We returned from our time at CedarS and a family holiday in England to a very hot Dresden. Actually across much of Europe it has been a very hot and dry summer. It was hot during the day and hot during the night. Air conditioning is pretty much an unknown quantity in the homes in Europe so it was pretty much sit and swelter. Some stores and restaurants are air conditioned, but not many. We fondly remembered our days in England when we were completely refreshed with a swim in the sea.

One day here at home I resorted to a favorite heat beater. I filled our bath tub with cold Dresden tap water, (Dresden’s cold water is really cold), so a little while in that cold bath and I was completely cool. Total immersion and totally refreshed. That experience started me thinking about this week’s Bible Lesson on Spirit. For in many ways a total immersion in Spirit refreshes and renews us when we seem to be suffering in mortality’s hellish conditions. So let’s jump in to the lesson and the promise of discovering that life is indeed in and of Spirit. The promise is refreshment, renewal, and the presence of real comfort.

Golden Text Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. (English Standard Version)

And from a few other translations:

Good News Translation (GNT)

4 God's spirit made me and gave me life.

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

4 [It is] the Spirit of God that made me [which has stirred me up], and the breath of the Almighty that gives me life [which inspires me].

Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

4 It is the Spirit of God that made me, the breath of Shaddai that gives me life.

Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

4 God’s Spirit made me. My life comes from God All-Powerful.

This firm thought, that God, Spirit has made us is the firm basis for plunging into the fact that God makes us, not matter. Because God is Spirit, not matter!!!

The Responsive Reading includes the wonderful event when Paul addressed the Athenians. He was surrounded by beautiful temples standing in honor to many gods and he had the courage to proclaim, “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; For in him we live, and move, and have our being;” (Acts 17:24, 25, 28, CC insights in W’s PS#1)

Those statements sure get one thinking about God as the source or creation!

And the Psalmist continues from “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.” (Psalm 139: 7-11)

These are beloved passages, but as I read them this time a whole new thought came to me. It had to do with the seeming overwhelming belief of material life and matter as the source of life. Perhaps you have tried to answer inquirers’ questions about spiritual life and material life and found it difficult. They often comment but you can’t just deny what is right in front of me. Hmmm, well maybe you can if it is not what is the actual present reality! And that is where I thought of this Psalm. No matter where you might seem to be, or no matter what condition you might seem to be in, in truth you cannot be get beyond the allness and ever presence of God as Spirit. Thousands of years ago the Psalmist glimpsed these facts and shared them.

What hope comes from recognizing the fact that we can be in no condition or circumstance that is beyond the ever-present, all-embracing, life-giving Spirit, God. And that is a great way to start our lesson.

Section 1: Spirit, God is Life. CC insights in W’s PS#2

The Prophet, Ezekiel was among the Jewish exiles in Babylon when he was led to prophecy that the Israelites would eventually be restored to their homeland. He foresaw a new life and hope for the future, his vision was of life being restored to dry bones. We might reason, is there hope when all seems dry and dead?

As we returned to Germany and drove through a hot and brown countryside I found myself thinking about God’s “raindrops of divinity refreshing the earth.” (SH page 288:17-18) So I let my prayers fall as showers on all the land as we passed. There was lots of harvesting going on, mostly gathering straw into bales. I remembered that it was important for the straw to remain dry in the harvest. So in my prayers I simply left it in God’s hands as to the timing of the needed rain. I saw clouds in the sky and remembered when the Prophet Elijah sent his servant to look for clouds in the midst of drought. None appeared. He sent him seven times and finally a little cloud appeared, “like a man’s hand.” “And it came to pass mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain.” (I Kings 18)

Without the slightest sense of will on my part, I simply knew rain would come when it blessed. We arrived home in Dresden and the next day decided to go exploring to an unknown impounded lake. Once again we drove through very dry countryside. I continued a sort of gentle prayer assuring my thought that God was governing in absolute harmony all conditions. We arrived at the lake and began to explore driving around looking for access points. There was a parking place filled with cars. So we drove to the other side and found a camping place with a store where we bought some ice cream. There were so many people we decided to head back to the other side as a thunder storm began to roll in. There was lightning and wind. When we arrived back at the first spot people were beginning to leave because of the storm. We waited in the car. Soon so many people had left that we found a perfect parking spot right by a small beach. The storm passed and we all enjoyed a great swim in our newly discovered lake. And it was perfect for our dog Theo also.

