CAP1 – Give thanks for and loving attention to (remember) all benefits! (Golden Text, B20, Ps. 103: 2+): Cobbey Crisler writes: “We're all covered by insurance policies, perhaps life and health insurance. The Canadian spelling is probably better, "assurance" as far as biblical therapy is concerned. If you've ever wanted to know what benefits we have, Psalm 103 lists them: Verse 2, "Forget not all his benefits." We have "Forgive us iniquities," that's sin removed from man. "Disease," all of them, Verse 3. Removed from man's experience and nature.” Verse 4, “Redeemeth thy life from destruction,” death no longer the arbiter of man’s potential and capability. Those are the benefits. They’re not only individual; they’re collective because verse 6 says, “The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.”
“Leaves of the Tree: Prescriptions from the Psalms”, by B. Cobbey Crisler**
- Lindsey Biggs, CS, adds: “You might enjoy singing along with this Christian praise and worship song! It goes along with Psalms 103 from the Golden Text and Section 5. 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord, O my soul) by Matt Redman https://youtu.be/DXDGE_lRI0E
CAP2— Affirm that God won’t withhold any good! (Responsive Reading, Ps. 84:11) –Lindsey Biggs, CS, writes:
“…no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” God won’t withhold anything good! Why would God withhold anything? Jesus reminds us of God’s nature here: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:11)
So, don’t think that God has a will for you that is anything but good! God’s will for you is peace, health, happiness, and eternal life!
CAP3—Make Soul’s “infinite resources” your own by caring! (Using citation S2, 60:29-13 & B18, Phil. 4:19)— Ken Cooper wrote a custom poem for this week’s lesson “SOUL : True Nourishment”.
Ken comments: “When we recognize and know the infinity of God, we see that his attributes must also be infinite. The infinity of Soul is our guarantee of abundance, for everything we need at every moment is there as the full untainted expression of our Father-Mother always with us. Good reason to praise! The poem this week is based on the care we have for one another, fortified by knowing from where it originates. What God does do!

CAP4 –When in a wilderness, restore your faith, spiritual energy and awe of water springing up from your Rock! (Based on citation B9, Exodus 17:1-6). Lindsey Biggs, CS, writes: “Like the children of Israel in the wilderness witnessing the ‘springing up’ of water out of the rock to meet their needs during their exodus, we too may echo the words of Violet Hay in this well-loved hymn: “From sense to Soul my pathway lies before me, / From mist and shadow into Truth's clear day; / The dawn of all things real is breaking o'er me, / My heart is singing: I have found the way. (Hymn. 64:1)
The spiritual significance of water is illustrated in the “living water” which Christ Jesus talked about with the woman of Samaria. “Whosever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:5-29) This is the real water we want to drink from every day! We do this through the Christ – through seeing and knowing God’s spiritual nature. We can be a witness to this Christ – reading and studying it, living it, proving it, and sharing it with others! This will surely make the Christ a well of water within us springing up to bless, give and cherish with others!
In the article “A Communion Moment” in the September 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal, the author describes it this way: “The phrase ‘springing up’ instantly caught my attention and quickly touched my heart. It immediately began to fill me with new feelings of joy and spiritual renewal…We can each take a drink of ‘living water’ — the presence of Christ – which restores our faith and spiritual energy.” (Margaret Campbell)
CAP5—"Pause, —wait on God”—in skiing and in life! (Based on citation S13, SH 323:9) Here’s a favorite CedarS Met for water-skiing. "Beholding the infinite tasks of Truth, we pause, —wait on God. Then we push onward, until boundless thought walks enraptured and conception unconfined is winged to reach the divine glory."
After saying "Hit it!" for the boat to start pulling you, it's all too easy for most beginners to lean forward right away, as if to get up "on their own." This causes quick nose-dives. However, when we PAUSE, waiting to acknowledge the boat, or really God, as the true power of the event, able to pull us through it, God precedes and PRE-SERVES us – and we express such dominion that we almost feel able to walk on the water. (A successful pausing posture for skiers to mimic is that of a testifier getting halfway up out of his seat and pausing for a few seconds before proceeding, because another testifier got up at the same time.)
In like manner, when we realize that life is about God, about Love, and not about us (as physical beings) or because of us (as sexual beings) we are free to merely reflect, instead of originate, the "incontrovertible" perfection of man AS A SPIRITUAL BEING, as the "image, reflection, of God, . . neither inverted" ('reversed in position, order, or relationship') "nor subverted," ('overturned from the foundation: RUINED: perverted or corrupted by an undermining of morals, allegiance, or faith') "but upright and Godlike." (S&H 200:19, with Merriam Webster's definitions in parenthesis)

