Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?”

Let’s face it, it is a pretty hard sell in today’s world to ask people to believe that this topic could even be considered as a question, “Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?”. After all, the vast majority of humanity firmly believe that sin, disease, and death are not only real, but an undeniable reality. They might answer, “Of course, I see all three around me every day.” To ask the question about their actual reality seems almost ludicrous. But personally, I am very happy that the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, included this as one of our Bible Lesson Subjects. Why? Well to be honest I think it is vitally important that there be at least one source in the world’s vast supply of information that takes the Bible as the best source of information regarding life and health. Read and study the Bible and you are going to find individuals from Old Testament to New that made it their life purpose to show that all claims of sin, disease, and death are not the final word, or might we say, not the final “Word.” When investigated with a spiritual perspective not only can these claims be healed, but also, through anunderstanding of God’s Truth, they can authoritatively be shown as no part of God’s reality.

We begin with a statement from the Prophet Jeremiah, which is our Golden Text this week.

Jeremiah 30:17 “…I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord;”

And according to The Message (MSG): “As for you, I’ll come with healing, curing the incurable.”

This statement by Jeremiah, who is considered as a major prophet in Judaism, seems to make a firm place for God as being clearly involved in our health care system.

Responsive Reading: Habakkuk 1:12, 13 and Psalms 103: 2-6; 42:8, 11. The imagery of God as the source of health and healing continues in the Responsive Reading where we read, “Bless the Lord…who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases. Who redeemeththy life from destruction (death)…so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Although translated as eagle in English bibles, the Hebrew word is “nesher,” which probably refers to the Griffon Vulture. This vulture is one of the most long-lived birds.)

(Our Executive Director of CedarS, Warren Huff, shares PS #1 with insights from Bible Scholar, Cobbey Crisler, on these citations. See at end of the Met.)

Section 1: What God makes is “real.”

This section makes a good case for the fact that what God makes is good and only good. B3, James 3:11, “Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?”

As the following citations clearly state, S3 | SH 230:15 15 “Good is not, cannot be, the author of experimental sins. God, good, can no more produce sickness than goodness can cause evil and health occasion disease.”

Have you ever heard someone speak of an illness leading to death as “God’s will?” Throughout this Bible Lesson you will read how this false belief has no basis in the Bible or in God’s reality. Our textbook agrees with the Bible stance as stated in the following citation,

S4 | SH 206:26–28, 30 “Instead of God sending sickness and death, He destroys them, and brings to light immortality…God does not cause man to sin, to be sick, or to die.”

Does Christian Science just blindly deny what is an obvious reality to many people, that being, the reality of disease which sometimes leads to death? In 1928 the following statement appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel. I find it as a simple, straightforward reply to those who struggle with what Christian Science teaches about sin, disease, and death.

“Christian Science clearly recognizes the presence of disease as a factor to be dealt with in human experience. It is true that it teaches that disease is not real, in the sense that God has not made it. Jesus did the same: the man with the withered hand had it restored whole as the other; the blind man saw; Lazarus arose from the grave—all because disease was unreal, untrue in the sight of God. Contending in this manner for the unreality of disease is very different from attempting to heal by an unintelligent, willful denial of the existence of disease. It is not uncommon for reputable physicians, finding that they are unable to give their tuberculosis patients, among others, further help, to recommend Christian Science, often with the result that such patients receive permanent healing. I feel that I can speak with some measure of authority, as a member of my immediate family was permanently healed of tuberculosis by Christian Science treatment.”( Frank C. Ayres, Committee on Publication for the State of Indiana, in the Anderson Herald, from the May 19, 1928 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel)

(See Waren’s PS #2 for an interesting take from Cobbey on citation B5, Psalms 107: 15, 20)

Section 2: The unity of Good is God’s expression of only Good.

This section establishes another key element of the Christian Science perspective regarding sin, disease, and death. Perhaps we could call it the “entireness” of Good. In the following citations we find that expressed.

S7 | SH 539:8–12 “What can be the standard of good, of Spirit, of Life, or of Truth, if they produce their opposites, such as evil, matter, error, and death? God could never impart an element of evil, and man possesses nothing which he has not derived from God.”

