Learning about God is one of the greatest of adventures. I so appreciate my Sunday School teachers and their clever ways of helping us learn and remember important spiritual lessons. One of their techniques included what are called acrostics. The word “acrostic" comes from the Greek words “akros" (outermost) and “stichos" (line of verse). Usually, the word or message spelled out by the first letters of each line is the overall subject of the acrostic.

Here are examples of acrostics with spiritual points: Home: Harmony Of Mind Expressed
Fear: False Evidence Appearing Real. Forgetting Everything About Reality.
Cot & Bed: “The Consciousness Of Truth rests us more than hours of repose…” (218:7)
[W: So, COT-(Consciousness-Of-Truth-) rest beats BED-(Boring-Erroneous-Dream-) rest!]

Double DNA (of genetic ‘science’): DeoxyriboNucleic Acid Does Not Apply
(In past Mets, CedarS Executive Director, Warren Huff, has coined the italicized acrostics and joined together the DNA acrostics.)

You might have some loved examples that help you remember your favorite spiritual lessons.

What I discovered this week with our Christian Science Bible Lesson on the subject Man is that it begins with two acrostics from thousands of years ago. Both the Golden Text and the Responsive Reading are from two acrostic poems found in the Book of Psalms. These Psalms are built around an acrostic that utilizes the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The Word of God was just as important to the Jews as it is to us today. And since many of their lessons were the remembering of that Word of God, they also found great use of acrostics in their writing and remembering.

For example Psalm 37 which is the source of our Golden Text this week Wikipedia describes as follows: “It has the form of an acrostic Hebrew poem, and is thought to have been written by David in his old age.” Mathew Henry, who wrote a six-volume commentary on the Bible in the 1700s described Psalm 37 as, “David’s call to patience and confidence.” In some ways it was David’s attempt to teach us that even though it seems evil succeeds where good fails, continue in the right and you will have a future of peace. Today we might simply say, “Hang in there and don’t be discouraged. You will succeed with God’s help.”

Golden Text: Psalms 37:37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. [W’s PS#1, a Ken Cooper offering Downloadable at top online]

The following round-up of alternative translations of the Golden Text was researched by a friend and fellow practitioner in California, Karenlee Mannerino CS.

Golden Text | Ps. 37:37 AMP – Mark the blameless man and behold the upright, for there is a happy end for the man of peace.

NRSV – Mark the blameless, and behold the upright, for there is posterity for the peaceable.

NLT – Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.

CEB – Observe those who have integrity and watch those whose heart is right because the future belongs to persons of peace.

MSG – Keep your eye on the healthy soul, scrutinize the straight life;
There’s a future in strenuous wholeness.

Much of the Responsive Reading comes from Psalm 119 and is another example of an acrostic poem also utilizing each letter of the Hebrew alphabet as the beginning of each stanza. This Psalm is sometimes referred to as “Happy Are Those Whose Way Is Perfect.” So what we have in our Golden Text and Responsive Reading is a firm foundation for beginning with perfection, remaining with perfection, and ending up with perfection.

I really recommend an enjoyable study of Psalms 57 and 119 as firm foundation for bringing out the fruits found in this Bible Lesson. So, on to our perfect way! [With some Cobbey Crisler insights on being God’s likeness as in Ps. 17:15, RR, in W’s PS#2]

Section 1: In the beginning it was really good! [Insights in W’s PS#3, #4 and #5]

When I read the phrase “In the beginning” I always think of my son, Johann. It is just because some months back he so vehemently stated, “But I thought God is without beginning and without end!” And so right he is. As Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health,Genesis i. 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only, — that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe.” SH 502:22-27

We are seeing as we study this Bible Lesson that the concept of unchanged perfection in God’s creation rings throughout the Bible. It is not some modern day invention but is rather the absolute firm foundation found throughout the Bible from Old Testament to New Testament. In Bible citation B2, “With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright. As for God, his way is perfect; And he maketh my way perfect.”