CAP6—Like Job, find your identity in your oneness with one Mind. (B12, Job 23:13):
Cobbey Crisler writes: “In Job 23:13 we find two revelations from God to Job about God’s nature. Because there’s only one way that you and I can ever find out anything out about God who is the only one who knows who God is, God [Himself/Herself]. God must do the revealing and here Job has two concepts revealed to him about God. And you know we don’t get anything unless we’re ready for it. Job is ready. He needs this, doesn’t he?… Why does Job need to know God as “one [mind], and as soul”?
What’s been his problem? One problem is identity. He said (in Job 9:21, 22) even “[if I said] I am perfect… Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul:” Here if soul is identified with God, where does one find one’s identity? The, whatever he was thinking about as his soul, if he had it, would have to image forth the One Soul. How many souls are there? If you relate the word “soul” to God, there is no other possible alternative than for a monotheist to see one, with whatever is revealed to us about God. That may be tough logic, but if soul is related to God, as a synonym, then there can only be One. So, to seek his identity in that oneness-of-God will tell him more about himself.
What about one mind? Why did he need to know that? [Voice: Because it was God?”] That’s right. And he’d been having a dialogue with many minds, hadn’t he? Nothing but just One Mind as opposed to many, polytheistic gods, or many minds, many opinions… Just think of that beautiful revelation that comes as a solution to all that.”

CAP7— Like Jesus, after being tempted by lesser powers, return “in the power of the Spirit” (B13, Luke 4:14) Cobbey Crisler writes: “Luke indicates that he understands this [Jesus’ period of temptations in the wilderness] has been a power test for Jesus because in Verse 14 he uses that word, "Jesus returned" not in any form of power that Satan had tried to impose upon him [“to take personal power, political power, and priestly power”]. But rather, "in the power of the Spirit into Galilee"—[“in the law that relates man directly to God, the source of the only power there is.]
“Luke the Researcher,” by B. Cobbey Crisler**
CAP8— Confidently take the only perfect medicine of Mind (B17, Psalms 19:7+):
Cobbey Crisler writes: “Read Psalms chapter 19:7-9 and you will discover there are quality controls as far as God’s medicine is concerned: all the things you would want to see on the label. Look at the words “perfect,” “sure,” right,” “pure,” “clean,” and “true,” which has the meaning in Hebrew of stable. You want a stable product. You want a clean product. You want it pure. You want it right. You don’t want the wrong remedy. You want it sure. You want it perfect.”
“Leaves of the Tree: A Prescription from Psalm,” by B. Cobbey Crisler**
CAP9—Expect divine supply in unexpected places! (B19, Matt. 17, 24-27 and S20, 20:1 “Render to Caesar’)
Cobbey Crisler writes: “Matthew 17, Verse 24 on. The famous incident of the tribute money occurs.
(Verse 27). Peter is told to "cast a hook into the sea, take up a fish." There is a fish today called St. Peter's fish. It is one of the few species where the male fish actually carries the young in its mouth. One commentator makes an interesting remark because this was Peter's profession. Most of his disciples had been fishermen. When Jesus left, where did they go? They went back fishing. What did they catch? Zero. This commentator makes the remark, "Nowhere do the gospels record that the disciples ever caught a fish without the help of Jesus.”

