and love them!