The rain had arrived with perfect timing. Then Susanne, my wife, reported from Dresden that there had been rain there also.

As citation S3 puts it, “Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and immortal. It is this spiritual perception of Scripture, which lifts humanity out of disease and death and inspires faith.” (SH 547:28–32)

This is the beginning of honoring Spirit as creator and maintainer of all Life. We begin with demonstrations, prayers affirming Spirit as All-in-all. And this faithful acknowledgement of God, Spirit as continually governing and maintaining creation will result in healings and demonstrations of God’s tender care over all.

Section 2: Spirit is our one and only Cause. CC insights in W’s PS#3 & #4

Now that is a good beginning in our shift from matter based belief to the discovery of life in Spirit and it is found in this section! Romans 8 below makes it clear. God is our Father. Our papa, as in the Aramaic word, Abba!

From Romans 8:14–16 (B5) "as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:"

Mary Baker Eddy further develops this idea in passages from Science and Health:

"When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness." (S8 | 264:15)

"We cannot fathom the nature and quality of God’s creation by diving into the shallows of mortal belief. We must reverse our feeble flutterings — our efforts to find life and truth in matter — and rise above the testimony of the material senses, above the mortal to the immortal idea of God. These clearer, higher views inspire the God like man to reach the absolute centre and circumference of his being." (S9 | 262:9)

"Man as the offspring of God, as the idea of Spirit, is the immortal evidence that Spirit is harmonious and man eternal." (S10 | 29:30–32)

These facts understood and practiced result in the fact being demonstrated that man is indeed the spiritual idea of God, Spirit. And this results in healing and harmony being manifest.

As the following testimony from Anna S. van Leeuwen found in the Christian Science Journal of March 1918 illustrates:

“The truth that man is spiritual, not material, came to me through my experience in Christian Science. For three or four years I had been an invalid, having had several operations. In the last operation it had seemed necessary to remove from my left ear the eardrum and ear bones, and as we are supposed to hear by means of these parts, I was deaf in that ear. In the spring of 1916 I broke down, and the physician who was consulted pronounced my case a tubercular disease. As soon as school closed I went to a sanatorium, hoping to find the health and strength which I needed so much for my work, but instead of getting better I grew worse all the time. My eyes, which had been weak (glasses having been worn for ten years), gave out rapidly, and I began to fear for my sight. I had stood the strain long, but could not do so any longer, and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

I was in this condition when I came to the end of my financial resources and had to go back into the world, though the physician told me that if I should try to work I could not live over six months. When I returned to the city where I had lived, a friend offered me the hospitality of her home, but knowing that she was interested in Christian Science I refused. Believing that I was sick I did not want some one to tell me that I was not; for my idea of Christian Science was that its adherents simply thought sickness imaginary. Still I was not satisfied with the old doctrine which said that God sent sickness and we should pray God to take it away from us. Though I was not willing to acknowledge it, I needed love, and also somewhere to rest without worrying, so at last I accepted my friend's invitation, but only after having received her promise that she would not talk about Christian Science to me. The moment I reached her home she had to help me to bed, as I was too feeble to stand and had a burning fever. Before leaving me she handed me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, telling me to read if I could not sleep.

How grateful I am for the wisdom which closed her lips and left it to truth to prove itself. Being alone I began to think, and to wonder if Christian Science had wrought the change in her which I had noticed. After a while I came to the conclusion that nothing else could have done it, and having reached this point in my thought I decided that there was some truth in this teaching of which I did not know, and I was going to find out what it was. I forgot my ailments for the moment in my search for this truth, really not giving a thought to the fact that Christian Science was supposed to heal physical troubles.

