Are you looking for a little immortality in your life? How about a drink from the fountain of youth? Spanish explorers sought this fountain near my home in the 1500s. What about a blast from an experimental chamber like a comic-book hero zapped into immortality and indestructibility? Or maybe a magical elixir or medical procedure promising to maintain an eternal physical existence? Lots of movies graphically portray this scenario. And less inspiring tales tell of an immortality that accompanies a dark, death-filled existence preying on others.

Maybe it is time to take the mystery out of immortality—and to give a Bible-based, holy path to claim immortality as a spiritual fact of God’s creation. That’s right, a guaranteed, God-given approach to claiming your divine rights to immortality as outlined and demonstrated in the Bible. This week’s Bible Lesson offers some practical guidance as to how you can claim and demonstrate your divine right to immortality!

It all begins with the Golden Text. This week it comes from Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians, Chapter 9. In this chapter Paul writes about Israel’s identity as God’s chosen people, or those who have received the promise to be God’s chosen. But Paul clearly points out that this promise does not come from simply being a relative of a certain person, Abraham to be precise. It does not come from sharing a certain man’s DNA, genetic inheritance, or simply being descendants of Abraham. Certain ancestors do not guarantee the designation, “God’s chosen.”

Paul explains in Romans 9:6-8, “Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people! 7 Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted, though Abraham had other children, too. 8 This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily the children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children.” (New Living Translation)

Isn’t Paul beginning to hint at the wonderful promise to be the children of God as not dependent on material, mortal connections by birth and heritage? Perhaps something more, something having to do with thought? Children of “the Promise.”

Remember in the Gospels when certain Jews protested to John the Baptist about being “Sons of Abraham,” that John told them, “I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” (Gospels of Matthew and Luke.)

So, the question remains, is mere mortal heritage the key to being chosen children of God? Certain physical characteristics? Certain DNA? Or is there another element, a choice, a decision, an acceptance of “the Promise?” The promise to be the children of God and act like it? Consider this verse…

Golden Text: Romans 9:26 “…it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.”

Actually Paul is quoting here a statement by the Prophet, Hosea. Romans 9:25, 26 (The Living Translation) Concerning the Gentiles, God says in the prophecy of Hosea, “Those who were not my people, I will now call my people. And I will love those whom I did not love before. And,“Then, at the place where they were told,
‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”

So let’s find out how we get to join the party, how do we get to be called, “the children of the living God?”

The Responsive Reading (RR) comes from I Peter 1: 15,16,22-25 and I John 2: 24,25. Here we are encouraged to begin claiming our real identity, our status, as Shakespeare puts it, “To thine own self be true.” The question, “Which self?” Peter answers, “as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” Besides I Peter, at least three verses in Leviticus state this fact, that we should be holy because God is holy. (Peter knew his Scripture!)

1. So couldn’t we say one step towards immortality, or holiness is to clean up our conversation!

2. Next Peter encourages us, “Love one another with a pure heart.”

3. Then Peter encourages, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” “The word of the Lord endureth for ever”… So being born of the Word is also a step towards immortality.

4. The fourth step we might call keeping the faith. “Let that abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning, continuing in the Son and in the Father.”

Immortality, here, now, always our immortal expression of Life…

“And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal Life.” (I John 2:25, RR)

Now comes the inspiration and guidance from the Lesson.

Section 1 clearly establishes our origins as spiritual, not material.

Sections 2, 3, and 4 you might call a “Soap Opera” with a holy, happy ending. The story of Jacob/Israel and Esau.

Section 5 shows how the healing touch of the Christ transforms a mortal, dying tale into one of spiritual victory, the woman healed of her issue of blood.

Section 6 encourages us to embrace the light of immortality and let mortality be the only thing that passes away!

Section 1: Spiritual man, no beginning or end. Material man as the grass, here today gone tomorrow.

