Possible Younger Class Lesson Ideas for Sunday School from
the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson on:

“God”

Pycl #1: Go beneath the surface of synonyms for God for how we see, hear and feel God.
What does God mean to your students. If they are writers, have them write a long list of how they think of God. Look at the Responsive Reading for Paul's description in Athens (Acts17:22-28). If they are younger, then ask them to name what they think of. It can be synonyms, these should come up, but go beneath the surface of those synonyms as well.

Then ask them about how they "see" God, "feel" God, "hear" God. Can you share examples to get it started? Can they "draw" God? Why not? If we reflect God, then can we draw our real true selves? Just something to think about together!! What do you think we look like, what does love look like, truth, and so on? Can we draw something that is infinite? Can we draw an "aspect" of something infinite?

On p. 477:26 of Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy refers to a lake that the native Americans referred to as "the smile of the Great Spirit". This is the kind of thing we are talking about. Beauty is not separate from God's identity. Man is not separate from God's being. You may enjoy looking that paragraph over and thinking it through with the students because it makes it clear that our being is inseparable from God, and God's from ours! We are "coexistent".

Pycl #2: [W. At online or onsite camp find God as incomparable to fix any disappointment.]*
What can you "compare" with God (Golden Text, Isaiah 40:18)? Bring in like items—two apples, etc.—and ask this question from the Golden Text. Is there anything else that is infinite, all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, all-good? Do we sometimes invent things that seem like a "god" to us?

Perhaps we are so disappointed that we aren't going to be able to attend camp in person this year that we feel utterly and completely despondent.* Is this keeping us from really recognizing the presence and total government of infinite Good in our lives? There are literally INFINITE good events, activities, love, usefulness, joy...available to us this summer, every day. But if we don't realize or recognize that God is at the center of life itself and we are one with that infinite good, we will miss it! We will always be waiting for it! *[W. Wait no longer! Right here, right now, is God; nothing can "compare" to God, and camp, being straight from God, is right there with each of us right now! This is just one example, and we can bring this thought to help handle the tiny disappointments that come up any day—the rest of your life.

Pycl #3: Share cool stories where we learn about God being in stillness. Stop the chatter!
What is one way that we can "know God"? See citation B4 (Ps. 46:10). What does it mean to "Be still"? What does it mean to "Be still and know?" To "Be still and know that I AM ... God".

What are some cool stories where we learn about God being in stillness? How about Elijah in the cave? Did he learn something new about God's identity there? What about when Moses learned about God being the great "I AM"? What do we learn about ourselves and how we are coexistent with God from these stories?

Try, if the students are not too young, "being still", that is, setting a timer, closing eyes and just listening, not telling God about what you want, but just listening. Remind them that this takes a lot of practice and they should just enjoy the silence if they even can get any "silence". Talk about the mental interruptions of "thought" when they sit in silence. What is this "thought" ("what am I going to do this afternoon after Sunday School?" "I wonder what is for lunch?" etc.) isn't it just the chatter of mortal mind that thinks it is separate, a separate "self" or identity from God?

Pycl #4: Find & journal broader ways you demonstrate every day what you know about God!
What does the story of the three Hebrew boys in the furnace tell us about God? Make a list of what it teaches us. Does God do this for us today? How did they think of God? Can we think this way with that kind of certainty? If the answer is "no"— then what does it take for us to feel that kind of confidence?

Citations S20 and S27 give us some ideas for what is needed! We need demonstration. Without demonstration almost everything we do is "dead". If you are learning an instrument and you never play it, you will not actually learn it, no matter how much you read about it or listen to it, same with absolutely any endeavor. Even something like school, if you read a book and don't discuss it, or write about it, you won't absorb all there is to understand about it because you won't be forced to formulate some articulate thoughts about the book!

How do we "demonstrate" what we know about God and Christian Science? Can you find ten ways that you could do this every day? Can you each have a goal of one good healing a day? What would that healing look like? Maybe it is a moment where you went from very upset, to absolutely peaceful and you recognized and rejoiced in the spiritual origin of that change. We have to recognize God's role in any healing in order to have us really notice that such a healing took place.

See if we can start to embrace a broader sense of what demonstration means!! For me it is about changing thought. Can they name a way that thought can change? Keep a week-long journal and see if they can each share the one healing/demonstration that they had each day at next week's class. Make sure they can answer/include how God was part of that change. I think this is super crucial for every age of student to be able to articulate and do. When we hold off demonstration for only when we get sick or hurt, we are not building our skills except under those conditions! How will we feel that God is a daily part of our lives if that is how we think of demonstration?

Pycl #5: Discuss how real power does not lie in numbers, popularity, majority, and so on.
What is the story about numbering the people of Israel about? Why was that against God's will? How might we do this numbering today? Do you think that it is popular to look to God for our every need today? Think about how the Hebrew boys faced down the popular demand to worship the idol. Think about how it was set up on the "plain" in a visible, obvious place.

Aren't there many material things today that are very obvious, accepted, visible, that we do not automatically accept, as Christian Scientists. This may be above the level of our littlest students, but those who know that they are one of a few, or the "only ones" in their area, will know what we are talking about. (This is broader than those who call themselves "Christian Scientists" or not, it can apply to situations that are asking us to make ethical choices, or to support a path that seems unpopular or challenging, but right.)

Those that live in areas where there are more students of Christian Science, can think in terms of later life when they are out in the world where we are a tiny minority. What does counting have to do with infinity and eternity? See citation S5. Even if we were the most populous of all the religions, wouldn't this still be a limited view based on human sense? Real power does not lie in numbers, popularity, majority, and so on.