What Mary Baker Eddy established is the fact that man’s demonstrable perfect health and wholeness is sourced in the Bible. She writes, “The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness. The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlike Spirit. Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science.” (S3 | 475:7–13)

This was delightfully illustrated in a report from a friend in New Zealand. As she writes,

“Perfect God, perfect man”

  • is the basis of thought (Christian Science prayer) and demonstration (proof).
  • aligns thought with God: helps open to receive right idea, manifest.

With a desire to share spirituality in my community—encouraged by a dear friend to DO this—I popped into our one-horse (yes!) village. I was surprised to see the one store open this public holiday, empty apart from its new owners—a young couple from a distant land: husband brandishing a broom inside, wife sweeping up outside.

There Ramen (the wife) and I chatted briefly. Interested in people, I like to greet them by their real names, not an anglicised version. A small way to

Respect, rightly identify God's perfect man.

Jagdeep said he'd been trying to “sweep” a fantail (a bird whose aerobatics are ideal for fly-catching) from the high room before closing time so it wouldn't trigger security alarms. Both desperate. The thirsty, fearful tiny bird gasped.

I said “Let me think about it.” Jagdeep relaxed a little. Trusting perfect Mind in prayer as I put a few things in my basket, an idea promptly came. My silent thanks.

Might he try a dish of water by the door? The bird may check out daylight reflected from it, drink, find its way? Jagdeep thoughtfully did so.

I took the purchase to our truck. Ramen and I chatted about the bird.

She confided concerns about fidelity in the marriage. I gently refused to entertain that: “I don't need the details.” Then she shared her deep desire for a child after trying for five years.

My response was simple, heartfelt, “God is the perfect Creator.” She mentioned her concept of God, being all of creation. We left it at that.

I checked about the fantail. It was gone. Jagdeep had kept on with other work—left it to God, we might say—not seen how it left: pleased, puzzled.

“We don't need the details.” I smiled, “It's between God and the bird.”

Another day, I challenged Jagdeep about a rude message on his 'loud' T-shirt: “Why is a nice man like you saying that?” Respect, ID perfect man.

Ramen chuckled; she had tried to stop it too. The T-shirts toned down a lot.

When I missed seeing her at the shop, I asked him how she was doing.

“Oh, very well. She's at home preparing for our baby!”

Their little boy arrived to much joy 'according to the time of life' [Bible] nine months after the holiday. First-time grandmother made a long journey to support the new family. I've yet to meet the baby, but notice Jagdeep is seriously glad to be parenting.

I don't all need the details. It's between God and Her idea.

To sum up what I'm learning from this experience:

  • God is the perfect Creator.
  • Respect, rightly identify God's perfect man.
  • We don't need all the details (though much good may be there).
  • Healing is always between God and idea/ man.
  • Who has made man perfect and at peace? God, that’s who!

Section 2: “Have we not all one Father?” Let’s live in peace.

I have often shared that I am not a Bible expert or scholar, it is simply one of my two favorite books in the whole world. And what fun it is to discover in a favorite book a story that you never remember reading before. So, it is with this section’s story from Genesis about Isaac and Abimelech! I am not going to spoil it for you. You read it yourself! You will love it!

In Bible citation B8 it’s a message of peace and living in harmony that rings true for us today. (Genesis 26:1, 12–17, 19–22, 26–31)

As Science and Health citation S7 explains, “It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love. Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brotherhood of man will be established.” (467:9–13)

We have been experimenting here in Dresden with a Christian Science Reading Room that never closes. Open 24/7. So I was disappointed when I received a call from a neighbor that lives in the same building upstairs. He asked, “Do you ever lock the door to the Reading Room?” I explained that we were trying to keep it open. He expressed himself clearly that during the day was okay, but at night he thought it should be locked. Well, even when the door is open, no one can access the building through the Reading Room. But, rather than protest and try to explain our concept, I simply said, I will be right down. I live only five blocks from the Reading Room so I was there in a flash and locked the door.

Then I continued my prayers about the Reading Room accessibility. I am able to be there about five or six hours per day and in the other daylight hours it operates as a self-service Reading Room with a sign-in guest book and invitation to borrow any book. This has worked well to this point. And just last week I came up with the idea of a key safe for members and friends to be able to come in any time day or night with a code. Harmony has prevailed and even more.

