[Click to hear Ken Cooper narrated poem “God the Only Cause and Creator”]

Many of you know I live in Dresden, Germany. And one thing you learn very early in this country is to obey signs. If the walk signal shows green you cross the street. If the walk signal shows red you wait until it changes to green. It does not matter if there are no cars to be seen anywhere near you, green means go, red means stop. You are often reminded, “Children might be watching!”

For the most part other signs are also observed with pretty much the same respect.

For example, speed limit signs. We were just on a weekend trip and were up at our favorite area on the Baltic Sea. It is a National Park that includes woods, estuarian waters, fields and then the wonderful Baltic Sea. The name of our little one street village is Muggenburg. It is five kilometers from the nearest town, Zingst. And one road runs from Zingst to Muggenburg. Very few houses, very sparsely populated. Lots of waterfowl, lots of wild animals, and sheep, cows, and horses. And that one road has a speed limit sign, 60 kilometers per hour, that is about 38 miles per hour. Many of the locals do not observe that speed limit, but I do.

That speed limit is going to serve as a symbol of “the Word,” “Logos,” the divine Word of thought and idea. The Logos that makes the universe work, that holds things in divine order, and that most importantly with this week’s lesson, the Logos that makes all things new, the beginning, the Principle of Life harmonious. Obey the Logos and the universe works!

Logos comes from the Greek. Logos, (Greek: “word,” “reason,” or “plan”) plural logoi, in Greek philosophy and theology, the divine reason implicit in the cosmos, ordering it and giving it form and meaning.

Here is how I related Logos to an experience! I had driven about half a mile (at the speed limit) when suddenly a mama duck stuck her head out of the grass at the left side of the road and proceeded to walk across the road with 8 brand new, maybe one day old, ducklings. (obviously they had the green light!) If I had not heeded the speed limit sign they may have been pressed duck. But as I had honestly obeyed the speed limit logos, I could comfortably stop and let them cross.

Now even though they were only one day old, these little ducklings knew how to follow Mama’s tail feathers. And they did in a perfect single file line. And they were safe to continue their growth towards duck adulthood.

This experience has been with me since Saturday afternoon like a “gentle beam of living Love” as to how the universe works in harmony. I obeyed and I was treated to a glorious experience. The little ducks obeyed and followed Mama and were led to their next great adventure.

And now…you and I embrace the Bible Lesson for this week and we expect new, glorious adventures! Or as this year’s CedarS Metaphysical Theme quotes from Revelation, “For all things are become new!” (21:5)

The new beginning of this week’s Bible Lesson is this beautiful Golden Text,

Psalms 86:10 “…thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.”

The Responsive Reading affirms God’s strength, the glories of His creation, and that God is mindful of His creation. (Just like Mama duck!)
[Click for PS#2—Cobbey Crisler’s insight on “what is man?” (Ps. 8:4)]

Section 1: God, Mind the only creator.

In Warren’s Post Script #3 citations B1 and S1 are explained beautifully by Cobbey Crisler.

B1 | John 1:1–3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

S1 | 480:26–29 The Bible declares: “All things were made by Him [the divine Word]; and without Him was not anything made that was made.” This is the eternal verity of divine Science.

Those verses in their deeper significance give an insight as to what took place as my grandmother, Isma Sekora Lafferty, was beginning her family.

The joyful beginning of her new little family seemed about to be shattered. Her second child, only 18 months old, was gravely ill with a high fever. The local doctor in Perry, Iowa had done all he could and gave little hope for the child. He told my grandmother that it appeared the child might not make it through the night, and if she did he believed she would never be able to walk. At that point my grandmother contacted a fellow Czech immigrant that had been studying a book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Grandmother Lafferty asked for prayers for her child. And the results were that her little girl (my mom) was healed.

That was in 1919. And that was the beginning of the study of Christian Science in our family’s experience. The healing of one little girl by a brand-new student of Christian Science changed our family history. And I probably should add that laid the foundation for the beginning of four generations of Christian Scientists living and practicing this Science of Being. A very sad circumstance was turned into a very happy beginning. Without that healing my mom’s 40+ years of the public healing ministry of Christian Science would never have taken place. And I guess I should add, my own 45 years of public practice.

