Metaphysical Application Ideas for the Christian Science Bible Lesson — June 20-26, 2016

This lesson shows how Christian Science fulfills God’s promise to send a Comforter that will forever be available to all mankind. Look for the many references to “promise” throughout the lesson. Look for the many references to God’s oneness and goodness. — and the power and authority God brings to His people. Christian Science is much more than a denomination. One way to think of it is as a system of Truth that reveals the fullness of God in a practical way that saves mankind from the limitations of false, material belief. I’ve come to think of it as the “knowledge of Christianity,” illumining Jesus’ teachings in a way that is universal and can be practiced by all. It enables every part of the Bible to be interpreted from a completely inspired, spiritual perspective. Taking “the inspired Word of the Bible” doesn’t mean picking and choosing parts of the Bible to keep, and discarding the rest. It means thinking deeply about every part of the Bible to find what is truly being revealed there about God and man’s relationship to God — going beneath the surface and getting beyond the fog of human doctrine. Mrs. Eddy used to open the Bible at random and expound on the spiritual meaning (the inspired Word) of any particular passage. She challenged her students to do the same. Challenge yourself to continually listen for Christ’s voice in order to see things from an entirely spiritual perspective. Christian Science is the Comforter that Jesus promised would come after he was gone — and it is available to all for the healing of the nations!

Golden Text: After listening to Peter speak on the day of Pentecost, many were ready to follow him in following Christ. Peter urged those making inquiry to repent and be baptized. He assured them that everything he had been telling them was indeed a promise to them and to their children, and to all. The Greek word rendered “promise” here can also be translated as a “divine assurance of good.” God’s assurance of good is for all people of all time! That certainly includes us — and all future generations!

Responsive Reading: It’s easy to have faith — to have a sense of conviction and expectation — if we have reason to believe that something good is sure to happen. The Bible gives us lots of reasons to believe good is going on. It is full of evidence of God’s fulfilling His promises to deliver people, give them needed strength, protect them and guide them. And, reading the Sentinel and Journal we see many more current examples. A modern definition of promise is “an assurance that a particular thing will happen.” If it is God that is promising, the assurance is always that good will happen. Progress is God’s perpetual promise. That’s why we shouldn’t be satisfied with judging things according to what the material senses have to say about it. As we maintain a conviction that there is always an answer (maintain our faith), we will discover “new heavens and a new earth” that can simply be thought of as the spiritual nature of all things here and now just waiting to be recognized and revealed. As we keep our faith — and keep looking for this reality — we find evidence of the strength, guidance, health, and protection that God promises to all! And that promise never expires — is never reversed.

Section 1: Recognize God as the One that leads mankind out of bondage

One of the many things that Nehemiah, David, and Mrs. Eddy have in common is that they each recognized God as the source of all good! Nehemiah praised God for bringing Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees (a wealthy nation with a highly advanced culture, but where many different gods were worshipped) and for bringing the children of Israel out of Egypt. Each of these journeys was a form of liberation from oppression—the latter from physical oppression, the first from mental oppression. It is sometimes a little harder to recognize ease in matter as oppression. But, anything that points to matter (rather than God) as the source of good is oppressive. (B1 & B2) David recognized that God orders the “steps of a good man,” and saw plenty of examples of this in his own life. (B3) The question to ask ourselves is … what constitutes a “good man.” Hint: we’re not talking perfect mortal here. Think more in terms of qualities of the heart aligning with divine qualities. Now, along comes Mrs. Eddy many, many generations later. She compares the potential liberating power of Christian Science to the liberation of the children of Israel from the Egyptians. (S4) She clearly acknowledges God as the One deserving all credit and having all authority — stating that the very “starting point of divine Science is the fact that God is All-in-all, and there is no other might nor Mind.” (S3) She humbly speaks of the life of challenges that she experienced as part of being graciously prepared for her discovery of “the final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing.” (S1) And, she compassionately recognizes all that mankind today needs to be liberated from — “slavery of their own beliefs and from the educational systems of the Pharaohs …” (S2) Pharaohs today??? Notice, it is the “educational systems” she specifically speaks of. So … we need to ask ourselves what we’ve accepted because we’ve been taught it is true … whether it is about health, lack of opportunity, sexual or racial discrimination, limitations of personality, social pressures, etc. The list goes on and on. But, if a “law” is believed to be binding based of a human set of beliefs or customs, it must be questioned. God’s law is good. His promise of good is all that governs you. Trust God to order your steps, and lead you out of bondage and into freedom. Challenge anything else.

