Pycl #1: There is a real focus on "walking" and footsteps, progress, in this week's lesson. It seems like it would be fun to figure out a way to capitalize on this theme. Below, are a couple of ideas that you might start with, you can come up with some of your own if these get the "juices flowing", so to speak.

Look at the 23rd Psalm together, both the Responsive Reading and the spiritual interpretation in citation S9. Can you see how the twenty-third Psalm gives us a "step by step" way to move forward, to progress in our understanding of what is true and real? It gives us "instructions".

"No wanting" (desiring for something in a material way—and/or — having a need that is unfulfilled.) "no being afraid of evil"— because God/Good is with me, correcting, governing, guiding, supplying (a table, green pastures, still waters, oil). "Dwell in Love's house" in "the consciousness of Love". These are commands that are like "footsteps" to follow.

What are some "steps" or "paths" that are mentioned in the lesson that help us figure out exactly "how" to make progress as spiritual ideas in Christian Science. Here are some of the citations, see if you have other ways to express this, or ways to think about it with the students:

-"Acknowledge Him in all thy ways"— Responsive Rreading

-Strive to enter in, turn away from material sense-S7

-Understand God as Life (what does that mean?)-S13

-Emerge gently from matter into Spirit-S11

-Trust God-S17

-Seek the spiritual status of man-S15

-Unselfed love-S18

-Follow Christ Jesus-S18

-Experience-S27

-Hold perfect model in thought-S26

-Denial of claims of matter-S25

Each of these passages would need some careful thought and discussion, what do they really mean to us in our daily activity? What does it mean to "seek the spiritual status of man"? (for example) What is "status"?

If these are helpful citations as we think about steps that we can take to walk the path of seeing our immortal nature, then write some part of each on a paper cut out of a footprint. You can make a path through the church or Sunday School, or simply spread them across the table. How can we take one of these steps each day? When we take a step, such as "acknowledging Him in all [our] ways", is this a one time practice? Are any of these a one time practice?

Alternately, make a board game with these "footprints" on it, each with one of these phrases, or have a deck of cards that you draw with phrases such as these on them, and, perhaps, as you draw one and answer how we can take one of these steps today, you can advance on the game board. The students can come up with the details of the game, as long as we are thinking about how we "walk" this path of progress while we make up the game!

Pycl #2: One of the other smaller themes we can see is how the path that we are to follow is illuminated with the light of Mind, Love, Truth—God. How does this light operate in our day-to-day lives? Is it a "literal" light? With younger ones you could get out the flashlights and think together about how a flashlight can light up a dark path. It makes it easy to see obstacles, to progress quickly and safely, to predict the "ups and downs" that we are facing so that we can approach things with joy and intelligence, we get a broader view as we walk....You come up with some ways. What does this light symbolize? What do these other things symbolize? (the obstacles, speed of progress, etc.)

Pycl #3: I would think it really fun to write our own spiritual interpretation of the twenty-third Psalm. You can do this with almost any age. If the kids are older, have them each take a line. Put a new spiritual interpretation together and share it with the rest of Sunday School sometime!

You can start with Mary Baker Eddy’s spiritual interpretation if you want, but take each line and expand it in a way that is useful to you. If you need to take a specific challenge that you are facing and use that as a way for this Psalm to be something of a treatment, that might also be useful!

Pycl #4: We can always focus on the stories in the lesson!! The one about Enoch is less frequently included than some.

I like the way this section addresses mankind's need to take one step at a time. Rather than, for example, saying to ourselves after an accident, "there is no matter", we can take some interim, and more understandable steps. We can work to overcome our fear of pain, we can work to not "rehearse" the accident over and over, gain dominion over our thought and consciousness, give gratitude for God, Life, etc.

Make the distinction between the "false testimony" of material sense, and the way that such false evidence can seem real.

Have a great week in Sunday School!!