Citation S5 outlines the operation of effective Mind healing: “The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord, — assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven, — the actual reign of harmony on earth.” (122:1–7)

Now that is a renewal, a beginning worth talking about!

Section 2: God’s creation revealed.

This section is a beautiful statement of God’s care of all creation. We are assured of God’s governing of the rains “To satisfy the desolate and waste ground;” [citation B6 and W’s PS#5]

This reminded me of the experience of joining in prayer with several Christian Scientists as South Africa faced “Day Zero.” This was when the taps in the city would run dry and people start queuing (lining up) for water. This was foreseen for August 2018. That Day Zero never materialized. Rains came. Conservation worked. Now dam levels are rising and the water situation improving. Not only were there refreshing rains but the residents of Cape Town heroically reduced the use of water by 50 %. On a recent visit to South Africa I observed first hand as residents showered only every other day. Baths were a thing of the past. The cute slogan regarding toilet flushing worked wonders, “If it’s yellow let it mellow. It it’s brown flush it down.” From using over one billion liters per day in 2015, the average daily water usage sits at just over 500 million liters. What great lessons Cape Town has taught the world about water conservation. Conservation and prayer continues!

Also, in this section we read,
“Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south? Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?” (B7 | Job 39:19, 26, 2)

One of my first public practice cases was when I was in junior college. I received a call from members of our church in Ocala. Their horse, Dugan, that I exercised for them, had a severe case of Colic. Rather than call a vet they called their Sunday school student exercise boy. I came with all my equipment, the Bible and Science and Health and I got busy. Colic is a problem that is considered the leading cause of premature death with horses. But with applications of the Comforter, lots of divine Love, and use of many spiritual truths learned in Sunday School, Dugan and I ended up with many, many more days of great rides together.

Mary Baker Eddy had a great love for nature and shares in her textbook powerful insights as to how we all can live in more harmony with our cohabitants on earth. She writes,

“Nature voices natural, spiritual law and divine Love, but human belief misinterprets nature. Arctic regions, sunny tropics, giant hills, winged winds, mighty billows, verdant vales, festive flowers, and glorious heavens, — all point to Mind, the spiritual intelligence they reflect. The floral apostles are hieroglyphs of Deity. Suns and planets teach grand lessons. The stars make night beautiful, and the leaflet turns naturally towards the light. In the order of Science, in which the Principle is above what it reflects, all is one grand concord.” (S9 | 240:1–11)

I remember reading an account of one of Mary Baker Eddy’s (MBE) household workers sharing a statement by the famous botanist, Luther Burbank, regarding the intelligence of plants. MBE commented along the lines, “I would love to teach that man Christian Science.” The next day in MBE’s mail was a letter requesting two copies of Science and Health from Luther Burbank!

Here are some thoughts I came across from Luther Burbank,

“Luther Burbank – A Saint Amidst the Roses

CHAPTER 38

“The secret of improved plant breeding, apart from scientific knowledge, is love.” Luther Burbank uttered this wisdom as I walked beside him in his Santa Rosa garden. We halted near a bed of edible cacti.

“While I was conducting experiments to make ‘spineless’ cacti,” he continued, “I often talked to the plants to create a vibration of love. ‘You have nothing to fear,’ I would tell them. ‘You don’t need your defensive thorns. I will protect you.’ Gradually the useful plant of the desert emerged in a thorn-less variety.” https://www.crystalclarity.com/yogananda/chapter-38/

Section 3: The Mind of Christ, revealing true creation.