On Friday I put a table outside of the Reading Room with piles of books that people had donated to the Reading Room. I penned a note that explained these books were donations to the Reading Room and we would like to give them as gifts. During the day most books were taken. Then, an unexpected rain came Saturday. My daughter Martha and I made a quick trip to move the books out of the rain. When we arrived we found that most books were gone, just a few, very nice ones left. But someone had carefully moved them where they were safe out of the rain, but still available. Also I noticed that all the current Christian Science Heralds had been taken. It left me with the most wonderful sense of peace, and a feeling that the Reading Room being cared for by our neighbors.

Section 3: “Do the right thing.” [Insights in W’s PS#6]

There are many situations where we are called to do the right thing. Maybe at school someone is being picked on or bullied? There might be an opportunity for us to step forward or befriend the object of the abuse. Or, we might notice someone that is in need of help or of a friend. Perhaps they are not in our usual group of contacts or friends. So, being inspired by Jesus’ example we reach out in moral courage and love,

In a recent conversation with a friend who had not been to church in a very long time I sensed there might be great spiritual progress in reestablishing contact with a church. So, I mentioned one of the churches that was closest to him. He then proceeded to tell of a visit he made to that church and that he did not receive one word of greeting as he lingered by the door hoping for some sign of welcome. He even commented he was doing very well at the time, so he looked just fine. But he got the feeling everyone was just interested in each other, not an outsider.

I wish I could have offered him some hope, but I decided to go him one better. Sometimes laughter can break the mesmerism of coldness, narrowness, and Phariseesism. So I told him a hilarious experience I’d had.

I visited the very same church. It was a time when I was surfing at least three or four times a week. My hair was to the middle of my back, I had a long beard, and I guess you could say I looked like I was a beach bum. I entered the very same church he had spoken about in a bright Hawaiian-style shirt. At my side was a dear friend from Jamaica, tall, wearing a hat that could have covered dreadlocks, and very black. I guess we looked like quite a pair as we entered the church. Afterwards, I realized that we could have been a stereotype picture of drug-dealers—even though we were both practicing Christian Scientists, and I was in the public practice.

After the readings and hymns I was prompted to give a testimony. As I turned to face the audience I was met with very cold stares. The testimony gradually changed the atmosphere. I was soon taken at my Word and not my looks. But haven’t we all at times been tempted to judge someone by their looks, their past, their occupation, or office? Would Jesus have done that? I think not. The example in this section shows that. Jesus invited Levi to follow him. And we are told that many publicans and sinners (tax collectors and sinners) ate with Jesus. He did not shun them!

The verse below from Science and Health is a favorite of many of us. And, it certainly gives us Christianly Scientific instruction as to how we can “do the right thing.”

“Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.” (S13 | 476:32–5, could be viewed as MBE’s version of how Jesus practiced the Golden Text to “Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright…” Ps. 37:37)

To put it plainly and simply Jesus did not judge people because of their appearance. He did not judge people because of their “station” in life. He was absolutely open, receptive, and loving to all whose heart was seeking. It did not matter what they looked like.

Section 4: The call is, “Wilt thou be made whole?” [Insights in W’s PS#7 and #8]

I just received an email with the following comments, “a thought that came to me within this lesson in Section 4 about the Pool of Bethesda. Why did Jesus even ask the impotent man if he wanted (maybe one could even think about the literal meaning “wilt thou” as “will you”?) to be healed? Wasn’t it obvious? So, why did he ask? What’s the message here? Interesting, right?”

Well, what do you say? Have you even asked yourself, “Do I really want to be healed?” Am I holding my tatters close, my old way of thinking of myself? Am I actually ready to rise up? Am I ready to stop thinking about what I don’t have and reach out to what I could have? Am I ready to let go of familiar, closely-held false beliefs and replace them with new thought patterns, new ways? Am I ready, willing, and able to embrace “the way that is perfect?”

I think we must realize the tremendous mesmeric effect that was lingering around that pool in Bethesda!!!!