Section 2: Christian Science is part of God’s promise of deliverance to mankind

We see God’s promises of liberation and blessing to His people throughout the Bible. (B5) Mary Baker Eddy discovered that this promise is an element of a law of God, and so must continue for all time and include liberation from ALL claims of evil. Mrs. Eddy calls Christian Science a “scientific system of divine healing.” Putting together the definitions of system and scientific, we have a “a regular method or order producing certain knowledge or demonstration.” (Webster, 1828) Such a system has always existed. It was discovered as Mary Baker Eddy gained a spiritual sense of the Scriptures through her earnest and humble study of the Bible. She was literally being taught by the Comforter (the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised would be sent to continue the teachings he had started.) And, once she had discovered the principles, she set about demonstrating what she had learned — that the “miracles of Jesus” “illustrated an ever-operative divine Principle” that could be demonstrated as effectively today as it was in Bible times. (S6) So, step-by-step Mrs. Eddy discovered the fullness of this Science. First, the spiritual sense of things was revealed to her. Then, she reasoned through what she was learning. And, finally, she put it into practice by demonstrating the healing principles. (S7) As Christian Scientists, we have the privilege of going through those three steps, as well. Perceive what you read with spiritual sense, let the Comforter make it clear to you, and then have complete confidence that because Truth it true, it is demonstrable. Stick with it. Mrs. Eddy did!!!

Section 3: Exercise your Godliness — as Jesus did. Exercise God’s healing authority!

We only get part of what Paul had to say to Timothy in our Lesson. Think about it in context: “while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way,” (B8, NRSV) And, yet, in our world, we hear so much more about what we need to do with our body to be fit and well than what we need to do with our thought! That wasn’t Jesus’ model, and it shouldn’t be ours! What is Godliness? Strong’s includes the idea that it is “the gospel scheme.” I translate that to “living like Jesus lived.” One thing we know about Jesus is that he expressed his compassion by healing those needing healing. (B9) And he didn’t worry about what others would think. The ruler of the synagogue was incensed that on the SABBATH Jesus had healed the woman who had been bent over with sickness for 18 years! The ruler looked at healing as work … and work was forbidden on the Sabbath. Healing wasn’t work to Jesus. It was the natural outcome of expressing Love — expressing godliness. (B10) Jesus himself expected that healing would also be natural to “them that believe.” (B11) That’s us! Exercising our godliness will strengthen our ability to heal. Mrs. Eddy understood that. She wrote, “God will heal the sick through man, whenever man is governed by God.” (S8) Being governed by God is being Godly! Healing happens today according to the same Principle as in Jesus’ time. And it is vital that today’s healers embody the same humility and godliness expressed by Jesus. We’re given two “essential points of Christian Science” that have to be accepted as true: (1) Life nor man ever die; and (2) Sickness is not from God. (S9) If sickness were part of Truth (God) it couldn’t be destroyed. But, because sickness has nothing to do with Truth, it is naturally destroyed (like any other lie) when confronted by Truth. (S10) Man doesn’t heal — we don’t heal ourselves or others. Healing results from the action of the divine Principle, God — Life, Truth and Love! As thought yields to “‘God with us,’ — a divine influence ever present in human consciousness” the false evidence called “sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation.” (S11) To demonstrate is to “show the existence or truth of something by giving proof or evidence.” As we yield to the divine influence, disease gives up its false testimony and health is seen as evidence of God’s eternal presence and man’s godliness. This is the demonstration that is an essential and natural effect of understanding and adoring God! (S12)

Section 4: Repent! Keep thought focused on the true path.