A nature that reflects the worst or most fearful of mortal thought is by all means not God’s nature. It is possible to discover, to understand, to unfold a nature that reflects all the best of God’s thought. As the Prophet Isaiah wrote,

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (B10 | Isaiah 55:8–11)

Having grown up in Florida where we raise world-record cockroaches, my brother Scott and I laughed many times over his Sunday School teacher’s comment, “Love your cockroaches and they will go away.” But the fact was she did not have a cockroach problem in her house. In later years the both of us thought about her comments. And we discovered there are many means of pest control that do not involve heavy chemical spraying! Yes, lining in harmony with all of God’s creatures is indeed possible

Many of us who have had the opportunity to visit or work at CedarS Camps have loved the opportunity to learn how CedarS Camps’ Founder, Ruth Huff, discovered Christian Science. One summer in high school she visited the family farm of a basketball teammate. Every morning as practicing Christian Scientists they studied the Bible Lesson together. And after Ruth was swarmed by bees and stung from head to toe, she was quickly healed thanks to their prayers. Actually, that summer’s experience became a life-changing new beginning for Ruth. And also, for the thousands of CedarS’ campers and staff that have learned practical lessons of harmonious coexistence with the beautiful nature at CedarS. Thinking of Ruth’s healing led me to this sweet testimony:

I am nine years old, and I love Christian Science very much

By Pamela F. Murphy

From the June 23, 1973 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

“I am nine years old, and I love Christian Science very much. I have been in the Sunday School since I was two.

One summer I was at my grandmother's house in Wisconsin. I was playing by a woodpile when some bees started to chase and sting me. I ran as fast as I could into the house, where my mother was.

She said that bees are God's creatures and could not hurt me. I was crying, but we talked about the fact that God created all and made everything good, so there was no room for evil of any kind. From then on, I was all right, and there was no swelling from the bee stings.

Later a friend of mine told me that when he saw bees his father said to run into the house. I told him God is his Father and Mother and doesn't let him be afraid. Bees make honey, not hurts. The Bible teaches "God is love" (I John 4:8), and I know this is true.”

Pamela F. Murphy Birmingham, Michigan

Healing are often the means of discovering new beginnings, a new, fresh start. As I wrote earlier, our Cedars Metaphysical theme for this year is, "Behold, I make all things new." (Revelation 21:5)

Every single spiritual healing—the awakening to a fuller awareness of our innate harmony and health—comes about with a new insight. The dawning of a new insight about Love brings about healing. Sometimes this new insight is a startling revelation, sometimes it’s a comforting feeling, and sometimes it’s a gentle nudge to let go of junk we don’t need. It takes many forms. But the new insight always awakens and enlivens. Our theme this year celebrates this “aha moment” of newness, and encourages us to leave old habits, fears, and limitations behind.

We approach each summer at CedarS as “the best summer yet!” This statement underscores this idea of newness. We are not suggesting that there was anything wrong with past summers, but we are actively expecting that this summer will be full of newness, freshness, and vitality. Our theme is all about this. It’s all about claiming constant progress for ourselves, the camp, and the whole world.

We all seem to be carrying around labels, memories, fears, or doubts that threaten to weigh us down and keep us from being the truest and healthiest version of ourselves. Focusing on newness this summer will help us all to let go of this baggage, and come out of our time at camp renewed, uplifted, and transformed!

For further study and application:

The word "new" appears in some form a total of 136 times in the Bible, 570 times in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and 57 times in the Christian Science Hymnal. Here are a couple of examples to launch your further study:

"Let us accept Science, relinquish all theories based on sense-testimony, give up imperfect models and illusive ideals; and so let us have one God, one Mind, and that one perfect, producing His own models of excellence. Let the 'male and female' of God's creating appear. Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy. Let us rejoice that we are subject to the divine 'powers that be.” (Science and Health 249:1-9)

"…put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." (Ephesians 4:22-24 put)

Section 4: Who did sin? Wrong question. What does God do!
“And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.” (B14 | John 9:1–3, 5–7, and W’s PS#8 for Cobbey Crisler’s insights)

As Mary Baker Eddy summarizes: “Physical causation was put aside from first to last by this original man, Jesus. He knew that the divine Principle, Love, creates and governs all that is real.” ( S19 | 286:12 12)

Jesus directed thought to God. Jesus always wanted to know what God knows about His creation. Jesus did not look to matter and its discords. If you find any place where Jesus directed thought to causes in matter or body, let me know.