S10 | SH 356:17 “There is neither a present nor an eternal copartnership between error and Truth, between flesh and Spirit. God is as incapable of producing sin, sickness, and death as He is of experiencing these errors. How then is it possible for Him to create man subject to this triad of errors, — man who is made in the divine likeness?”

At this point in our reading Johann pointed out, “Then this way of looking at things would be different than the concept of yin and yang.” I agreed! (In Chinese philosophy “yin and yang”, dark-bright, describe how opposite or contrary forces may be interconnected or complementary.)

In the Science of Christianity we learn that the oneness, the unity, the entireness of Good is the basis of reality. There are some interesting points in the following article from the Journal.

REALITY VERSUS DUALITY by B. S. From the December 1889 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“A thought of reversion comes to me so forcibly in these four words; take a card, write on it the words "live" and "lived;" hold it before a mirror, and the reflection you see in it reads "evil" and "devil." Does it not seem a strange coincidence that "live" should spell "evil" backwards? In the one we have the real, in the other the unreal. It comes to me like working out a problem on a scientific basis or principle—why evil can't live. "Christianity teaches nothing but what is perfectly coincident with the ruling principles of a virtuous man."

“The idea of a personal devil as the opponent of God has long prevailed in the human mind and God was a composite idea of personality before which they bowed. Evil is the opposite of Good, or the suppositional absence of Good. All the loving Father makes is good; and nothing else has power.

“In the June issue of the Journal are found these words: "To our appreciation no wiser words were ever spoken than those of our Teacher: 'All human action is a choice between the lesser of two evils.' In mortal sense we are walking on shifting sands; the panorama of this apparent life is like that offered by a cloudy sky, with no more permanence or durability. Our work—our only work—is to establish and maintain the sense of the reality of Being."…

“God is Life; and this duality of Good and Evil is contrary to Reality. It exists only in a false consciousness, or knowledge of what it is to "live" or have lived; is a sense of life in flesh and matter; both good and evil. "All is Mind and Mind's Idea."

Section 3: Sin forgiven through God given dominion.

Have you ever felt down in the world? Did you yearn for someone on your side, a supporter, an advocate just for you?

B10 | I John 2:1 1 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”

A note in the CS Publishing Society’s My Bible Lesson shares, “The word “advocate” comes from the Greek word parakletos, which also translates to “comforter.” An advocate stays beside and defends you in a time of trial.” You have an advocate by your side!

In citation B12, Matthew 9: 2-8, Jesus greeted a paralyzed man, “Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.” Jesus knew what the man needed. Don’t we all need hope and encouragement when we are feeling down? Jesus also discerned the critical and judgemental thoughts of the scribes, not only were they angered at Jesus’ presumptuous claim that the palsied man sins were forgiven, but also their judgements could have weighed heavily on this man. But Jesus lifted him up. All to the chagrin of the scribes, “This man blasphemeth!” But still Jesus persisted and the palsied man rose and walked.

(See W’s PS#3 for B12, Matt. 9:2-8 from Cobbey Crisler on healing with “good cheer & forgiveness:”)

S15 | SH 474:16 “If sin, sickness, and death are as real as Life, Truth, and Love, then they must all be from the same source; God must be their author. Now Jesus came to destroy sin, sickness, and death; yet the Scriptures aver, “I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” Is it possible, then, to believe that the evils which Jesus lived to destroy are real or the offspring of the divine will?”

Many of us have found great encouragement, advocacy for our own progress in these words from Science and Health, S16 | SH 476:32–4 “Jesus beheld in Science the per- fect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Savioursaw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.”

Section 4: The Christ breaking Satan’s bonds.

In this section the instruction is present as to how we deal with our adversaries: sin, sickness, and death. Do it quickly. Don’t put off any problem. Don’t allow it to go on and on. I sometimes like to think of our work as Christian healers like skilled knights, or Ninja warriors. We equip ourselves through prayer, sharpen our weapons, and then as we enter into our day we wield our Swords of Truth to cut down all evil suggestions right and left. Since I often watch films with my kids I have the joy of discovering or rediscovering inspiring images in films I would not have necessarily watched if it wasn’t for them. For example, recently I watched the original Disney Sleeping Beauty with Martha. I thoroughly enjoyed when Prince Phillip supplied with the Sword of Truth and Shield of Virtue hacked his way through the thorns and eventually slew the evil dragon. Now that’s the way to deal with an adversary!