Although more often than not people think about Christian Science in terms of its effectiveness in healing the sick, the textbook states that “the higher mission of the Christ-power [is] to take away the sins of the world.” (S17) Since sickness always stems from erroneous thought, healing has to start with correcting that thought. God is a great corrector!!! The word repent simply means … “to think differently.” (Strong’s Greek Lexicon ) When Jesus told the people, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” he may have been saying … “Hey! Change how you’re looking at things. The kingdom of Spirit and of harmony is here — right here, right now! So, stop being concerned with what appears to be — as you look through the distorted lens of material perception … and see what IS — health, harmony, Life and Love — right here, right now!” (B12, see also PS3 for Cobbey insights) So, what’s the sin that needs to be taken away? It is the misperception of reality — of the relation of God and man —and the effects of that misperception. It’s easy to see what others are doing wrong — as the scribes and Pharisees could so easily see the sin in the “woman taken in adultery.” (B13) It takes great humility to check our own thought to see if we are entertaining only love. Judging another for their “sinful” act is just as much a sin as the original act. None of us are humanly perfect. It’s not our job to condemn each other. Rather, by seeing each other as God’s children, we lift off the veil of sin (the belief that man is separate from God) in ourselves and others, allow the kingdom of heaven to be seen, and healing to take place — for ALL! The Golden Text is repeated and expanded on in citation B14. Peter’s assurance that the promise of redemption applied to everyone hearing him on that day of Pentecost applies equally to us and to future generations. (B14) The real promise is that we will find Christ — find the “real man and his relation to God.” The key is to realize that we are “linked by Science to [our] Maker,” and so we simply need to “turn from sin and lose sight of mortal selfhood to find Christ.” (S16) We ARE linked — united; connected. Sin always suggests separation, coming from an old archery term of missing the mark. But we really can’t miss a mark we are connected to! You know that when driving or riding a bike or even walking, that we tend to head wherever we’re looking. This winter I learned that to effectively ski through trees (which I do not even attempt to do) it is important to not look at the trees, but at the path between the trees. And, so with daily life. We’re told we need to “turn from sin.” So … we don’t want to keep the danger of sin or sickness (that which needs to be avoided) in front of thought — but the path of Christ, Truth — in order to safely navigate Life. People who ski in the trees love the adventure of it — but it took a lot of practice to learn to turn from the trees and find the path. We can ALL learn to love the adventure of navigating life — turning from the trees of sin (obstacles that pop up from believing we live a life separate from God) and navigating the path of Christ!

Section 5: Christian Science and the First Commandment

The scribe we are eavesdropping on here had overheard Jesus debating with other Jewish officials about theological questions regarding the concepts of resurrection and the afterlife. He was impressed by how coolly Jesus had handled the situation, and he agreed with his answers. So, he asks him now about what Jesus sees as the most important of all the Jewish laws (or commandments.) Jesus didn’t hesitate to respond with what we know as the First Commandment and then quickly identified the second great commandment, as well. To me, he is saying that the two can’t be separated. The scribe (more spiritually minded than Jesus’ other questioners) approves the answer. (B15) I find myself wondering what the others thought since they were likely still around to hear him respond. Maybe this scribe wanted to get a message through to the others. It doesn’t really matter. Obedience to the first commandment requires two elements. First, an acknowledgement that there is only ONE God. Second, complete and impartial love for this God — with whole heart, soul, mind and strength. That implies complete devotion, and no room in one’s heart for anything but love. Doesn’t this kind of thinking eliminate the possibility of competition, and instill a devotion to unity and love for all mankind? That was the message Paul sent to the Galatians. There is one God and one man — so all people everywhere are heirs of God (Good.) That is God’s promise. (B16) Mrs. Eddy identified the First Commandment as her favorite text. That’s saying a lot — as much as she loved her Bible! She says it “bases” — or constitutes the foundation for — the Science of being. Where there is ONE there is unity. With unity, there is no war (within families, between nations and even within a body.) All things are equal when they share a common source. And this one God never cursed man — thus freeing us from sin, suffering, punishment, and destruction. (S19) Surely, it would be worth our while to give more thought to what it really means to love the one God! Loving our neighbor (the second great commandment) just naturally follows love for God.

Section 6: “Christian Science and Christianity are one.” (S24)

This section has the first tenet at its core. (S20) What did Mrs. Eddy mean when she said we need to take the “inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life”? To me, it is an extension of how Jesus looked at the Hebrew Bible that he studied. As we’ve seen this week, Jesus often had a very different interpretation of the teachings of the Hebrew Bible than the Jewish leaders of his time. For example, he had a different interpretation of rules regarding the Sabbath and different thoughts on punishment of sin. It seems to me that Jesus took the “inspired Word” and tried to get others to view things from that perspective, as well. He brought freedom and salvation to the people of his time — and met with much persecution as a result. But, a record of his words and works continue to this day! That is part of the fulfillment of God’s promise that all may know Him and know how to love, praise, and abide with Him — and thus be blessed and saved from the errors of mortal sense. Jesus told his followers that although he would not be with them forever, God would send a Comforter that would abide with mankind forever. (B20) Such a Comforter would have to be more than a person. Christian Science is the knowledge of the saving presence and power of God. It (the Science which is available to be practiced by all) is the promised Comforter. (S22) It is important not to limit the vastness of Divine Science to the bounds of the denomination called Christian Science or to those striving to practice this Science. It is clear from Mrs. Eddy’s statement, “Christian Science and Christianity are one,” that it was her belief that what she discovered and named Christian Science was entirely based on the teachings and practice of Christ Jesus. (S24) This Comforter cannot be separated from genuine Christianity — full of love and good works. And, it must be the goal of every student of Christian Science to practice it from the basis of Love and unity with one God. God has promised deliverance for all of His people. Christian Science –the Science of Christ—provides the way–like Christ Jesus did—for that promise to be fulfilled.