On a flight last February returning from New Zealand I was suddenly in agony. I was itching, wanting to scratch my legs and felt hopeless in the middle of a very long flight from Singapore to Moscow. Oh, how I wanted a shower! I had been fishing and swimming in waters that were reported to be infested with a form of algae that was considered harmful and irritating. We had even been given published material about how to clean fishing tackle, clothes, and shoes after being in that water. And what was so absurd was that the water was gloriously beautiful, clear, and refreshing. Oh, how a false sense of nature can ruin even a wonderful time in paradise.

Facing hours of misery, I realized I had to decide. Did I take Jesus’ approach and know that there had been no sin, no mistake, no consequence in matter. Or, did I suffer in agony over material contamination. I chose God with my whole heart.

Now this sounds incredible. But that simple choice was the end. I suddenly went from the nightmare of incredible agony to simply no pain at all. It was over. It was so quick it seemed like a dream, a nightmare ended with the Truth of being. I was one happy flyer at that point.

This works with all contact with God’s glorious nature. There is no consequence for contact with mosquitoes, ants, ticks, stinging nettle, spiders, snakes, or even with water. All God’s creation is harmless, useful, beautiful, and spiritual.

I remember a quick healing of what was diagnosed as flesh-eating bacteria. Prayer had been quickly applied to this case and when I was reminded of a news article about this claim, I handled that specific detail. The little fellow who seemed to manifest the symptoms was comforted. Upon his return home his father asked to take him to the hospital to have things checked out. Examinations revealed that was actually the belief that had been manifested. But…when the examination took place the doctor confirmed that all was well. Healing was well on its way. We do not need to fear an examination that confirms healing, right!!!!

Section 5: Made new, fresh start, born again, sounds good!

We might find ourselves in the middle of training for a new season at camp, a new summer job, or anything brand new and we can realize that simple obedience, a willingness to know that God made all and maintains all in perfect harmony will keep us on the right path. Our new adventure will be assured of success if we like little ducklings just keep our eyes on the tail feathers in front of us, stay in place in line, and listen to Mama’s peeps. (Father-Mother God)”

When Nicodemus spoke with Jesus he got the message, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Born again? Made new? Fresh start?

One of my prayer warriors from the South Africa drought situation is a daily student of the Christian Science Bible Lesson. She loves studying the Truth of being and bringing it out in her life. And she is quite experienced at it since she has been doing so in 8 decades or so.

She was reminded of one of her favorite healings by the following verse in the Lesson:

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.” (B17 | James 1:17, 18, W’s PS#11)

“Whenever that verse in James 1:17 comes into the lesson I think of the first testimony I gave in 11th church London when my dog, Roddy, was healed of distemper. It was recorded in an article I wrote for the Sentinel. “Every good gift and every perfect gift.” This dog was a present from my parents for my 17th birthday. One day I noticed his nose was dry and he was listless and not his usual happy self. I carried him up to my bedroom and I laid him on my bed. I got out my Bible and Science and Health and started reading the Bible Lesson to him. I read that verse from James. Well, I reasoned, Roddy is a perfect gift, the perfect idea given to me by my Father-Mother God, there can be no unreality or variableness in him, nothing which he can be experiencing which he did not get from God. By the time I finished the Lesson he jumped off my bed and looked at me as if to say “when are we going for a walk. All sign of sickness had vanished and was never seen again. And this was later confirmed by a vet who said he had been healed of distemper!”

Section 6: Living in God’s creation, every day.

I love the absolute, unbounded, unlimited, borderless possibilities that come with sincere, follow your Mama duck’s tail feathers obedience. Simple obedience, that is even from day one possible to change and make new every aspect of human or ducky existence. With God nothing is impossible.

The prophet Isaiah tells us who we are and what we are!

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise. (B19 | Isaiah 43:10, 21)

The wonderful, unselfed love and courage of practicing Christian Scientists is making new the world through one healing at a time. Here is one or my favorite examples of being born again through the Christ. “For all things shall be made new.”

