for March 11-17, 2019

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Think about this statement: “…it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom….”

  • What is included in this giving?
  • What is included in this kingdom?
  • Who is included?
  • Can you imagine your Father’s smiling face as He, God, freely gives to you life, all good, all protection, all needs met, and even more than you can imagine?
  • What would you count as your treasures?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What are examples of God’s giving mentioned in the Responsive Reading?

  • He watereth the hills
  • Causes the grass to grow
  • Herb for the service of man
  • Brings forth food out of the earth
  • Trees are full of sap
  • He planted the cedars of Lebanon
  • He provides instruction, knowledge, counsel, sound wisdom, understanding, strength
  • He causes you who love Him to inherit substance

Think about these statements; how can any of them be applied to questions, observations, or issues you face or see in your community or home?

Ask students to write out a prayer treatment using any of those statements.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Can anything be hidden from God? Will God hide any of His goodness from you? What belongs to God, and by extension to you in Citation B3?

  • Greatness, power, glory, victory, majesty, riches, honour, giving strength to all

Read together Mary Baker Eddy’s statement about substance in Citation S2 or in Science & Health 468:17. What does the word “affluence” mean? Why can you rejoice in God’s affluence?

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What is one of the greatest gifts from God?

In citation B5 we read an answer:

  • One God
  • We shall love God with all our heart and soul and might.

What are the demands on us? Citation S4.

What do your students know of Solomon?

  • One of the great kings of Israel
  • Known for wisdom and strength
  • Humble
  • Son of King David
  • Beautiful to look on
  • If you say wise or wisdom to any one who knows the scriptures, they will probably think of Solomon

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Ask students to consider a world where God by whatever name is first, a priority in our thought? Citation B9.

Read together Citation B13. What is the message for you?

Ask students to memorize Citation S9. Why is this so? See Citations S13 and S14.

Have your students thought of God as Father and Mother? What other terms for God have they thought of?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What is the message to us in the scripture story of Zacchaeus in Citation B15? Perhaps Citation B16 can help.

I heard a story recently about a girl who visited elderly individuals in a nursing home. She asked each of them to name three things they wanted. She was surprised, since she expected them to say money, or a house, or transportation. What she heard was – one wanted peanut butter, another wanted cheese, another a photo of her puppy.

Now read Citation S15. Where do the treasures desired by those elderly individuals fit -- sensual, corrupting, or as part of blessings that come from unspeakable peace and love? See Citation S18.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What are the promises from the “covenant”, or contract, God made with the house of Israel, which includes you as one of the children of Israel found in the bible portion of this section?

  • Put my law in their inward parts
  • Write it in their hearts
  • I will be their God, they shall be my people
  • I will cure them
  • Show them the abundance of my peace
  • Supply all their needs

How do the teachings of Christian Science support this “covenant” God made with man? See Citation S26. Also read the story in Citations S21, S22, and S23.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What is the scriptural desire stated in B23? “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health,...”

We can therefore afford to be kind one to another, to give to each other, to look upon each other with kindness, affection, and healing thoughts. See the encouragement provided in MBE’s poem “Love” that is also a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal: number 30 (words included here):

Brood o'er us with Thy shelt'ring wing,

'Neath which our spirits blend

Like brother birds, that soar and sing,

And on the same branch bend.

The arrow that doth wound the dove

Darts not from those who watch and love.

If thou the bending reed wouldst break

By thought or word unkind,

Pray that his spirit you partake,

Who loved and healed mankind:

Seek holy thoughts and heavenly strain,

That make men one in love remain.

Learn, too, that wisdom's rod is given

For faith to kiss, and know;

That greetings glorious from high heaven,

Whence joys supernal flow,

Come from that Love, divinely near,

Which chastens pride and earth-born fear,

Through God, who gave that word of might

Which swelled creation's lay:

“Let there be light, and there was light.”

What chased the clouds away?

'Twas Love whose finger traced aloud

A bow of promise on the cloud.

Thou to whose power our hope we give,

Free us from human strife.

Fed by Thy love divine we live,

For Love alone is Life;

And life most sweet, as heart to heart

Speaks kindly when we meet and part.

(Poems 6:1–12 (np), Hymns 30-32, 452-456)
