PSST - PSST: Daily become more of a spiritual seer!

[PSST: Daily become more of a spiritual seer!]
Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on

“Christ Jesus”
for December 24, 2017

PSST Golden Text - What is prophecy, and why is it so important? What is Jesus’ “testimony,” and how are Jesus’ works the “spirit of prophecy”?

PSST Responsive Reading - How did Simeon and Anna know that the babe was the Lord’s Christ? What do you think was special about this particular babe? In an age that celebrates the Christmas holiday with sales on gifts and the spending of money, what are we truly rejoicing evermore about?

What does “despise” mean in this setting? Consider looking it up on Blue Letter Bible for it must mean more than the simple modern meaning of strong dislike. Why should we be sure not to despise prophecy?

PSST Section 1 - Moses’ prophecy from Deuteronomy states that God will raise up a Prophet like him (Moses). How is Jesus like Moses? What similarities can you find? Why is it important to understand that Jesus’ birth and triumph were prophesied?

What do your students see in Joseph? What could (and some would say should) he have done, finding his wife with child while they were engaged? Why didn’t he? What qualities does Joseph express that we should be bringing into our lives?
What about Mary? What must her first thoughts have been when she was visited by the angel? Why was she able to receive the Christ idea and bring it to fruition? What was true about her thought and what do we want to emulate from Mary’s expression of goodness?

PSST Section 2 - What is true about Bethlehem? How does the smallness of Bethlehem relate to God’s relationship to mankind throughout the Bible? What does Jesus say about the first and last? Why is it so appropriate that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and in a stable, no less? What does this teach us about God’s relationship to us? What can we learn about our approach to life and those around us as we read this story again?

PSST Section 3 - What is the great light that we have all seen? What is the seeming darkness that we find ourselves walking in from time to time? How do we get more light when it seems like the darkness is so oppressive?

Who visits Jesus at his birth? Kings? Why were these kings visiting this unknown baby in an obscure manger? If you read a little outside the lesson this week, you’ll see that Herod has a particular request of the Kings; do they listen to his request? Why or why not? What does that teach us about the Christ idea in every age? How must we respond to the Christ messages that come to us daily?

PSST Section 4 - Why did the angels appear to shepherds? What qualities do shepherds express that we should be mindful of? What about sheep - what qualities do they express that we can learn from? Who is the chief Shepherd? How does he give us a crown that doesn’t fade? What does this mean? Why is morning so important? How should we be starting our mornings - and how does this help us to hold on to the crown that our true Shepherd continually gives to us?

PSST Section 5 - What is Jesus’ true origin and purpose? Was he afraid to share it with the world? How does his own hometown of Nazareth receive him when he claims to be the fulfillment of prophecy? How does that relate to our own experience? Do we ever think about claiming our true origin - and are we ever hesitant to do so? If so, why are we? If we hear someone else claiming their true heritage as God’s child/idea, do we resist that or support them? Why? How can we do more to see the Christ idea everywhere and not resist or hesitate to welcome it into our experience, no matter where it seems to be coming from?

PSST Section 6 - What is true about human vision? How malleable is it? How fallible is it? What is true about spiritual vision? How infallible is seeing spiritually? What does this teach us about the importance of prophecy? Can we become spiritual seers? How? Why is it important that we do this, not just for ourselves, but for the world?
