Pycl #1: Define the big words in this subject title. Talk about the "ancient" meanings. Why do we still study this today? Just so I don't have to rewrite things here, you may want to read the met that I wrote this week on the CedarS' website to find some of the ideas about what these three "evils" might look like today (and what they originally meant). https://www.cedarscamps.org/metaphysical/articles/2019/11/know-god-good-as-the-only-power/

I love the recognition that these terms that sometimes can seem outdated or irrelevant, are actually very much a current concern! Can your students find examples in their lives today where they can see the suggestion that any of these three evils influence their lives, their thoughts, or society? Find what spiritual truths counteract these suggestions (there is no formula, or single truth, but it's good to think about different ideas—for example the theme of God's awesome power in this week's lesson.) Then, see how each story in this lesson fits into this subject, why are they included, what do they teach about this subject.

Young children can think about how they are listening to God (Her power), Love in their everyday lives—or in Sunday School. Are they hearing God when they are laughing and being joyful? When they are jumping up and down? When they are cuddling with their mom or dad?

Pycl #2: In citations B3 and S3 we have examples of how error can seem to hide Truth, though never permanently. Try this little exercise. Hold a piece of paper directly up to the face (have them do this). All they can see is the paper. If this paper represented the evil of sickness, sadness, anger, etc. and we kept it in our field of vision so that this was all we saw and thought about, then we wouldn't be able to ever see the good and true things of God that are going on around us at all! When we hold that paper up, that is all we can see! When we think about, look at, talk about error all the time, then we really have a hard time seeing good, even when it is right there in front of us. It is a lot like putting on a blindfold that only lets in the bad.

Pycl #3: Here's another little idea. At the end of citation B3, Paul tells us what the "fruit of the Spirit" is (citation B2 helps as well). How do we get those fruits? (Again, I refer to this in an agricultural analogy in CedarS Met this week). Well, we have to plant the right seeds!

What does a "seed" of Love look like? It looks like compassion, patience, kindness, generosity, tenderness (have them make a list). What does a seed of Truth look like? And so on. Now bring in some quick growing seeds. Only do this if you feel like taking responsibility for tending these seeds/plants during the week and bringing them in each Sunday to check on. Each week, talk about how we would best care for the plants. Let them water them a bit, make sure they are sitting in a sunny, warmer spot, pull up any weeds (not likely there if you are using purchased potting soil, but the analogy still can be shared). Hopefully, they will be flowers that might mature by Christmas and that they can bring home with them as a gift?!

Pycl #4: If you remember the story of "The House with the Colored Windows", an older Christian Science publication for children, grab it and try sharing it. If not, you can tell it to the children. In substance, it involves two children looking out of different panes of colored glass at a white horse grazing in a pasture. Of course, the horse looks to be different colors depending on which pane of glass you look through, but you cannot really be fooled, because you know that the horse is really white! You can elaborate for the sake of making it deeper and more entertaining.

You can bring in something that changes the color or looks of things when you look through it, so that they can try it out for themselves. Then, think about Mary Baker Eddy's statement about "right reasoning" (S5). The only way we can know for sure what is true is when we use the senses that God gave us, spiritual senses. Just as we know that the horse is not, never was, purple or red, we know, from Truth/Mind/Love, that what God tells us is true, even when it doesn't "look" that way. When we reason from the facts that God is all-good, and therefore only makes that which is good, intelligent, loving—then we can see those things, even when they might seem otherwise for a time!

Pycl #5: I think it is really cool that in the story in citation B8, Jesus answers every temptation from the devil with a verse from the Bible. What does this say about the Bible's ability to help us when we are needing to feel stronger when faced with the desire to do something that we know we shouldn't do?

Also, this is an opportunity to talk about "personified evil" (S16). What does that mean? Evil is never a person. This is another example of how "right reasoning" can help. God did not make an evil person. Evil is only the mask that they are wearing. If you take that mask off, you are left with an empty mask.

How angry, sad, hurt, can you feel from an empty mask? We can learn to recognize that evil presents itself as a "person", so that we will believe it, accept it, and feel bad from it. When we refuse to believe that an all-good God created an evil person, we find a sense of peace, a healing of hurt! Feel free to make or bring masks that represent this idea and have them try wearing them/taking them off to illustrate how evil is never part of someone.