CedarS’ Executive Director, Warren Huff, began his study of this week’s Bible Lesson, last week. (That is allowed you know!) Warren was considering the following Bible citation, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.” (James 1:17, 18, B2)

Warren shared an explanation of this verse from his friendly mentor, Cobbey Crisler,

James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect—free, large, full—gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”—as in an eclipse.
“Scriptures that reinforce this promise of invariability include:
“God is not a man, that he should lie…hath he not said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23: 19}

And, “For I am the Lord; I change not.” (Malachi 3:6)
James 1:18 “Of his own will begat he us with the word—logos—of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures”—a sample of what He created to be consecrated to Himself.”

Two concepts of man are presented in the Lesson from the Book of Job. One concept acknowledges God’s place in man’s creation: “The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.” (Job 33:4, B3) Another concept pictures the material, mortal man, here today, gone tomorrow: “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.” (Job 14:1, 2, B4)

Warren also shared Cobbey’s deeper insight into Job’s words.

“Chapter 14 gives more enlightenment on a certain concept of man.
If you read this, I think you'll see there's very little emotional aspect to it. It's almost as if an employee is writing a memo to his boss from the sense of detachment. The only reason I point that out because if it does seem that way to you, it's an indication where Job is in thought. Is he getting as angry? Is he getting as aroused? Is he reacting to all of his friends' arguments here? Or is he saying very coolly and calmly, "Okay, I've investigated this dust-man and here’s what I've come up with so far."

[Job 14:1] "Man [that is] born of a woman [is] of few days, and full of trouble“
Would you quarrel with his conclusion there? That's the way it seems.

[Job 14:2] “He cometh forth like a flower. He’s cut down. As a shadow he continueth not." Now look where he's going from here.

“In Job 14:7 he says, “There is hope of a tree, when you cut it down, it's going to grow again. “Where do you think his next thought will lead him? If this happens with a tree, then what's the next question?

Job 14:10 He says, “Man dieth, and wasteth away: man giveth up the ghost, and where [is] he?" Remember, that is the way Jesus’ passing on the cross is related by the gospel of Luke [23:46]. Jesus “gave up the ghost."

That question, “Where is he?" Where did Jesus feel he was at that point?

In Job 14:14 you see a question asked, not a fact stated. "If a man die, shall he live [again]? " He may not be saying there that man is immortal. There may not be conviction totally behind that. At least he's asked the question, hasn't he? "If a man die, shall he live again?" Look at what his following line implies. “All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.” When you deal with the concept of change, that’s far from a terminus, isn’t it? That’s not really a termination. It's a change. It's exchanging some state for another. Therefore, we find that maybe this whole bugaboo, this last enemy, this great ultimatum that man faces as far as the primary fear is concerned, death, is becoming less and less the ghost, the terror that it was before, for Job.” The Book of Job, A Mental Court Case by B. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy comments, “Human experience in mortal life, which starts from an egg, corresponds with that of Job, when he says, “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” Mortals must emerge from this notion of material life as all-in-all. They must peck open their shells with Christian Science, and look outward and upward.” (552:13–19, S1)

What a classic view of mortality. Here we are sealed in an egg. We have been given some tools of inspiration and determination, and we need to get cracking. Time to get “pipping.” (The act of a chick breaking its way to freedom)

What a joy it must be to have that first glimpse of “outside the egg!” Isn’t that what our first healing in Christian Science is like?

I remember a high school swim meet and a new challenge. My coach had asked me out of necessity to swim the 200 meter free style. This event came immediately after my favorite event, the 200 meter medley relay. I swam backstroke in the relay and then he was asking me to swim the 200 free style immediately afterwards. I did not want to do it, it was not my event, and it made me sick to the stomach, literally. I had to ask the starter for a moment’s delay, jumped down from the starting block and ran into the bathroom. In the midst of getting rid of lunch it occurred to me the only thing that was making me sick was the belief of limitation that said, “I can’t do this, I need to rest.” I simply said to myself, “if this is what the team needs, I can do it.” I ran back to the starting block. The starter’s gun rang out and I dove in. I have to say I had never felt such freedom and strength in my life. I swam knowing that I could do it, with God’s help. I won the race, and with the best time I had ever had. I had broken out of that limiting sense of mortality for just a moment. One moment of immortality in the middle of mortality. It felt good!