CAP10—Act like prophecies are fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand! (B22, Mark 1:15)
Cobbey Crisler writes: "Mark 1, Verse15: There are four foundational aspects to the gospel we need to study… Those four foundational points, under “the time is (or prophesies are) fulfilled," you will see over and over again, explicit or implicit in the text.
The second one is the kingdom of God is at no distance. It is right here. Even that idea is radical to Christendom today often because the kingdom of God, or often heaven, is considered to be so far away from us now. It is out of reach, and we’re not really behaving ourselves sufficiently to get there… But we find the founder of Christianity saying, "Not so."' His theology is based on the fact that the kingdom of God is at hand. Do we act like it is? We moan and we groan most of the time. We wouldn’t if our state of mind was “the kingdom-of-God-is-at-hand" and the “prophecies-are-fulfilled." But those are only two of the cornerstones.
The third one is Repent. That means to change your concept… The problem is mental or he never would have stated it in this way…
…nothing is incurable from the point of view of Jesus’ theology. If you can change your concept, then everything is curable. That's some good news of victory…
The fourth and final cornerstone is to ''believe the gospel.” That "believe"" is not just to hold an. opinion that waves in the breeze. This is a conviction and a trust in the pronouncements of the gospel of the kingdom of God, and that kingdom of God is at hand.”

CAP11—Like Jesus, heal the deaf & dumb in others and yourself. (B23, Mark 7:32-35)
Cobbey Crisler writes: “Mark 7 , Verse 32. Here we have peculiar to Mark, a healing of one who is deaf and has speech impairment. This may be considered, according to commentators, as too crude by the other gospel writers to include, but it contains a great lesson. Again, we have three treatments.
Verse 33 has treatment Number One. We shouldn't be surprised to see, "He took him aside from the multitude.” Why? In an apocryphal book called Recognitions of Clement, Peter is quoted as saying, “Nothing is more difficult, my brethren, than to reason concerning the truth in the presence of a mixed multitude of people." There's a privacy of prayer. ''Pray to thy Father in secret,’’ Jesus said about prayer in Matthew 6:6.
So, the Second Treatment, “He put his fingers into his ears, spit, and touched his tongue.” We may say, “Jesus, why did you have to do it that way,” right? It seems to argue against the way he had already established.
What does he do with the one he is dealing with? He is meeting a mental state that is dualistic and confused. It needs the tender lesson and mercies of the Christ, to summon it to that purity that can see God and, therefore, be like God. Thus, it can have every vestige of the mixed nature of impurity removed. You have a deaf man. You can’t communicate to a deaf man, not audibly. So, what does he do? He knows what the problem of that individual happens to be. He’s not going to alarm that man any more than he did the twelve-year-old girl who woke up from that so-called terminal sleep. He simply goes to that individual and tenderly points to the areas that he knows constitute the problem, and that he is going to deal with. Nothing defensive by the man. No alarm expressed. He simply “put his fingers in his ears, spit, touched his tongue.”
Verse 34. Then the Third treatment, “Ephphatha,” Aramaic for “Be opened.”
Verse 35, “And immediately.” We don’t have Jesus assigning him months with a speech therapist in order to learn how to phrase the language which he hasn’t spoken or heard from others, “He spake plain. No surgical operation.

CAP12—Like “the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a skyward flight” (S29), you will quickly rise to Soul-sense. When Mary Baker Eddy wrote this in Science and Health on page 261:27 (S29), researchers had not yet discovered and documented how "super-precocial" chicks of the "megapodes" came out of their eggs "completely independent…which hatch fully feathered, their eyes open and capable of flight."

CAP13—Trust totally on God today for huge blessings! (S32, p. vii:1)
Lindsey Biggs, CS, writes: “At camp we often say this quote for grace: “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.” (S32) I love this because of these 3 components:
- God is the sustaining infinite that is blessing us. God is always active to guide, guard, heal, and bless us.
- We are leaning on God; trusting God; allowing God to come into our thinking and yielding to the presence of God.
- Today! Not somewhere out there. Our spiritual sense ushers in the presence and reality of the Kingdom of Heaven right here and now (not off in some distant future). This goes along with Jesus’s assurance that the Kingdom of Heaven is within us (Luke 17:21). What a revolutionary idea that Mary Baker Eddy expands for us!
So, today, let’s say with Mary Baker Eddy:
“To-day my soul can only sing and soar. An increasing sense of God's love, omnipresence, and omnipotence enfolds me. Each day I know Him nearer, love Him more, and humbly pray to serve Him better.” (My. 174:25–28)