B13 | Matthew 5:25 25 “Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.”

S21 | SH 390:18–29 18 “Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him.” Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin. You have no law of His to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick. “Agree to disagree” with approaching symptoms of chronic or acute disease, whether it is cancer, consumption, or smallpox”.

B22 | 393:12 “Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man.”

(You will thoroughly enjoy checking out Cobbey's insights in W's PS #4 Dealing with our Adversary and PS #5 Jesus’ healing of the bent over woman at the end of the Met!)

Section 5: Seeing through death at Joppa, Peter raises Tabitha.

Many of us are familiar with Jesus’ statement, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” KJV

Here is the version from the Amplified Bible, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, if anyone keeps My word [by living in accordance with My message] he will indeed never, ever see and experience death.”

I love it when someone takes the Master at his Word. You know, simply follows, listens, and lives in accordance with instructions from the Master.

For example,as related in this week’s lesson, B18, the Apostle Peter got a call to go immediately to Joppa. We read in Acts of the Apostles that a disciple named Tabitha was sick and died. Peter was called, came, and raised Tabitha from the dead. It was a wonderful event, but was it incredible (unbelievable)? (See W's PS #6 for more Cobbey insights!)

There was a time when followers of Christ Jesus did not think it incredible, as when the Apostle Paul said to King Agrippa, “Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?” Acts 26: 8.

Another individual who accepted our Master at his word, was Mary Baker Eddy. She writes in citation,

S26 | SH426:16–28 “ When it is learned that disease cannot destroy life, and that mortals are not saved from sin or sickness by death, this understanding will quicken into newness of life. It will master either a desire to die or a dread of the grave, and thus destroy the great fear that besets mortal existence. The relinquishment of all faith in death and also of the fear of its sting would raise the standard of health and morals far beyond its present elevation, and would enable us to hold the banner of Christianity aloft with unflinching faith in God, in Life eternal.”

There are those that have continued to follow the Master and take him at his Word, for example. The story of Joseph Mann was published in the Boston Sunday Globe, November 21, 1886 and republished in the Christian Science Journal of 1887,

“Puzzling the Doctors, A Strange Story of How A Christian Scientist Cured A Wounded Man

“Hartford, Conn., Nov. 20.—R. C. Hannon, a Boston Christian Scientist, has secured many converts in the neighboring town of Broad Brook, where a remarkable case of faith-cure is reported. A week ago, Joseph Mann was accidentally shot by his brother-in-law, the bullet entering the left breast, and coming out at the back directly opposite.

He was attended by three doctors, who, after examination, pronounced the case fatal. The patient was unconscious, and bleeding profusely. Hannon, being in the town, asked permission to try "the Christian Science."

On his (Mr. Hannon) entering the room, the wounded man immediately returned to consciousness, and sat up in bed. In an hour he appeared as well as ever. The wounds healed rapidly, and today the healer and his patient were in this city. The latter says he feels no pain. He is a little pale from excessive loss of blood, otherwise he is perfectly well.

Hannon says, the Bible is authority for the faith-cure, and nobody need to die. The doctors are puzzled, and claim that the ball hit a rib, and followed the bone to the back. The excessive flow of blood, however, would indicate that the bullet passed through the lung and other organs.—Boston Sunday Globe, Nov. 21st.

Mr. R. C. Hannon was for several years a sufferer from cancer in the stomach, which physicians failed to cure. Mrs. F. J. Stetson healed him in two treatments in Christian Science, and gave him a course of instruction, and bade him, "Go into the world, preach the gospel, heal the sick."

Section 6: Rejoice, for we are subject to the divine powers.

When we know that God has all the power, isn’t it time to start rejoicing? For example, my Dad’s first major healing was of a broken leg. Shortly before lunch one work day he had fallen through an old wooden porch. A co-worker helped him get home. My mom asked if he would like her to call Aunt Benny to pray for him. She was the local Christian Science practitioner. He agreed. After about two hours Dad felt he was ready to go back to work. He commented to my mom, “Well I guess I was mistaken. It must not have been broken. Because you sure can’t heal a broken leg in two hours!” My mom did not say a word.