I opened the textbook and began to read, but my eyes were so weak that I could read only one sentence at a time. Having finished a sentence I would lay the book down and think it over, trying to come to a conclusion as to whether or not I could accept it as true. I would think of what I had read and discuss it from all sides, for I wanted to know the truth but was not willing to accept it simply because others had done so. Every time, however, I came to the conclusion that what I had read was the truth. After having read for twenty minutes I was so filled with the healing thought of this truth, so certain of the presence of a loving Father-Mother God, that there was no room left for any discord.

I got up from the bed and it seemed as if all inharmonious conditions were laid aside as one lays aside a soiled garment. I realized right away that the eyes which a few minutes before had refused to let me read in comfort, were seeing far beyond my human sense of eyesight, and I laid off my glasses at that moment and have never used them again. My nerves, which had tried to play havoc with my happiness and reasoning power, heard the command, "Peace, be still," and obeyed. The tubercular trouble with all the rest had gone into the nothingness where it belonged. All this I realized at once, but somehow I did not think of my ears right then, only I knew there was no aching. But that night when trying to find out whether or not my watch had stopped I inadvertently held it to the left instead of to the right ear. I had never heard distinctly with my left ear, and how great was my surprise when for the first time in my life I heard the tick of my watch with that ear, with which I was never supposed to hear again. The eardrum is gone, the hole left by taking out the ear bone is still there, but God does not need these material conditions to make His child perfect. Being a teacher I needed a certificate of health after the doctor had pronounced my case tubercular disease, and within two weeks after the experience just related I had two certificates from the best known physicians of the state, saying that I was in perfect health.

This was the beginning of my experience in Christian Science. It is now a year and a half since I found God, and every day has brought a repetition of the blessings realized in those few moments. I am thankful for the physical healing, but the peace and joy which have come into my life, and which are there every day, make me so grateful, so happy, that I cannot express it. I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy, who was pure enough to show us the way, to prove to us that Christ Jesus is not merely a beautiful example for us to adore without following, but that his teachings are practical and that what he has done is possible for us to do. I am grateful to know that nothing matters except the knowledge of Truth, except the love of God which is reflected in all human beings.—Miss Anna S. van Leeuwen,Washington, D. C.”

Section 3: The power of the Spirit. CC insights in W’s PS#5 & #6

In Bible citations B8 and B9 we read of Jesus manifestations of the power of the Spirit. He was inspired in his home synagogue to declare that the Spirit of the Lord was present healing and delivering, right now. And in citation B9 he began to gather together his group of students or disciples with the discernment of Spirit’s guiding. Paul writes about this in citation B10,

"as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” (I Corinthians 2:9 as, 10, B10)

Some of you may be familiar with the movie from 2014, “Interstellar.” It certainly is thought provoking and inspiring. I thought of this movie when remembering an experience a dear friend had some years ago. I will not give too much away about the movie, but one scene involves a book on the shelf. Well, my friend had been introduced to Christian Science and also been given a copy of the textbook, Science and Health. And this copy of Science and Health went immediately to the book shelf. Not a single page read. Not even the covers opened. Up on the shelf. And this friend had no intention of reading the book even though they were experiencing serious physical and emontional problems. Then one day this friend walked by the book shelf and the long neglected copy of Science and Health fell out of the book shelf and landed in her hands. Actually she said it was like the book jumped off the shelf! She took it in hand, began to read, and soon saw all her problems solved. And she became a follower. Just like Jesus finding Nathaniel and his other disciples, the same power of the Spirit found my friend and her life was never the same afterwards.

Jesus, John the Baptist, Phillip, Nathanael, my friend, you, me we are living, moving, and having our being in Spirit, not matter. And sometimes that Spirit seeks us out because that Spirit is our loving Father-Mother!

Section 4: The power of Spirit heals. CC insights in W’s PS#7 & #8

The following words of Scripture have been loved for hundreds, thousands of years. Great inspiration has come from the beautiful love of the Christ that they illustrated.