Sections 2, 3, and 4: Jacob becomes Israel and becomes a better man and brother, and example of the “The Man of Promise.”

This story of Jacob and Esau, the deceit, the blessing, the running away, and the final transformation and regeneration deserves a thorough read through. You can find it in Genesis 27-32. Combine this with reading in our textbook pages 308 and 309 and the citations in the Lesson, S6 – S21. You are going to be a well-informed, Jacob/Israel expert. The lessons through Jacob’s life will be an inspiration that you carry with you always. And you will find much within your own life that illustrates how we can grow, evolve, and learn more of our own immortal nature. You will end up with “the blessing” that comes from fighting a good fight for a more spiritual nature. The blessing is well worth the fight [to hold onto every angel message you receive until it blesses you]!

In Section 2 the citations from Science and Health begin with a clarification that our work is not trying to make a deceitful mortal into God’s man. She writes, “Immortals, or God’s children in divine Science, are one harmonious family; but mortals, or the “children of men” in material sense, are discordant and ofttimes false brethren.”

(444:27, S6)

And, “The real man is spiritual and immortal, but the mortal and imperfect so-called “children of men” are counterfeits from the beginning, to be laid aside for the pure reality.” (409:20–23. S7)

The laying aside of this distortion of God’s man, the mortal sinner, not only opens our way to a sweeter sense of living with God, Good, but it also results in healing and moral redemption.

When my mother was attending Primary Class Instruction in Christian Science, her teacher, Mary Sands Lee, gave an assignment one day to each student. She assigned a topic for each student to prepare a thorough, Christian Science treatment. You might call it a focused prayer or mental treatment to heal a particular belief. When each student had been assigned their topic, my mother spoke up and said, “But what about murder?” Mrs. Lee without batting an eye said, “Well dear, you will have two assignments.” Perhaps Mrs. Lee discerned the need for my mom to heal this belief and so gave her a double assignment. And that night my mom was awake most of the night addressing the beliefs that she had been assigned. She knew the Truth; she filled her consciousness with all that God, Truth knows about each of His children. Mortal elements such as insanity, violence, and murder had no place in the consciousness of any of God’s children, His blessed, beloved, and immortal children.

When class resumed the next day each student presented their treatments with loving guidance from Mrs. Lee. Mom had two treatments to share and she did.

Sometime after my mother returned from class she received news about someone who she had known when they were girls. She was about the same age as my mom. This individual had been many years in an insane asylum in another state because of the apparent murder of her small child. Her mental confusion, depression, and diagnosed insanity that had led to the awful event promised to have her incarcerated her entire life. The news that my mom received was that this dear one had been completely healed, to the degree that the psychiatrists had determined that she was to be released. She returned as Peter writes, “born again.” She was free from all mental claims and under no medication. Her entire life was dedicated to a deeper understanding of Christian Science. She became an active church member. Went through class instruction.

As a young adult I had the chance to visit with this healed woman and her mother. And after attending church with them one Sunday I had the opportunity to meet her Christian Science teacher, John Lewis Selover. He greeted me with a warm smile and said, “These dear ones are beloved and valuable members in our church!”

As Jacob wrestled with his demons and bad memories, what Love the Father must have shared with him, transforming his name and nature. Isn’t it wonderful to know that that same hope of redemption, healing and restoration exists for all of us with ourselves and our families.

As our Leader assures in Science and Health, “Progress is born of experience. It is the ripening of mortal man, through which the mortal is dropped for the immortal. Either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind, and regenerate material sense and self. The old man with his deeds must be put off.” (296:4–9, S12)

Section 5: Christ healing lifts us all to immortal, healthy, holy existence.