A couple years later my dad was going through the Army induction process. At one point the examining doctor remarked, “Well man, I see you have had a broken leg, but it has healed beautifully and is probably stronger than it was before.” In amazement Dad realized he had been healed. As he prepared to head across the Pacific on a troop ship he realized he wanted to read Science and Health. And that is exactly what he did.

We read in citation, B22 | Revelation 21:3 3 “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

(See Warren’s PS #7 Cobbey Crisler’s comments on B22, Revelation.)

When we are healed or healing we see health restored on the basis of Spirit’s supremacy.

In Science and Health we read, S28 | SH 480:2–5, 29–32 “Where the spirit of God is, and there is no place where God is not, evil becomes nothing, — the opposite of the something of Spirit…. If sin, sickness, and death were understood as nothingness, they would disappear. As vapor melts before the reality of good.”

There is nothing quite like glorious Son-shine to reveal God’s allness and the absolute nothingness of sin, disease, and death!

[Warren’s (W’s) PS#1 for Responsive Reading, Psalms 103:2-6 from—Cobbey Crisler:
“We're all covered by insurance policies, perhaps life and health insurance. The Canadian spelling is probably better, "assurance" as far as biblical therapy is concerned. If you've ever wanted to know what benefits we have, Psalm 103 lists them: Verse 2, "Forget not all his benefits." We have "Forgive us iniquities," that's sin removed from man. "Disease," all of them, Verse 3. Removed from man's experience and nature.” Verse 4, “Redeemeth thy life from destruction,” death no longer the arbiter of man’s potential and capability. Those are the benefits. They’re not only individual; they’re collective because verse 6 says, “The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.”

[W’s PS#2 for B5, Psalms 107:15,20 from CobbeyCrisler, “paying your bill by giving praise”

[“I'm going to give you an assignment in Psalm 107 because it's a very rewarding one to work with. In the first 22 verses, for example, when you are studying this independently at home, work out the steps that are being given us, the symptoms, the appointment with the Great Physician, the treatment, the complete remedy, and then paying your bill. That happens to be a refrain, "Pay your bill. Pay your bill." In this particular Psalm, in Verse 8, [and Verses 15, 21, 31] "Oh that [men] would praise the LORD [for] his goodness, and [for] his wonderful works to the children of men!" Follow that all the way through and you'll find three different sets of prescriptions and treatments that can be quite relevant to our own experience.”

… The appointment with the Great Physician and then, of course, when you're in front of the Physician, that's face-to-face, seeing God's face, get the treatment, let His face shine upon thee, then the remedy, go out and have the prescription filled. The remedy solves the whole problem, then pay your bill. Follow that through and see what comes.”

Leaves of the Tree: Prescriptions from Psalms, by B. Cobbey Crisler]

[W’s PS#3 for B12, Matt. 9:2-8 from Cobbey Crisler on healing with “good cheer &forgiveness:”
“Verse 2, Chapter 9: ‘We have a man in bed with the palsy.” Can you imagine Jesus going by a man who had been that long without moving and telling him to “be of good cheer”? But there’s nothing Jesus said that he didn’t discern was needed. What that man needed, more than physical movement, was to be of good cheer. Jesus said, “Thy sins be forgiven thee.” Jesus knew at a glance the whole history of a case.”
(Verse 3). The scribes say, “This man blasphemes.” In order to get the healing, he has to eliminate the theological obstruction to healing first.
(Verse 5). He says, “What is easier? To say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?”
(Verse 6). “Because the Son of man does have power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy), “Arise, take up thy bed, and he goes.”
Book of Matthew, Auditing the Master: A Tax Collector’s Report, by B. Cobbey Crisler]

[W’s PS#4 for B13 Matt. 5:25 from Cobbey Crisler:
“(Verse 25). "Agree with your adversary quickly, while he is in the way with 'us." Solve the problem when it confronts you. Don't put it off. Ionce heard a lecturer describe

old age in a novel way. He decided that old age might just be an accumulation of unsolved problems: Problemswhich we’d put off.”