"And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick." (B12 | Matthew 14:14)

"And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them: 31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel." (B13 | Matthew 15:30, 31)

Sermons have been preached on these passages. Hearts have been encouraged from the message that told of Jesus’ works in the hills of Galilee and beside the Syrian sea. A new hope was given, new lives were given to multitudes and a few laid the foundation for Jesus’ words to continue. But for many, many years and for many people these were stories of miracles wrought in the distant past. Christian practice was often preaching, conversion, and health and healing were relegated to a materia medica system. That is until….

You might know the story. A faithful Christian in February 1866 was on the way to a meeting of the Good Templars, a group established to help with addiction and alcohol abuse. This individual slipped on an icy sidewalk and was taken to a nearby house. A doctor examined her and determined that her injuries from the fall were internal and so severe that he felt there was nothing he could do. She was taken to her home. The fall was on Thursday. Sunday her local pastor visited to say good bye to a faithful member of his church. No hope in materia medica. No hope from her church. But then she called for her Bible and opened to an account of Jesus’ healing work. Her description of that moment is found below:

“St. Paul writes: "For to be carnally minded is death; but to
be spiritually minded is life and peace." This knowledge
came to me in an hour of great need; and I give it
to you as death-bed testimony to the daystar that dawned
on the night of material sense. This knowledge is
practical, for it wrought my immediate recovery from
an injury caused by an accident, and pronounced fatal
by the physicians. On the third day thereafter, I called
for my Bible, and opened it at Matthew ix. 2. As I
read, the healing Truth dawned upon my sense; and
the result was that I rose, dressed myself, and ever after
was in better health than I had before enjoyed. That
short experience included a glimpse of the great fact
that I have since tried to make plain to others, namely,
Life in and of Spirit; this Life being the sole reality of
existence.” Miscellaneous Writings. 24: 14-18

“Life in and of Spirit.” Of course you know that individual was Mary Baker Eddy. And following that healing she pursued the understanding of Spirit and spiritual life. Her research resulted in a healing power that she discovered and eventually would name, Christian Science. The healing power of Spirit was no longer relegated to ancient history and was no longer a once in a lifetime miraculous event, this healing power of Spirit was to become a daily event in every corner of the world. I can personally testify to that fact because of daily reports of healing coming from every continent on earth with the exception of Antarctica! Now. Today. And since I have learned to pray daily for the world without geographic or time barrier and also without limits regarding so-called species or ecosystem I fully expect this healing power of Spirit to reach every corner of our planet and beyond!

Section 5: The spirit of brotherly love.

First John gives us this reminder of Jesus' commandment:

"And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us." (B16 | I John 3:23, 24 )

Mary Baker Eddy adds, "When the divine precepts are understood, they unfold the foundation of fellowship, in which one mind is not at war with another, but all have one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accordance with the Scriptural command: “Let this Mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." (S25 | 276:4–9)

It is such a joy to see this divine Spirit of unity and love expressed and expected in daily experience. As we imbibe this teaching of Jesus that we should love one another we will experience evidence of it in every aspect of our lives.

One area of great Christian love is in the visitation of prisons and jails. As our Master shared in this parable of the Kingdom:
"Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.” ( Matthew 25:34)

Although there have been times I have prayed to keep individuals out of prison, there is one friend that I pray for regularly to get him into prison. Sometimes there have been little bureaucratic glitches. Actually both he and his wife visit a prison in their area and conduct very successful church services or Bible Lesson readings. The prisoners love their visits. Someone that knows of his regular visits sent him an email with the following story. It included the note from the email sender, “Maybe the result of your prison ministry!”

“When God sends you help, don't ask questions.

She hurried to the pharmacy to get medication, got back to

her car and found that she had locked her keys inside.

The woman found an old rusty coat hanger left on the ground

She looked at it and said, "I don't know how to use this."

She bowed her head and asked God to send her some HELP.

Within 5 minutes a beat-up old motorcycle pulled up, driven by a bearded man who was

wearing an old biker skull rag. He got off of his cycle and asked if he could help.