Warren also shared Cobbey’s insights on citation B15: “John 1:12: The receptive, the ones who are willing, the ones who are tuned in, hear. “As many as receive him” is the qualification. “To them gave he,” … the results… “power” (which is not the correct translation here). It is not the Greek word “dynamis” which our word “dynamo” comes from, which mostly means power. It’s “exousia” which means more authority or right, that man is equipped with the authority and rights to “become the sons of God.”…

“John 1:13 Therefore to clarify for his readers what he means by “sons of God” and the receptivity that gives us the authority and right to become that “on earth as in heaven,” so to speak, we find that he takes apart the various theories of man’s origin, discounts every one of them, and relates man to God directly.

“Which were born, not of blood” (theoretical origin) Number one, interestingly enough, that word is not in the singular in the original Greek, it is in the plural. “Which were born, not of bloods.” Which says that you can take that apart somewhat. The blending of the sexes, or the races, all that have to do with bloods. Here, the roots aren’t there. Not for the sons of God, you will not find the roots in blood.

“The Second theoretical origin: “Nor of the will of the flesh,” that birth comes because mankind can’t help it. There is a built-in lust.

“Or, theoretical origin Number three: “Nor of the will of man,” that are willing, the human will itself being a creator, like “Gee, I wish I could have children.” Or now, because women were considered unfulfilled in their stereotyped role if they did not give birth, especially to a boy. So the will of man had much to do with it because theology was wrapped up into it.
“He adds that it’s “not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. Don’t go through channels.”

I find it helpful to see how the discerning thought of the Master would often uncover or reveal a deeper belief that would bind man to sickness. He did not treat a failing organ or wound, but couldn’t you say he treated or healed a deeper wound that was associated to a completely incorrect view of man and man’s origin?

Cobbey also commented on the healing of the woman in citation B16 (Mark 5:25-34).

“A woman, hemorrhaging 12 years, was healed by touching the “wings” of Jesus’ garment. (Cobbey Crisler (CC) on the version in Luke 8:41) “The woman… is at the absolute desperate end of a rope. Here we find receptivity. Blessed are those are in this state. Happy are those because this state of mind can be changed. “This radical change of thought was in the presence of the Christ-correction that Jesus was exercising in the mental realm. It’s going to be sufficient and the woman feels that it will help her. She’s lost all her money on physicians. [No health insurance…] Mark even tells us that she’s worse because of that choice. [Mark 5:26] All she does is touch the border of his garment. The issue of blood, the continuous hemorrhaging, had occurred for twelve years, had kept her out of the temple, kept her out of worship and made her as unclean as the lepers, …”

(Crisler on the version in Mark 5:34) Verse 34. Jesus calls the woman, “Daughter.”… Jesus is using daughter in an entirely new way… The woman’s problem is blood. He even lifts the term “daughter” out of a blood relationship and defines a divine relationship… The dignity of womanhood is demonstrated.”
(Crisler on the version in Luke 8:48) “Daughter, be of good comfort” (Verse 48). Look at how he’s addressing the thought of that woman. Not only the precious relationship to God, but the comfort. She hasn’t experienced that in twelve years. She’d lost all her money. She was about to be thrown on the society. There was nowhere to go when you were thrown on society. That may have happened to the woman who had been a sinner. Prostitution was the only open career for many women when they were simply thrown out and discarded from normal humanity…
Jesus refuses to allow that woman to walk away from the scene thinking that physical contact with his robe had anything to do with the healing. He says, again, “Your faith hath made you whole.” The word “whole” and the word “heal” in Anglo-Saxon have the identical root. It implies that disease is something less than wholeness, that it is a fragmentation of our being. Healing is the condition of being made whole.”