[Warren’s PS1 Cobbey Crisler on citation B10, Luke 13.11-16: Jesus heals a bent-over woman:
“Verses 10 through 17 are a healing found only in Luke.
(Verse 11) A woman with a spinal difficulty is in a synagogue Notice that Luke doesn’t say she has an infirmity. Luke, who is reputed to be a physician, doesn’t even diagnose it as an infirmity, but as a “spirit of an infirmity,” a concept, a spirit, a thought. “She was bowed together. She couldn’t lift up herself.”

Verse 12. Jesus comes and announces to womanhood something that could be applicable in many ways, not just this one time. “Woman, you are free from your infirmity. Verse 13. “She’s made straight and glorifies God.”

Verse 14. Incredible, “the ruler of the synagogue” in which this grand healing and correction of a human problem occurred “answered with indignation”.

Jesus’ explanation about the cause of disease is in Verse 16. No longer should there be any room in Christian thought that disease stems from thought or is God’s will when Jesus attributes it to anything that would oppose God. Only what would oppose God would impose something on man that God Himself never created in His whole man. Is that a new theology? Satan and disease linked, and not God as the cause of loss, or pain, or sickness?

Because if it is, he defines Satan as a liar as Jesus does in John (8:44). Satan has bound this woman with an infirmity that has her bent over, and has accomplished this for eighteen years. (Luke 13:16) And “Satan is a liar and the father of it.” Satan’s work must be lies as well. If they are they can be corrected mentally, by a full recognition of what is true. Notice that Satan does the binding. Jesus said (John 8:32) “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

It’s a contest between the truth and the lie about God and His theology, about man, about woman, about children and about disease. If Satan is a liar, he will never change his character. Our idea of God may have gone haywire, but God has not moved.”

[Warren’s PS2, Cobbey Crisler on citation B13, John 8.3-11, Jesus saves woman taken in adultery:
“John 8:3 Suddenly here is “a woman taken in adultery.” One should at least ask the question, where is the husband who would usually make the charge, and where is the fellow she was with? How come only the woman is here?

The event takes place in the area of the temple. If the stones suddenly start flying, both Jesus and the woman were there. Who did they really care about eliminating?

John 8:5 They face him with a rabbinical question. “Moses said that this lady should be stoned. What do you say?...

John 8:6, While they’re all saying this, Jesus has disappeared from view, which would actually happen to those in the rear rows if they’ve encircled. You have to look around. Where did he go? He just disappeared. He’s writing on the ground. A record about as evanescent as the material in which he’s writing. Is that the permanent record of womanhood? It’s a dust record. A dust record that can be dominated by the first foot that walks over and decides to change it or trample it.

John 8:7, “They keep asking him,” because he’s doing nothing but writing on the ground. This is a brilliant way to control a mob. It was a method that was successful. He has kept the mob from being an unthinking gang. He’s kept them all as individuals because they’re thinking, “What’s he doing? What’s he doing?”

“So they continue asking.” He says “He that is ‘anamartetos’, that is, above error, who never erred or who cannot error sin among you, let him first throw a stone.” He hasn’t objected to Moses’ sentence. He hasn’t set himself apart. He simply returned the sentence to everyone’s individual conscience and let it be established in the mental courtrooms of those present. You can’t have a mob scene when conscience is at work individually. That’s what destroys a mob.

John 8:8, “Again he stoops down and writes on the ground,” giving them a chance for it to work. It’s an impersonal treatment of the situation for all concerned. No condemnation. No anything.

John 8:9, What happened? “They filtered out and they began at the eldest.” This is a significant start. The custom in the Sanhedrin… was that after a decision of any major import was made, the youngest left first. The honor was for the eldest to be the last one you saw.

Not in this case. The eldest were the first you saw leaving. This is not surprising when you think since they had been around longer, they likely had accumulated more sin. So, the eldest left first. “The woman is left standing in the midst.”

John 8:10, What is Jesus going to do? Is he for permissiveness? He said, “Woman” again, “womanhood”, “Where are your accusers? No man hath condemned you?”

John 8:11, “I’m not in that business either. But, and you can imagine the authority that went behind this, “go, and sin no more.” Terminate that link to the flesh.”