She said: "Yes, my daughter is sick. I've locked my keys in

my car. I must get home. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?"

He said, "Sure." He walked over to the car, and in less than

a minute the car was open.

She hugged the man and through tears said, "Thank You SO

Much! You are a very nice man."

The man replied, "Lady, I am NOT a nice man. I just got out

of PRISON yesterday; I was in prison for car theft."

The woman hugged the man again sobbing, "Oh, thank you, God!

You even sent me a Professional!"

Section 6: The baptism of Spirit, transforming, cleansing, purifying.

Speaking of prisoners! Can’t it be said that as long as we think of ourselves as material, dying, sinning, sick, hungry, fearful, lacking, angry, hurt mortals we are indeed prisioners to matter?

As citation B19 says, "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (B19 | Ephesians 4:1, 3–6)

What a glorious proposition that as Mary Baker Eddy experienced the saving grace of Spirit and endeavored to understand how Spirit had healed her that she made a discovery that has blessed all mankind in every corner of the world and perhaps beyond. She writes in Science and Health:

"The Bible teaches transformation of the body by the renewal of Spirit. The baptism of Spirit, washing the body of all the impurities of flesh, signifies that the pure in heart see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration." (S28 | 241:13–14, 27)

"Spirit blesses man, but man cannot “tell whence it cometh.” By it the sick are healed, the sorrowing are 30 comforted, and the sinning are reformed. These are the effects of one universal God, the invisible good dwelling in eternal Science." (S29 | 78:28)

"Spirit and all things spiritual are the real and eternal." (S30 | 289:29)

As an example of the healing power of Spirit I offer the following testimony just sent to me this morning. Every corner of the world has been blessed by the discovery of this Science of Spirit. I let the testimony speak for itself.

“I am always grateful for the healings my children had when they were young. One such healing stands out to me. When my daughter was about 14 she was to be given a lift home from school by the mother of one of her friends. Unknown to me she had developed a condition during the day, when one side of her face had become distorted. Her friend's mom was so concerned, and without consulting me, she took her to the doctor, who diagnosed her to have Bell's palsy. She was informed that this could be some while before coming right, if not permanent.

"When they finally arrived home, I was a bit concerned that she had not had my permission to have a medical diagnosis, as we had always turned to prayer for healing.

"I thanked the lady for her concern and realized she had acted in the child's best interest.

"I immediately began to pray to deny the false evidence before us. To acknowledge that she was "God's perfect child…" We discussed the truths that Christian Science teaches and declared that nothing could touch a spiritual idea. One of the particular passages from Science and Health which I remember came to me " a spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive" (Science and Health page 463) The next day my daughter was back at school, and although the evidence had not completely gone, no one mentioned it. After a couple of days there was no trace.and the healing was permanent.

"You can imagine how grateful we all were for this healing

Much love,"

Yes, I can imagine since I have seen this transforming, purifying power of Spirit demonstrated my entire life in my family and in the lives of thousands of others. One experience occurs to me that illustrated not just a personal protection or salvation, but how this Science of Spirit blesses all.

When our son Noah was about one year old we were on an island in the North Sea off Germany. My wife was working on special assignment helping a mother with her son. They were at what is a called a “Mutter-Kind Kur.” This is a unique German system for preventive health care. A time of rest and recuperation for mother and child. But suddenly a wave of scarlet fever swept through the entire Kur (Cure) center. Some mothers were preparing to leave the island because of the epidemic. Then our little Noah began to experience high fever and could not go to sleep. I rode my bike up to the pay phone and called my mother, a Christian Science practitioner. In the ten minutes it took to ride the bike home Noah was healed. I returned to find him cool as a cucumber and sleeping soundly. As a new Papa I was also comforted beyond belief. Tears of gratitude fell on his pillow. Now the wonderful thing about this Science of Spirit and Love….the next day the Kur Center was a new place. No more fever. No more fear. Everyone stayed and had a wonderful time.

This Science is ours. Let’s live it and see how Spirit blesses our entire world.

Come on in, the water of Spirit is fine!
