W's Post Scripts: Entertain Love's Angels Hourly!!
Insights from Cobbey Crisler and Ken Cooper
on select citations for
Love”—
the Christian Science Bible Lesson for F, 2019

Warren’s (W’s) PS#1—Ken Cooper’s poem this week— Peter's Escape—springs from both the angels in the Golden Text (“he will command his angels…to guard you in all your ways” (Ps. 91:11) and throughout this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson (B1, S3, S4, B7, S9, S14, B12, B16, B17, S24, B19). Ken connects this theme with the Section 5 jail break of Peter orchestrated by angels! (Acts 12: 4-11, citation B16) This poem of healing can be found under Downloads near the upper right corner of both online versions of CedarS posts this week.

When Ken emailed this week’s contribution to me, he added:

Please find attached my poem for this week – Peter's Escape. I have additionally included the option to share a past poem- The Good Shepherd. (Luke 15:4-7, B10)

Peter's Escape can be listened to on https://youtu.be/3ESWuDFjGSA, – The Good Shepherd on https://youtu.be/Pedj0qY5Cig, (this included some well-liked pictures of a puppy and lamb!).

When all hope has gone, God hasn’t. Love is what it is, and because Divine Love is infinite there is never a moment when Love is not there with us, talking to us, encouraging and providing us with the angel messages of His Word. This is the beauty of the Golden Text.

When Jesus said, “I can of mine own self do nothing” he also said, “as I hear, I judge”. His constant communion with God’s thoughts passing to man were the angels of God's presence and are also ours. Listen, and hear, and we can feel that same Love that Jesus felt and expressed. When we love, we become as angels, and God, Love, is thereby glorified.

W’s PS#2—Cobbey Crisler on Ps. 107:1, 31 (B2) paying your bill by giving praise

“I'm going to give you an assignment in Psalm 107 because it's a very rewarding one to work with. In the first 22 verses, for example, when you are studying this independently at home, work out the steps that are being given us, the symptoms, the appointment with the Great Physician, the treatment, the complete remedy, and then paying your bill. That happens to be a refrain, "Pay your bill. Pay your bill." In this particular Psalm, in Verse 8, [and Verses 15, 21, 31] "Oh that [men] would praise the LORD [for] his goodness, and [for] his wonderful works to the children of men!" Follow that all the way through and you'll find three different sets of prescriptions and treatments that can be quite relevant to our own experience.”

[Woman's question on audio unclear except for "symptoms"] “The appointment with the Great Physician and then, of course, when you're in front of the Physician, that's face-to-face, seeing God's face, get the treatment, let His face shine upon thee, then the remedy, go out and have the prescription filled. The remedy solves the whole problem; then pay your bill. Follow that through and see what comes.”

[Bracketed substitutions from Mary Baker Eddy to show "the light which

Christian Science throws on the Scriptures" with an "incorporeal

or spiritual sense" of Love. (Science & Health 578)]

"[Divine Love] is my shepherd;" That’s MY RELATIONSHIP

"I shall not want." That’s MY SUPPLY!

W’s PS#4—Cobbey Crisler on W’s PS –Cobbey Crisler on citation B12, Psalms 103: 2, 3:
“We're all covered by insurance policies, perhaps life and health insurance. The Canadian spelling is probably better, "assurance" as far as biblical therapy is concerned. If you've ever wanted to know what benefits we have, Psalm 103 lists them: Verse 2, "Forget not all his benefits." We have "Forgive us iniquities," that's sin removed from man. "Disease," all of them, Verse 3. Removed from man's experience and nature.”

W’s PS#5Cobbey Crisler on Matthew 9:36-38 (B13) Jesus prays problem-solvers be sent
In Verse 36 [Jesus] looking around after disposing of the Pharisaical thought, he sees multitudes needing help, and was moved with compassion. There they were as sheep. They were shepherdless.”

(Verse 37). “He turned to his disciples then, and his disciples in future generations, and made the remark, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few.” Does that imply he expected his disciples to be out there solving human problems, healing?

