God the Preserver of Man”

PSST Subject: How wonderful to be gifted with three lessons in a row that tackle our origin, the continuity and infinity of that origin, and then how that origin is factual for the whole world! Last week’s lesson on God being the only cause and creator was so wonderful and for that lesson to be followed by one about how that creation is preserved and that perfection maintained is such a treat! Ask your students if they’ve noticed the relation of these three lessons. Maybe they have an insight to why Mary Baker Eddy may have ordered the Subjects the way she did!

PSST Golden Text: “Fear not…” Why? Because God is with us! He has promised that he will strengthen us, help us, and will uphold us! What are some promises we know about being safe in God’s care? What does it mean to not fear? Is saying that we are not afraid enough; or does affirming why we are not afraid solidify that there truly cannot be any fear present in our experience? In the golden text of this week’s lesson, we are given a command not to fear! But we are not only given this command, but a list of reasons why we don’t need to fear and how God will support the obedience of this command. Check out hymn number 149. Perhaps ask your students what it means to trust God and His promises? Especially those excluding fear.

PSST Responsive Reading: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want…” Why? Because God is with us! How wonderful to know that our home is the presence of God, the tender, loving Shepherd! What are some times that the loving Shepherd hand has guided you? Does any line in particular have specific significance to anyone in your Sunday School class? Why? Why do they think that the 23rd Psalm closes the way that it does? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to affirm daily that we “dwell in the house of the Lord for ever”? What are some promises we see throughout the 23rd Psalm?

PSST Section 1: “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?” Psalms 139: 7 is essentially asking if we can ever be separate from God… No! and why? Because in any place “shall (God’s) hand lead me, and (God’s) right hand shall hold me” Psalms 139: 10 (B2). Can we ever be outside of God’s care? What does the infinitude of God mean to you? What does Mrs. Eddy say about the allness of God? How has divine Love met our needs? What is the importance of the always and every in her statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures on page 494 (SH6)? Perhaps you have some favorite citations from her writings that connect to this allness that we are embraced in throughout this lesson. Perhaps your students do too! You can switch out any synonym of God or really any quality you truly appreciate witnessing and ask yourself, “can I ever truly be separate from this when this is God and God is All-in-all?

PSST Section 2: Did David need armor, and a helmet, and a coat of mail in order to defeat Goliath? No! and why? Because David knew that “the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s…” 1 Samuel 17:47 (B7). Why didn’t David think he needed the materials that Saul armed him with? How was David’s trust in God’s protection proof of his understanding that God is all? Have you had any experiences that show you how God’s protection and allness has been clearer than any illusion of danger, pain, sorrow? What happens when one person devotes thought and action to the fact that God is All-in-all? How does this bless everyone? Where can we find “security for the claims of harmonious and eternal being (SH12).

PSST Section 3: How can we know that the origin of ALL – man and beasts (B12) – is infinitely intact and preserved with excellence? Because God is infinite and God is with us ALL!! Always and in all ways! What is our inheritance as the children of God? What did Jesus understand which enabled him to be victorious over human difficulties? How is man’s extremity, God’s opportunity (Science and Health page 266)? What do we know that empowers us to heal disease, overcome sin, and vanquish death? We have at our fingertips the truth about God as the loving Father of man. How can we make known our Father’s loving care for His creation? How can we testify that not a sparrow falls to the ground without our Father? How are we equipped to deny all manner of evil, whether sin, disease, or death, and so destroy evil’s false claims?

PSST Section 4: How was the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years healed? What did she realize? God was there! She felt the Christ within her. Her faith in Him made her whole! When we learn that we are sustained by Spirit rather than matter, what happens? Everyone witnessed this faith and sustenance! How are we demonstrating Spirit’s sustenance daily? How do we demonstrate, “with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being” (SH 25)?

PSST Section 5: Was Paul alarmed when Eutychus fell from the third story window in this section’s story? No! and why not? Because his understanding of the allness of God embraced Eutychus and Paul knew that God’s life was in him (B19). Why do you think that perfect Love casteth out fear? What is this perfect Love? Is it God’s love or human love? Have you ever experienced this perfect Love and how has it cast out fear? How have you witnessed that fear and Love can never coexist? What is the importance of the phrase “be not afraid”? When do we use this phrase and how have we seen it’s effect?

PSST Section 6:If God be for us, who can be against us” (B21)? Replace God with his synonyms! Can anyone be against these synonyms? Have you ever felt separate from God? What helped you come to the realization that the relationship was intact? How can you help a friend who seems to be struggling with this question of unity? How can we overcome sin, danger, persecution, lack, distress, tribulation? Who do we know from the Bible or perhaps not from the Bible who has overcome such things? How can we remember and constantly demonstrate that God and man are one and there can be no interference with that fact?

Much love!