A friend shared this. She is the only Christian Scientist that she knows of on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. She is finding inventive ways to let her light shine, like studying her lesson in a coffee shop. She wrote,

“I have an example from a very long time ago.. The details are hazy, although the lesson learned stands out like a beacon.

“I had been reading an address to a Christian Science nursing facility written by a senior Christian Science practitioner and teacher. You will be familiar with it. He gave the illustration of a group of people in a room having been hypnotized into seeing an elephant in there with them. The elephant seemed very real. It was big, and might cause a lot of damage. How should they pray about it? Then a stranger comes in, who has not been hypnotized, and can see quite plainly that there was no elephant there in the first place.

“I had done something quite painful to my back, and could hardly get up from my bed without difficulty. However, I did see quite clearly that in the same way that the elephant did not in fact exist, however real it might have seemed, the same could be said of the pain in my back. The illustration of the nothingness of the elephant made such an impression on me that it just seemed to wipe out the idea in my thought that pain could be real. It disappeared in a short space of time. It did re-appear a couple of days later, but as I recall, the understanding I had gained so vividly came to me again, and the bodily problem just wasn’t there anymore.

“I’m offering this particular illustration because it was so quick and so vivid, and to human view I was quite alone ‘dealing with it’. My consciousness was simply completely taken over by this understanding. I am grateful to have been reminded of it.

“My study of, and working with, Barbara Cook Spencer’s article on the Holy Ghost, just recently has crystalized for me that this was, and is, the Holy Ghost simply doing its job, (and I quote Mrs. Spencer), ‘the sum total of intelligent, omnipresent, all-powerful Mind-force’, the ‘divinely mental energy … maintaining the harmony and cohesiveness of being throughout the endless universe of Spirit’. Without hands. Natural, divinely impelled, obedience.

“Mrs. Cook quotes Mrs. Eddy, ‘Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love.’ Wonderful to feel caught-up in this eternal truth. And to witness the coincidence of the human and the divine.
“The Holy Ghost: antidoting the poison of willpower” by Barbara Cook Spencer

From the November 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This article was originally published on JSH-Online on September 17, 2012.

And the following account comes from South Africa!

“I had a quick healing of flu for which I was particularly grateful, as in the past I had battled to overcome this mesmeric belief which had sometimes lasted for several weeks.

“About two days before my fifth grandchild was due to arrive, I started to manifest all the symptoms of flu, sore throat, runny-nose, etc.. I had been reading an article by Jack Hubbell, a Christian Science practitioner and Teacher from California. The address was entitled "Disarming Animal Magnetism". It brought out the importance Mrs. Eddy recognized for her students to overcome animal magnetism in order to heal. I realized these symptoms were aggressive mental suggestion coming to me in the guise of my own thinking, tempting me to believe they were true. I mentally turned away from this false concept of man and affirmed my true selfhood as God's perfect child.

“On Sunday morning as I was leaving my house to go to church, my neighbor greeted me and when she heard my hoarse voice she said "you sound awful, you must have the dreadful flu which is doing the rounds" I found myself agreeing "yes I have."

“As I got into my car I wondered how I could have agreed so readily to this false assumption! I immediately reversed this thought. I affirmed that as the likeness of God, made in His image 'it was impossible for me to have anything which was not God-like. After a beautiful church service, joyous hymns and solo, a beautiful Lesson, I realized that all symptoms of flu had completely gone, I was healed. I was able to go to the nursing home and enjoy seeing my new granddaughter.

On returning home, I again saw my neighbor, and told her I had been to see my new grandchild. She was amazed to hear that my voice was normal and that all signs of flu had vanished. My neighbor asked how did I manage to do that?!! I told her that as a Christian Scientist I had prayed about it. We had quite a long discussion about C.S. and she was very interested.”

All those sun-bathing beside the Pool of Bethesda should have been Son-Bathing, right?

Section 5: Reflect God’s perfect peace [Insights in W’s PS#8]

The Way of peace and perfection is ours as we embrace our Father’s vision of who we really are. It is not always immediately evident—and it does take work—but the possibilities are endless. The Apostle Paul like Jesus was thoroughly schooled in the Hebrew Scripture. The messages of Psalms 37 and Psalm 119 would have been completely memorized, one Hebrew letter at a time.