Warren’s added the following background information regarding “the border of his garment.” “In Numbers 15:38-40, God tells Moses to have Hebrew men attach fringes to the wings of their prayer shawl garments to remind them to abide by God’s commandments and to ‘be holy unto your God’ (Numbers 15:40). The woman healed of her 12-year issue was rewarded for exercising her faith that Christ Jesus was fulfilling this prophesy in Malachi: “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; (Mal. 4:2). Many others in Jesus day were also rewarded for exercising their faith in Jesus being the fulfillment of the scriptural promise of the healing power connected to the keeping of God’s law represented by the 10 Commandment fringes on the borders of his garment... Mark 6:56 records of Christ Jesus’ healing that “whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.” (or “perfectly whole” in the account in Matthew 14:36) Here’s to perfect wholeness for you in your faithfully following of the science of the Christ and in expounding and fulfilling God’s laws.]

As Mrs. Eddy writes, “Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony.” (495:20, S28)

Section 6: Immortal reality shines through all, always!

Jacob, our Master, Peter, John, Paul, Hosea, Mary Baker Eddy, my mom, Warren, Cobbey, you and me—all of us have glimpsed this light of immortality in our lives and the lives of those dear to us. The steps for regaining our blessedness as children of God, children of the Promise, children of Light are there for each of us, but it does take effort. Like the little chick pecking his or her way out of the egg to a new world, an expanded world.

Immortality, that is something more than “eternal life coming after death,” remains a promise, the Promise for the children on God.

I have long remembered a story from a Christian Science Lecture by Herbert Rieke, “Who Is Your Maker.” Mr. Rieke tells of an old legend,

“An Important Legend

“Through the power of the Christ, Truth, Jesus not only reformed the sinner and healed the sick, but through his resurrection he proved the unreality of death, and through his ascension he demonstrated that the real man is not material but spiritual. Christian Science is presenting this same full gospel. God, immortal Spirit, could not create a mortal material man so completely unlike Himself. Man must be spiritual and immortal like God. This used to be hard for me to understand, so overwhelming seemed the material evidence of a mortal material body. For a while I thought there must be two of me, the material and the spiritual. Then I heard a Christian Science lecture which completely revolutionized my thinking on this subject. The lecturer enabled me to understand my true spiritual selfhood by telling a legend in which a baby prince was kidnapped by a band of gypsies. Naturally he was brought up as a gypsy. When he was a grown man the gypsies came back through his kingdom. An old courtier had never given up looking for the prince. When he saw the young gypsy, he knew he was the prince because of his resemblance to the king, and said, "Do you know who you are?"

“The lad replied that he did and gave his gypsy name. But the courtier exclaimed, "No, you are the prince of this land.”

"There must be some mistake," returned the lad. "Can't you see I have a gypsy name and speak the gypsy language?"

"But you're not a gypsy," replied the courtier. "That's a lie about you. You're really the prince."

“Well then there must be two of me," said the young man. "The gypsy, I know all about him. But this prince, I know nothing of him."

“But the courtier protested, "No, no, there aren't two – there's just one – the prince. You are the prince, and you have dominion over all this land."

This naturally interested the young man, and he replied. "Well, if I'm really the prince as you say, answer me this one. Where did all this gypsy stuff come from?"

The courtier showed him that the gypsy was just a mistaken concept of identity. It wasn't going to do him any good to figure out where the gypsy came from. It was just a false concept of himself, a concept to be discarded. He needed to go to the king, identify himself, and claim his heritage. "And remember," said the courtier, "the king will be just as happy to see you as you are to see him."

“Claiming Our Heritage

So we have the answer to the argument, "Well, if I am really the perfect spiritual child of God, where did all this mortal, material, imperfect selfhood, with its aches and pains, its sin and limitation, come from?"

We're seeing that this is just a false sense of identity. It isn't going to help to try to explain it. We need to give up the false concept. Then we can go to the heavenly Father in prayer and claim our true heritage of infinite good. We need to identify ourselves as the son of the great King, the way Christ Jesus did…. We have never been a vagrant, a mortal, an imperfect creature. Man has always been the perfect spiritual child of God.”