(Verse 38). He even asks them to “Pray the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.”

W’s PS#6—Cobbey Crisler on Matt. 20:30-34 (B14) similar to cases of blindness healed in Mark 10:46-52 & Luke 10:35-43
“In Chapter 10 of Mark, Verse 46, “They come to Jericho; and the healing of blind Bartimaeus” who [in Verse 47] calls and calls and all of his friends and neighbors tell him to keep quiet, “Quiet, you’re bothering Jesus.” Here’s the man with the need that Jeremiah [31:8] had said would be attracted by the New Covenant. The blind would come and be attracted Jeremiah had said. So, they told him to keep quiet in Verse 48; didn’t have much effect on him; he kept calling. [In Verse 49] Jesus heard through the crowd and healed him. Notice that he uses in Verse 52, “thy faith hath made thee whole”—the wholeness of man. The concept of the wholeness of man under the wholeness of God doesn’t allow for a gap called blindness.”

W’s PS#7Cobbey Crisler’s insights on Acts12:1-11 (B19)—Peter jail break by prayer:

And here at the Passover season, which seems to be the popular time for execution… Herod arrests Peter, throws him into prison with sixteen soldiers guarding him with full intent to bring him out and try him and execute him after the Passover festival. (…This is Herod Agrippa the First, who ruled all Palestine in the years 41-44 A.D. He was grandson of Herod the Great…) As one might translate the Greek in Acts 12, verse 5: “Instant and earnest prayer was made unceasing of the church unto God for him.”…

This focus collectively on prayer – does it have power? Well, that very night, we can see the effectiveness of such prayer because Peter suddenly, not knowing really what is happening himself, is fast asleep in the prison when he is awakened, told to “rise up quickly. His chains fall off from his hands.”… The angel, with a note of human practicality, “suggests that Peter put on his sandals. He does, still really not knowing what he is doing, thinking it’s almost a dream he is going through.”… “He goes out through the first and second ward and finally to the gate that leadeth unto the city. It opens, as if by itself. They go out together. The angel disappears.”…

Peter, for the first time in Acts 12, verse 11, realizes what has happened and states “now I know for sure that God hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod. Peter makes his way to what was apparently a favorite Christian assembly point. And that is called the house of Mary,” the mother of John, whose surname was Mark… John Mark being the one to whom the gospel has been attributed.

[The rest of the story, beyond this week’s markers:]
This may have been the house church in Jerusalem where the early church held many of its meetings. It was here that the church was praying for the release of Peter.
And now we’re about to be introduced to one of my favorite characters in the Bible. Her name is Rhoda. This Rhoda acts like many little girls I know, and I’m sure that you know. “Peter knocks at the door of the gate.” (Knocking sound) And everybody’s praying so heavily inside no one hears him “except for this child.” (Acts 12:13) Rhoda comes to the gate and recognizes Peter’s voice. Now do you think that Rhoda lets Peter in? No.
“She’s so excited she leaves Peter standing there and races inside the house and tells everybody that Peter’s out there.”… You can imagine what this adult church-going group said to Rhoda. “They turned to her and say, ‘You are mad!”… (See Acts 12:15)… Many groups of adults dismiss children in similar terms. And isn’t it a commentary somewhat on the conviction, or lack of it, behind their prayer? “Don’t bother us, Rhoda, we’re praying.” And yet, the answer to their prayer stood outside the gate, and a little child was trying to lead them there. Now, when it says “she constantly affirmed that it was so,” I think you could get very easily a picture of a little girl stamping her foot on the ground, insisting that Peter was there…
Finally, to shut her up, they are willing to concede that “it might be his angel,” something other than Peter himself, assuming perhaps that Peter had been executed… “But Peter persistently keeps knocking.” (See Acts 12:16) (Knocking sound) …
You notice it’s harder for him to get into John Mark’s Mother’s house than it was for him to get out of jail. And they come and open the door and are astonished.”