And Paul’s understanding would be reflected in his writings, as in his letters to the Corinthian Christians who were beginning to walk in the Gospel of peace.

He wrote them:
“when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” (B19 | I Corinthians 13:10)

“Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” (B20 | II Corinthians 13:11)

when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled. 12 We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled. 12 We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!B20| II Cor 13:11 PHIL —cheer up! Aim at perfection and accept my encouragement, agree with one another and live at peace. So shall the God of love and peace be ever with you.

NLT – Rejoice. Change your ways. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.

MSG – Be cheerful. Keep things in good repair. Keep your spirits up. Think in harmony. Be agreeable. Do all that, and the God of love and peace will be with you for sure.

CEB – Put things in order, respond to my encouragement, be in harmony with each other, and live in peace—and the God of love and peace will be with you.

The wonderful thing is that this way of perfection and subsequent peace is the Way of our Lord, the Way of Truth, the Way of healing. When we stumble we rise up and are healed.

A friend from Brazil wrote the following:

“It happened last year when I was in Brazil. I was running while listening to the Bible Lesson. I was also praying for myself, mainly for forgiveness and healing of disappointment in regards to the belief of not being able to demonstrate more authority in my thinking and action in regards to eating. I tripped and fell so heavily on my knees, and elbows, but immediately I knew and affirmed ‘No, I am the spiritual idea of divine Mind, I cannot fall from Love as I exist in Love. Also I am innocent’.

“After these affirmations I stood up and started walking slowly, and decided not to look on my knees and elbows. They hurt, but I knew there is not sensation in matter – all belief and sensation is in mortal mind. After finishing my walk around the track, I walked home and got a shower. Never looked on the body. I put on something that would be loose and started my work. When I needed to move to get something from the floor, I felt discomfort. Still praying I realized that I could be creative and somehow was able to get what I needed. During the rest of the day I ‘fasted’— just allowing God's perfect ideas in my consciousness and rejected all belief of swelling, inflammation, aging and difficulty in healing, and replaced them with the thoughts ‘Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness. The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlike Spirit. Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science.’ (SH p. 475)

“I refuted also the idea that it would be more painful in the evening – and all the beliefs of materia medica. I worked with the sense of gratitude for God's Allness and on forgiving myself for the silliness of accepting so erroneous concepts about my true identity. This was a call to wake-up to my true identity. After few days – maybe three – I was back jogging – as I felt no discomfort at all in the knees. The bruises took a little longer to vanish, but after a while they also disappeared. What I learned most important, was that I needed to stop accepting the mortal concept about myself, and all the discordant beliefs. Still working on this as you know so well.

“As you can see, our Father’s way of perfection and peace knows no limits. It is as present today as it was when the Psalms powerfully rang out thousands of years ago. And geography, borders, oceans? They are indeed no limit to the way of perfection and peace. If you live in New Zealand, South Africa, the Canary Islands or Brazil—the Way is before you. And yes, even in America, Canada, Asia, Europe, even the North Pole or Alpha Centauri, the Way of the Lord is there in perfection and peace.”

And to wrap it up this week, here is a solo written by our dear CedarS friend and mom, Desiree Goyette. Lyrics are below and YouTube version here: https://youtu.be/LYA3-7mA7XI

"Even as the Father" – Desiree Goyette

“Not of the earth, not of the dust, God’s man innocent and pure.

Man is not fallen, man cannot fail, for his heritage is holy secure.

Shining reflections, children of light singing through the darkest night.

Strengthened by Spirit, conquering ev’ry lie with the “lovliness of Love” which never dies.

“Be ye therefore perfect even as the Father”, ev’ry step a moment of glorious birth.

For man is upright, he is upright, he is not fallen not of the earth.

“And so the Shepherd has washed them clean, robed in radiance, crowned in light.

Claim all His blessings make them your own,

For each blessing is your noble right.

“Be ye therefore perfect even as the Father”, ev’ry step a moment of dignity.

For man is upright, he is upright. Arise, God’s man is free!”