In an affidavit from Doris E. Wiederkehr of Mar Vista, California it is related that she and her husband were asked to adopt an unwanted child. Prenatal tests indicated that the child would be born handicapped. The birth took place in 1947. The child was born with multiple handicaps including unformed vocal cords, a damaged heart, and a serious bone condition. They were also told that the child had cerebral palsy and that there was very little that could be done medically. Mrs. Wiederkehr writes, “As a Christian Scientist, I could not accept this verdict. I had been healed earlier of a curvature of the spine and head learned to trust and turn to God.”

The handicaps were healed over several years. Each condition healed through prayer, love, and hard work. Their son Les left behind these mortal labels and has led a healthy, happy life married and fully employed. His father became an active Christian Science church member and his mom a Christian Science Practitioner.

The full account is found in the book, Spiritual Healing in a Scientific Age,” by Robert Pell. Pages 54-63. If there is any one of our Met readers that does not have access to this book please let me know and I will send you the full account. Rick

The New Testament of the Bible begins with four books that most of you know quite well. The fourth of those books is known as the Gospel of John.

This Gospel begins with these familiar words, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

As we seek to start afresh, to allow things to be made new we simply seek to affirm that verse! “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

And I have always cherished the following experience that occurred in the lives of a family I got to know in Milford, Michigan.

Aileen and Paul Cord had made plans for the adoption of a baby. They had qualified and were allowed to adopt their son, Matthew. And then the adoption agency called and asked them to consider adopting another infant, Craig. Craig had already been placed but that had not worked out. There were claims of handicap. Aileen told the agency rep that she would have to “pray about it.” The representative told her, “That is exactly why I am calling you so that you will pray in Christian Science.” After the night’s prayer Aileen and Paul knew they had to accept a second child. And they did.

“Aileen: I didn't know if I was ready for this. I didn't know if I could do this. I hadn't had any experience at all with handicapped children. … I certainly had a curiosity as to what the child would look like. However, [I] did not feel that the child's physical appearance should in any way affect our decision. My recollection of that night is [of] not much sleep and a whole lot of praying. I've always been able to trust God. But this somehow was being able to trust my ability to trust God. This was certainly recollection of Jesus' night in Gethsemane, before the crucifixion when he prayed, Father, if it be Thy will, let this cup pass from my lips, but nevertheless not my will but Thine be done.1 Well, somewhere during the night I realized that I had another option. That I didn't have to look at this as taking a handicapped child into my home. That I could look at this as an opportunity to see God's creation. Mary Baker Eddy says in the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health: "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry."2 … I could expect good for this child in our home. [In reality,] he was the offspring, the creation, [of God] the outcome of God's love. And I certainly couldn't be hesitant about taking more love into our home. If God is Love, and He is giving us the ability to be loving, then He's going to show us how to use that love. So, by morning I felt that it was right for us to take this child, who seemed to need what we had to offer: prayer in Christian Science, which offered him hope. Here was another opportunity to express God's love in our life. And everybody would be blessed. It wouldn't be a burden.”

“We were praying every day to see him as normal and a welcome addition to our family and a normal part of it. We called a practitioner, a Christian Science practitioner, and asked her to support us in our prayer for this baby. Things just proceeded normally. The fears expressed never came about. They were expecting the eyesight to deteriorate. That never happened. He developed and grew. He sat up. He walked. All symptoms of anything connected with this early childhood prognosis completely disappeared. His head was unusually large for his body at that time. But today, he's now nineteen and … he's physically healthy and played football in high school. He lives in his own apartment. He holds a full-time job. And he's living an independent life today.”

“What it takes to care” From the September 19, 1988 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel https://sentinel.christianscience.com/issues/1988/9/90-38/what-it-takes-to-care

I cannot wait to continue my ongoing search in this Bible Lesson for the current recognition that allows all things to be made new.

And those little ducks continue to help me. It does not take some super hero effort to rise above matter’s claims and limitations. Because in Truth matter can never limit you. God will make you anew. It is possible to let all things be made new as we simply follow our Mother-Father God, eyes on the prize, stay in line, walk when it is green, and let God manifest Herself through our lives.