Book of Matthew, Auditing the Master: A Tax Collector’s Report, by B. Cobbey Crisler]

[W’s PS#5 for B16, Luke 13:11-17 fromCobbey Crisler.

Jesus heals bent-over woman:
“Verses 10 through 17 are a healing found only in Luke.
(Verse 11) A woman with a spinal difficulty is in a synagogue. Notice that Luke doesn’t say she has an infirmity. Luke, who is reputed to be a physician, doesn’t even diagnose it as an infirmity, but as a “spirit of an infirmity,” a concept, a spirit, a thought. “She was bowed together. She couldn’t lift up herself.”
Verse 12. Jesus comes and announces to womanhood something that could be applicable in many ways, not just this one time. “Woman, you are free from your infirmity. Verse 13. “She’s made straight and glorifies God.”
Verse 14. Incredible, “the ruler of the synagogue” in which this grand healing and correction of a human problem occurred “answered with indignation”.
Jesus’ explanation about the cause of disease is in Verse 16. No longer should there be any room in Christian thought that disease stems from thought or is God’s will when Jesus attributes it to anything that would oppose God. Only what would oppose God would impose something on man that God Himself never created in His whole man. Is that a new theology? Satan and disease linked, and not God as the cause of loss, or pain, or sickness?
Because if it is, he defines Satan as a liar as Jesus does in John (8:44). Satan has bound this woman with an infirmity that has her bent over, and has accomplished this for eighteen years. (Luke 13:16) And “Satan is a liar and the father of it.” Satan’s work must be lies as well. If they are they can be corrected mentally, by a full recognition of what is true. Notice that Satan does the binding. Jesus said (John 8:32) “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
It’s a contest between the truth and the lie about God and His theology, about man, about woman, about children and about disease. If Satan is a liar, he will never change his character. Our idea of God may have gone haywire, but God has not moved.”
“Book of Luke: Luke the Researcher” by B. CobbeyCrisler ]

[W’s PS#6 for B18, Acts 9: 36-42—Cobbey Crisleron Peter raising Tabitha.

“It didn’t take long for the news to get around that this kind of healing work [of Peter making Aeneas instantly whole, Acts 9:34] was being accomplished by the early Christians. In a neighboring town of Joppa we find a woman named Tabitha. She had had an exemplary life, done much good for many. Peter comes right away. We are told that Peter went with those who came to get him. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. Do you recall back in the narratives of the gospel where a similar situation occurred, and Peter was there? It was the raising of Jairus’ daughter. In Acts 9:40-42 Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive. And it was known through out all Joppa;”

Do you remember when Jesus came into that environment that you could almost cut it into square blocks of moisture, the grief was so thick? There were paid mourners at that point. As a matter of fact, we are told that even the poorest individual was entitled to at least three instruments at the funeral service. You can imagine Jairus, being a ruler of the Synagogue, the extent of noise, and activity, and mourning that must have occurred at the passing of Jairus’ daughter.”

.

[W’s PS#7 for B22, Revelation 21: 3,4, from CobbeyCrisler: “no tears in the Holy City”

“Revelation 21 and 22. We’ve already been over it, haven’t we? We’ve seen it in previous Scripture but we find that it is the chosen Scriptural summary, the peak, the ultimate, and Jesus is associated with it. How much purer could Scripture be, coming from God through Jesus to John to us? And John saw that “new heaven and new earth” [Revelation 21:1]. …
John saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem. We know its origin, coming from God prepared as a bride. Finally, the bride prepared, adorned for her husband. [Verse 2] The tabernacle of God with men, [Revelation 21] Verse 3.
“Verse 4, there is a check-off list in this Holy City. There’s no more tears, no more salty reminders of the sea in our bodies chemically. We’ve been told there’s “no more sea” in Verse 1. No more sea, no more tears, no more death, no sorrow, crying or pain, not in this consciousness. It’s the Holy City. That also means that it’s whole. There’s nothing that can fragment it. The tribes embrace it at the gates. The restored and regenerated tribes. The collective idea of you and me working together as chords under the divine principle of a grand music that fills the universe and all eternity….”