[Warren’s PS3 Cobbey Crisler on citations B12 & B14, Matt. 4.17 & Acts 2.30… Repent to receive the Holy Ghost:

“And Peter says the very first words Jesus said in his public ministry, according to at least one gospel (B12, Matthew 4:17), and that is the word “repent.” And that word “repent” which turns most of us off in this room, and probably most of the world off, in its original is an exciting concept and absolute a pre-requisite before we can even unite with the church that the Book of Acts is talking about.

“Repent” in Greek, coming from the – well the noun is “metanoia” m-e-t-a-n-o-i-a, metanoia, meaning to change your concept about things. Change your mind about things. Change you concept about things.

Now, that is the call of the church; it was the call of Jesus to his first listeners. Change your concept; that’s all that’s needed to get totally different results. The Christ summons humanity to change its concept it’s been adhering to all along – the atrophy. Because the Holy Ghost is moving through these changed concepts, and separating the old out from the new.

And when this happens, all this scriptural exegesis, the walk to Emmaus and the changing of concept, verse 41 shows that “three thousand new members joined the church.” (See below, Paraphrased)

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Now we talk about what is needed to get members in our church. The ingredients better be there; it’s the Holy Ghost pattern. Peter didn’t invent all that, and it was the result of the church praying “with one accord” to come out with the Holy Ghost. There’s no obstacle to the Holy Ghost.

Getting our church up to the highest possible platform with nothing standing between it and the Holy Ghost – and that’s moving -- both in thought and action.

Look what occurs as a result of it. In Acts 2, verse 43: “Many wonders and signs are now done by all of the apostles.” (See below, Paraphrased)

Acts 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

They’re healing everywhere! Not just understanding the Bible, but healing, but it looks like our comprehension of the Bible is essential to it, and both come from the Holy Ghost – both prophecy and understanding the scriptures, the key to the scriptures comes from the Holy Ghost, and no lesser source.

They, in verse 46, again with a familiar phrase, do what? (Murmurs) With one accord in the temple…one accord.” (See below)

Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

That’s the secret! But instead we opt for the easier alternative. If it isn’t working out “in one accord,” we leave early. (See above) (Laughter)

But, sticking it out on that high level, knowing that nothing can interfere between you and the Holy Ghost, you, collectively -- that movement occurs and things happen that we never dreamed were possible.

And even Peter had to reach back into prophecy to explain what was going on because God had notified his people that this thing was possible collectively. And Acts 2, verse 47 ends: “The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

[Warren’s PS4, Cobbey Crisler on citation B20, John 14.16-17, Jesus prophesies the Comforter:
“There are greater works, the ultimatum of the application of what Jesus had introduced to earth. So, when he’s talking about greater works being done, through what agency will these greater works come? We find the Comforter is introduced.
John 14:16, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter.”

We should know enough about prophesy and have enough respect to realize that most of the prophets in the Bible, including Jesus, had a tremendous regard for prophesy. They knew that it had come from God, not from man. Similarly, we should know how to recognize the Comforter when the Comforter arrives… The word “comforter” is parakletos, sometimes called paraclete… translated “comforter” given by our King James Version. You will find, however, that The New English Bible does not use “comforter.” It uses “advocate.” You’ll also find that I John uses parakletos and the King James translator of that uses “advocate.”

We should know that the word “advocate” is a technical word legally. It specifically means “defense attorney.” That has a lot of implications to it. By contrast the name “Satan” in Hebrew is a technical term for “prosecuting attorney.” There you have the battle joined in thought.

The Comforter is to come and defend man. We can see all the ways that Jesus had introduced various defenses for man…
John 14:16, “that he may abide with you for ever.” Is there a provision for a third revelation? The Comforter is apparently the final one.

John 14:17, “the Spirit of Truth.” Notice how that counters Jesus’ definition of the “devil.” What did he say about the truth? It was the recipe for freedom (John 3:8). So, it’s got something to do with that. But there is also a communications problem. The world “cannot receive.” It’s not going to be a popular arrival. “It doesn’t see him or know him.”

But, we will know, “because it’s within.”

John 14:26 picks up the description. “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost.” There’s another part of the list, identified with the Holy Ghost in Luke 3:22, the dove descending is the symbol of it. The words “dove” and “ghost” are feminine in the Greek, and the comfort aspect also introduces the feminine concept.

The role of the Comforter “will be sent by God in my name.” If one were to regard that literally, the Comforter’s name should at least have some recognizable aspect either relating to Jesus or to Christ. Another aspect of the Comforter is “he will teach you all things.”

The role of teaching what? Is anything left out? “All things.” And at the same time, “it will bring everything back to human memory that Jesus said.”
